How to Set Up a Church Sermon Loop on YouTube Using OBS Media Source

Use OBS Media Source’s Loop setting for a single sermon, or VLC Video for a repeating playlist, then send the OBS scene to YouTube Live and test it before the service.

For a single prerecorded sermon, add OBS’s Media Source to a scene, select the video, and turn on Loop. OBS repeats the file locally; OBS then encodes the scene and sends it to YouTube Live using your stream URL and stream key. You need an existing computer with OBS, the sermon video, and a reliable internet connection.

What you need before you begin

  • A computer running OBS and the local sermon video file.
  • A YouTube channel eligible to livestream. YouTube’s current onboarding guidance lists a minimum age of 16 and no live-stream restrictions in the past 90 days as eligibility conditions; check YouTube’s live-streaming requirements for current details.
  • An upload connection that can sustain your chosen stream bitrate, plus spare bandwidth for normal fluctuations.

Check that the church has the necessary rights or licenses for everything in the video, including sermon content, music, slides, and other material. Whether a particular rebroadcast is permitted depends on ownership, licenses, and jurisdiction.

Set up a single sermon video in OBS

  1. Choose the scene. In OBS, select the scene that should carry the sermon. Create a new scene if you want to keep the loop separate from other layouts.
  2. Add the video source. In the Sources panel, select +, choose Media Source, give it a recognizable name, and confirm. In the source properties, browse to the local video file. OBS lists common supported formats including MP4, MOV, MKV, AVI, and WebM. See the OBS Media Sources guide.
  3. Enable repetition. Check Loop in the Media Source properties. It is off by default; when enabled, the file replays after playback completes. Confirm the source is visible in the scene and size or position it as needed.
  4. Check audio. Play the source and watch the OBS audio mixer. Listen for clear sermon audio, appropriate levels, and any unwanted silence or clipping. If the video has no audio, verify that the intended audio source is included in the scene.

Use a playlist when the service needs several clips

For a repeating sequence—such as an opening, sermon, and closing clip—use OBS’s VLC Video source rather than adding each video as a separate Media Source. Install VLC first; OBS requires 64-bit VLC when using 64-bit OBS.

  1. In Sources, select + and choose VLC Video.
  2. Add the local video files to the source playlist in the intended order.
  3. Enable Loop Playlist, then preview the sequence and check audio transitions before streaming.

The single-file Media Source loop repeats one video; VLC Video with Loop Playlist repeats a sequence. Choose based on what the church wants viewers to see.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Connect OBS to YouTube Live

  1. Open YouTube Studio and select Go Live. Create or select an encoder stream in Live Control Room.
  2. Copy the stream URL and stream key from YouTube into OBS’s streaming connection settings. Treat the key like a password: anyone with it may be able to send a feed to the channel. If it is exposed, reset it in YouTube Live Control Room. See YouTube’s live stream settings guide.
  3. Set the stream’s visibility to Private or Unlisted for a rehearsal, or Public when it is ready for viewers. Confirm the choice in YouTube rather than assuming a default: visibility defaults can vary by the user’s age.
  4. Start streaming from OBS. Check YouTube Live Control Room for the incoming preview and stream health before sharing the event.

Choose settings your connection can sustain

For RTMP/RTMPS encoder streaming, YouTube’s current guidance lists H.264, H.265, and AV1 video, CBR bitrate encoding, frame rates up to 60 fps, and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. Follow the current YouTube encoder settings, bitrate, and resolution guidance when configuring OBS; available settings and recommendations can change.

As a specific example—not a universal setting—YouTube recommends 5 Mbps for H.264 at 1080p and 30 fps. Choose resolution, frame rate, and bitrate together, based on the video and a stable upload connection. A higher resolution is not an improvement if the connection cannot reliably carry it. YouTube recommends upload bandwidth headroom of 20%; its live streaming tips explain connection preparation.

Test the whole loop before the service

  1. Start a private or unlisted test stream and confirm YouTube receives the OBS feed.
  2. Watch the Live Control Room preview and check its stream health messages.
  3. Let the sermon file reach its end; confirm the beginning starts again without needing manual input. For a playlist, confirm the sequence wraps as intended.
  4. Listen to the stream audio from YouTube, not only through the local OBS preview.
  5. Monitor the stream during the service so you can respond to a dropped connection, audio problem, or health warning.

YouTube’s guidance is direct: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” See YouTube’s streaming tips.

Troubleshoot common problems

  • The video stops instead of repeating: Reopen Media Source properties and confirm Loop is checked. For a multi-clip sequence, enable Loop Playlist on the VLC Video source instead.
  • VLC Video is missing or does not work: Install VLC and check that its architecture matches OBS; 64-bit OBS needs 64-bit VLC.
  • YouTube receives no signal: Check that the stream URL and stream key in OBS match the selected encoder stream in YouTube Live Control Room, then check for a typo or an old key.
  • The stream health warning reports connection problems: Lower bitrate, resolution, or frame rate until the upload connection can sustain the feed, and preserve YouTube’s recommended 20% upload headroom.
  • Viewers cannot see the event: Confirm visibility is set to Public when appropriate. A private or unlisted test is not publicly viewable in the same way as a public stream.
  • The video appears but sermon audio does not: Check the source’s audio in OBS and the mixer meters, then listen to the YouTube preview. Verify that the intended audio is part of the scene’s output.
