Relink it if the file was moved or renamed, restore it if it was deleted, then confirm the source is visible and unobstructed in the intended scene. 1. Find the affected Media Source
- In OBS, select the scene where the clip should appear, such as your pre-stream, break, or after-stream scene.
- In the Sources list, locate the expected Media Source. OBS Media Sources add media files to scenes, including common video formats such as MP4, MOV, MKV, AVI, and WebM, and audio formats such as MP3, AAC, OGG, and WAV. See the OBS Media Sources guide.
- Confirm the source is enabled using its eye/visibility control. If it is disabled, enable it before checking playback.
2. Repair the file path
Open the Media Source’s properties and inspect its Local File selection. Compare the selected path and filename with the file’s current location and name. The precise recovery depends on what happened to the asset:
The file was moved or renamed
Use the Local File control to select the file at its current location, making sure you choose the intended showroom asset. A moved or renamed file may leave the source pointing at its old selection; changing unrelated stream settings will not repair that local-file reference.
The file was deleted
Restore the intended file from the location where you keep your project assets or from an available backup, then select that restored file in the source properties. Do not substitute a different clip unless that is what you want viewers to see.

The OBS setup was copied or moved
Portable mode can carry OBS configuration, but it does not automatically carry scene-collection media files. If you moved the setup to a different directory or computer, update the scene collection’s media paths to the files’ new locations. Alternatively, use a generic path that exists on every device where you use the collection. OBS documents this limitation in its portable mode guide.
3. Check visibility and playback
Make sure another source is not covering the clip
A valid Media Source may still be invisible if its eye is off or another source covers it. In the Sources list, check the source’s visibility state and its position in the stack. Sources higher in the list appear above lower sources, so a full-screen image or video above the clip can obscure it. See OBS’s Sources guide.

Match playback options to the scene
In the Media Source properties, check options such as looping and restarting playback when the source becomes active. Use looping if the showroom asset should repeat, and check restart behavior if it should begin again whenever its scene is shown. Confirm the choice matches how you want the pre-stream, break, or after-stream segment to behave. The Media Sources guide describes these source options.
4. Preflight the live composition
- Select each scene that uses the media and verify that its intended file appears and plays as expected.
- If you use Studio Mode, make the repair in the edit/preview area and transition it to the live scene when the preview is correct. Studio Mode lets you stage scene changes before they reach the live output.
- Test the scene and settings before starting the broadcast. OBS recommends testing in advance; its Quick Start Guide covers setup and scene testing.
What a missing-file error means
A file-not-found message points first to the configured local file being unavailable at the selected location. By itself, it does not establish that the media codec is unsupported or that the YouTube stream connection is broken. Check the file selection and scene before changing encoder or connection settings.

OBS also has a VLC Video source for playlists and extended media support, but it requires VLC to be installed. That is an alternative workflow, not a necessary repair when a single Media Source simply points to a missing file. See the Media Sources guide.
Common causes and fixes
