Set up the replacement host, transfer and verify its files and configuration, then test that YouTube is receiving the intended stream before retiring the old server. Keep a rollback route until the new setup is confirmed healthy.
The steps below use FFmpeg and systemd where relevant, but the same checks apply to OBS and other encoder setups. The exact cutover depends on your current broadcast configuration; do not assume the existing event can accept parallel testing or that changing servers requires a new stream key.
What to record before moving the stream
A VPS migration moves more than video files. The encoder may rely on absolute paths, a particular service account, environment variables, mounted storage, or scheduled jobs. Record the current setup before changing or stopping it.
- Encoder name and version, or the OBS profile and relevant scene/input setup.
- Inputs: local video and audio, playlists, camera or relay URLs, and mounted storage.
- Output URL and protocol. Record where the key is stored, but do not copy the secret into public notes or tickets.
- Service account, working directory, environment files, service unit, restart policy, and whether the service starts at boot.
- Logs, monitoring, watchdogs, cron timers, scheduled restarts, and alerts.
- Host and provider firewall rules, DNS names, and network allowlists.
- Current resolution, frame rate, codecs, bitrate, audio settings, and custom encoder flags.

How do I move my YouTube live stream from one server to another without losing it?
You can reduce migration risk by preparing and validating the replacement before you decommission the source. But a zero-interruption cutover cannot be promised from the server details alone: whether both hosts can be tested against the same broadcast, or whether the cutover needs a new YouTube event or key, depends on the current setup. Check the active broadcast in Live Control Room before attempting parallel streaming.
1. Prepare the new VPS
- Choose an operating system family and install the encoder dependencies, ideally matching the old host where practical.
- Create the service account and destination directories. Check available disk space for media and logs.
- Confirm that the new VPS can make outbound connections to the selected YouTube ingest endpoint. Review both the operating-system firewall and any provider-level firewall.
- Size the VPS for the actual workload. Requirements depend on whether it encodes or relays, the chosen resolution and frame rate, and the encoder settings; generic example CPU, memory, or bitrate figures are not guaranteed requirements.
For hosting, assess destination region, sustained network capacity, storage and backup options, operating-system access, support, and total cost for continuous outbound traffic. No particular provider or plan is established as right for every stream.

2. Transfer media and configuration
- Copy the media, playlists, scripts, and service configuration using a secure transfer method.
- Review every absolute path and playlist entry on the new host. Confirm ownership and permissions for the account that will run the encoder.
- Recreate required environment variables and mounted-storage references. Keep the old VPS intact while you validate the replacement.
- Protect the stream key while transferring configuration. If it has been exposed, replace it using YouTube’s stream settings, then update the protected configuration on the new host.

3. Verify the YouTube destination and key
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and confirm which stream or broadcast the encoder should feed.
- Copy the stream URL and key from the active stream settings rather than relying on a potentially stale value saved on the old VPS.
- If you use RTMPS, copy the RTMPS URL shown in Live Control Room; do not assume the ordinary RTMP URL is interchangeable. YouTube describes RTMPS as “a secure extension to the popular RTMP streaming video protocol.” See YouTube Help: Stream using RTMPS.
- Keep the key private: do not put it in a public repository, screenshot, or log.
Changing VPS does not by itself establish that you need a new key. Check the active stream settings and intended event in Live Control Room before changing credentials or starting the replacement encoder.

4. Recreate process supervision
If the old host uses systemd, adapt the unit to the replacement paths, service account, environment, and encoder command. After saving the unit, reload systemd, enable the service at boot if appropriate, start it, and inspect both its status and logs. An example uses Restart=always, separate service names, and journal logs; these are examples to evaluate for your installation, not universal requirements.
For OBS, preserve and verify the profile, scenes, inputs, and stream settings on the new machine. An FFmpeg service unit does not automatically recreate an OBS setup. OBS’s connection troubleshooting guidance can help identify a host or network issue: OBS stream connection troubleshooting.

5. Validate the replacement, then cut over
- Start the replacement encoder only when doing so is compatible with the current broadcast setup. If you are unsure whether the active event allows parallel testing, check Live Control Room first.
- Inspect the encoder or service logs for errors, then confirm in Live Control Room that YouTube is receiving the intended stream.
- Review the output itself: confirm video, audio, media rotation, and stability.
- Test a service restart. If your cutover plan permits, test a reboot and confirm the service returns and YouTube receives the stream again.
- Retain the old VPS and a rollback route until the replacement has been confirmed healthy; retire the source only after validation.
A local supervisor can restart a failed process, but a process showing as active does not prove that YouTube is receiving a valid broadcast. Verify both the local service and YouTube’s ingest status. See 24/7 YouTube streaming setup guide.

Neither approach is universally better. Carry over the system you already understand unless the migration is also an intentional redesign.

Troubleshooting a stream that fails after migration
Connection timeout, SSL error, or connection error
- Compare the scheme and host against the URL in Live Control Room. For RTMPS, use the RTMPS URL from there.
- Check the outbound network path and both host-level and provider-level firewall rules.
- YouTube lists port 443 as a troubleshooting option where the encoder setup requires it. Confirm the correct endpoint and port rather than changing them blindly. See YouTube Help: Stream using RTMPS.
The service is active, but no stream appears in YouTube
- Check the encoder command, destination URL, key, and selected broadcast.
- Inspect service and encoder logs, then check ingest status in Live Control Room. A local process supervisor only reports on the local process.
The old VPS connects, but the new one does not
- Compare firewall rules on the two hosts and in their provider dashboards.
- Test outbound connectivity from the new host to the configured ingest endpoint. Firewall or security software can interfere with streaming connections; OBS documents this as a troubleshooting cause at OBS stream connection troubleshooting.
Media is missing, repeats incorrectly, or loses audio/video sync
- Check transferred file paths, playlist entries, ownership, and permissions.
- Compare the new encoder command with the old one, including input-looping and timing options. Looping behavior in a sample setup is not necessarily right for your media.
The stream key may have been exposed
Replace a compromised key in YouTube’s stream settings and update the protected configuration on the new host. Keep the replacement out of source control and public logs.

YouTube checks beyond the server move
A working connection does not settle whether the content is suitable for your channel or broadcast. Review YouTube’s applicable copyright rules and reused-content policies for the videos you plan to loop. Only use media you have the rights to stream, and do not assume that moving a stream to another VPS changes the obligations attached to its content.
