In OBS Studio, add your files as a VLC Video playlist, set Settings → Video → Output (Scaled) Resolution to 1280×720, and configure the encoder for YouTube’s 720p ingest guidance. Use 1280×720 source files and avoid enlarging them or selecting a larger output if your goal is to avoid upscaling. YouTube still transcodes live input into multiple formats for viewers, so this controls your OBS output—not every viewer’s playback rendition.
Prepare the playlist in OBS
- Install VLC. OBS’s VLC Video source requires VLC to be installed. Match its architecture to OBS—for example, use 64-bit VLC with 64-bit OBS. OBS documentation lists common supported media formats including MP4, MOV, MKV, AVI, and WebM; compatibility can depend on the installed versions and codecs.
- Add the source. In the OBS Sources panel, select + → VLC Video. Give the source a name, then add the files to its playlist in the order you want them to play.
- Choose playback behavior. Turn on Loop Playlist to restart from the first file after the last one. OBS documentation says this option is on by default. Turn off Shuffle Playlist if order matters. Check what the source does when hidden—continue, pause, or stop—if your broadcast might switch scenes.
- Check the whole sequence. Preview each file and transition, including the last-to-first transition if looping. Confirm that picture and audio continue between clips.
Set the output to 720p
In OBS, open Settings → Video. Set Output (Scaled) Resolution to 1280×720. OBS distinguishes this stream/recording output from Base (Canvas) Resolution, the working scene size. For a simple setup using 720p assets, set both to 1280×720.
Set Common FPS Values to match the source cadence and the motion you want to preserve—commonly 30 or 60 fps. Check the playlist in preview at that setting. YouTube’s H.264 ingest recommendation is 8 Mbps for both 720p30 and 720p60; that does not mean the two frame rates look identical, or that every viewer will receive a 720p rendition.
Keep mixed media from being distorted
1280×720 is a 16:9 frame. If a playlist contains other aspect ratios or dimensions, fit or contain each item while retaining its proportions; unused areas may show as bars. Stretching an image to fill the frame can distort it. Inspect each clip and transition in the preview rather than assuming one transform suits the entire playlist.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
A 1280×720 output setting avoids asking OBS to produce a larger output frame, but lower-resolution clips do not gain real detail by being placed in that frame. The practical approach is to use 1280×720 files, keep the output at 1280×720, and avoid enlarging sources or changing output to 1080p or 4K. This is an operational way to avoid an intentional larger output, not a guarantee that every decoder and compositor stage performs no scaling.
Connect OBS to YouTube Live
- In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or select the live event.
- Copy the event’s server URL and stream key into OBS’s stream settings. Use the values for the event you intend to broadcast.
- Keep the stream key private. YouTube describes it as password-like: it identifies where the encoder sends the feed and lets YouTube accept it. Do not expose it in screenshots, overlays, or public instructions.
YouTube’s encoder settings documentation says resolution and frame rate are detected automatically by default. If using a custom stream key, it also describes an option for manual resolution detection. Interface labels may change; confirm the selected event and its key in Live Control Room before going live.
Configure encoder and audio settings
For H.264 at either 720p30 or 720p60, YouTube’s current English encoder table recommends an 8 Mbps video bitrate. Set rate control to CBR and the keyframe interval to 2 seconds; YouTube says not to exceed 4 seconds. YouTube also lists H.265 and AV1 ingest, but codec availability depends on the encoder you use. H.264 is a straightforward baseline for an OBS software-encoder workflow.
- Video codec: H.264 for a broadly suitable baseline.
- Rate control: CBR.
- Video bitrate: 8 Mbps for YouTube’s H.264 720p30 and 720p60 recommendations.
- Keyframes: every 2 seconds; do not exceed 4 seconds.
- Audio: YouTube lists AAC or MP3 for RTMP/RTMPS. Its detailed guidance specifies 128 Kbps for stereo.
- Transport: RTMP or RTMPS; YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted delivery when supported.
Match the selected frame rate and audio behavior to the files and check that playback remains smooth. These values describe YouTube’s incoming ingest guidance, not a promise about the rendition each viewer receives.

Test the stream before relying on it
Run a test with representative motion and audio before the intended broadcast. YouTube recommends keeping 20% network headroom above the total stream bitrate needs, including primary, backup, and other streams. Check upload capacity; download speed alone does not establish that the connection can sustain an upload.
- The OBS preview is 1280×720 and the frame rate is as intended.
- The playlist advances in the right order and loops—or ends—according to your setting.
- There is no blank interval between clips, and audio levels are acceptable.
- YouTube receives the signal and reports stream health without unresolved warnings.
- Your upload connection has the recommended headroom throughout the test.
Preview the event before starting it publicly, and monitor YouTube’s stream-health messages while it is live.
What “without upscaling” can and cannot guarantee
Setting OBS’s output to 1280×720 means the encoder is configured to send a 720p frame rather than a larger one. It does not lock YouTube’s viewer-side playback to a single format: YouTube Help says it automatically transcodes live streams into multiple output formats so viewers on different devices and networks can watch. A 720p source also cannot supply authentic 720p detail if its original image is smaller.
For YouTube’s explanation of transcoding and encoder settings, see Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions in YouTube Help. OBS’s Media Sources and Sources Guide document playlist behavior, output resolution, and source proportions.

Troubleshoot common problems
VLC Video is missing from the Sources menu
Install VLC and check that its architecture matches OBS, such as 64-bit VLC for 64-bit OBS. Restart OBS after installing VLC and check the source menu again.
YouTube does not receive a signal
Verify that the server URL and stream key in OBS match the selected event in Live Control Room. Treat the key as a password; if it has been exposed, replace or reset it through YouTube’s controls rather than continuing to use a compromised key.
The picture is stretched, cropped, or surrounded by bars
Check the source’s aspect ratio and its fit/contain transform in the scene. Fit or contain preserves proportions and may leave bars; stretching to fill distorts the image. Inspect every differently sized playlist item.
The stream buffers or YouTube reports poor health
Check upload—not just download—capacity, bitrate, and headroom. YouTube recommends a 20% margin above total stream bitrate needs. Test under the conditions expected during the broadcast and reduce competing upload traffic if capacity is insufficient.

Clips do not repeat or play in the expected order
Reopen the VLC Video source properties and check Loop Playlist and Shuffle Playlist. Also verify the source’s behavior when hidden if the broadcast changes scenes.
The stream is 720p in OBS, but viewers see other options
OBS’s output setting controls the encoder’s outgoing frame. YouTube transcodes live input into multiple formats, so viewer playback choices can differ from that input setting.
