Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →To keep video playing while OBS restarts, you need an independent backup encoder or relay that is already running and can take over the YouTube live event. Reusing the same YouTube stream key preserves encoder configuration; it does not keep video flowing while OBS is offline or guarantee that viewers avoid buffering or interruption. Test the handoff on the actual event before relying on it.
Why restarting OBS can interrupt a 24/7 stream
OBS is the process sending video and audio to YouTube. When you close or restart it, that feed stops until an encoder reconnects. A reusable stream key is a credential and destination for an encoder, not a backup feed. YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address” in its live stream settings help.
YouTube’s reviewed guidance does not promise a reconnect grace period, uninterrupted viewing during an OBS restart, or that every configuration will keep the same watch page. Viewers may see buffering or a break. Plan around a tested backup rather than assuming OBS will reconnect seamlessly.
Set up a backup that can run while OBS is down
- Choose a reusable key if needed. In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and configure a custom stream key if you need to reuse one. Enter the intended YouTube stream URL and key in OBS and in the backup encoder or relay. Keep the key private; anyone with it may be able to send a feed to your stream.
- Review auto-start and auto-stop. Check the Live Control Room settings for whether the encoder can start or stop the stream. These settings control encoder actions; they do not create a fallback feed.
- Keep the backup independent. The backup must remain operational while the OBS process is restarting. A second encoder on the same computer may not help if the restart, computer, or network affects both. Confirm how your chosen backup is designed to take over the intended YouTube event; do not assume different encoder or relay combinations behave alike.
- Test with OBS as the primary. Before depending on the arrangement, run a test stream with representative audio and motion. Check the Live Control Room preview and stream health, then view the public or unlisted watch page from another device or network.
- Simulate the failure. Stop the primary encoder—or disconnect its Ethernet connection—and check whether the player rolls over to the backup. This is YouTube’s recommended failover check in its live streaming tips. Confirm both that the backup takes over the intended event and that the viewer-facing page behaves acceptably.
- Restore OBS deliberately. Once the backup is carrying the feed, restart OBS and verify the output and stream health before switching back. The exact handoff sequence depends on your encoder or relay setup, so establish it during the test rather than improvising during a live broadcast.
What to check before you rely on failover
- Independence: Can the backup keep sending video if OBS is closed? Is it also independent of the computer or network you are restarting?
- Same event: Does the backup take over the intended YouTube live event, rather than starting a separate broadcast? YouTube advises checking player rollover, but does not claim every setup behaves identically.
- Viewer experience: Watch from another device or network. A healthy encoder dashboard alone does not establish what viewers see, and the official guidance does not quantify viewer retention or promise zero interruption.
- Operational trade-off: A local backup needs additional setup and a suitable independent path. A cloud relay or managed service adds service and configuration considerations; verify its specific handoff behavior before depending on it.
Troubleshoot a failed handoff or reconnect
YouTube’s encoder troubleshooting guide recommends checking encoder software and the sending connection. Use the symptoms below to narrow down the failure:

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- No feed appears in YouTube: Check that the active encoder is sending to the intended stream URL and key, then inspect OBS output and Live Control Room messages.
- The backup does not take over: Confirm that it is running and configured for the intended event. Repeat the failover test and watch the player; sharing a key alone does not establish that the handoff works.
- The feed is unstable: Inspect encoder output, YouTube dashboard errors, CPU load, and the outbound connection. Update encoder software as part of troubleshooting.
- The dashboard looks healthy but viewers report a break: Check the watch page from a separate device or network during a controlled test. The reviewed YouTube guidance does not establish that a healthy encoder status guarantees an uninterrupted player experience.
Ending a stream is different from restarting OBS
For an intentional end to an event, YouTube instructs creators to end the stream and stop sending content from the encoder. Its encoder setup guide says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That archive behavior is not a guarantee about a 24/7 event or about recovery after an OBS restart.
