For a prerecorded 720p60 video, use FFmpeg to read the file in real time, encode H.264 at YouTube’s recommended 8 Mbps target with constant bitrate (CBR), set a two-second keyframe interval, encode stereo AAC audio, and send the output over RTMPS using the URL and stream key from YouTube Live Control Room. YouTube lists 3 Mbps as the minimum H.264 bitrate for 720p60; the 8 Mbps recommendation is an ingestion target, not a promise of final picture quality. YouTube’s live encoder settings are current as checked on October 3, 2026.
Recommended FFmpeg settings for 720p60
| Setting | Value | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Frame size and rate | 1280×720 at 60 fps | Matches the intended 720p60 stream format, when the source supports it. |
| Video codec | H.264 | A supported choice for YouTube Live. |
| Video bitrate | 8 Mbps recommended; 3 Mbps minimum | YouTube’s H.264 recommendation for 720p60. The source, encoder quality, and network stability also affect the result. |
| Rate control | CBR | YouTube specifies constant bitrate for live encoding. |
| Keyframes | Every 2 seconds; do not exceed 4 seconds | At 60 fps, a two-second GOP is 120 frames. |
| Audio | AAC, stereo, 128 Kbps | A straightforward compatible audio setting; YouTube lists 128 Kbps for stereo audio. |
| Transport | RTMPS | YouTube recommends encrypted RTMPS ingestion for the standard workflow. |
These are YouTube ingestion settings, not guarantees that an original file will look better after encoding. A low-resolution, heavily compressed, or low-frame-rate source cannot gain genuine detail simply by being scaled to 720p60.
Prepare the YouTube stream and key
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and create or select the live stream you intend to use.
- Copy the RTMPS server URL and stream key shown for that stream. Use the exact values in FFmpeg; do not share the key, since anyone who has it may be able to send video to your stream.
- Confirm the stream is configured for the intended 720p60 output and that your channel is eligible to go live. YouTube’s live-stream requirements and interface can change, so check the current Live Control Room prompts.
YouTube’s setup guidance explains the RTMPS URL and key workflow: Set up your encoder for live streaming.
Run a prerecorded file through FFmpeg
This command is an adaptable pattern, not a tested command. Replace the filename and RTMPS address/key placeholders. Depending on your FFmpeg build and source media, you may need to adjust stream mapping, filters, or encoder availability.

What the important options do
-rereads the media at its native rate rather than sending it as fast as possible. This matters when a file is used as a live feed.-vfscales the picture to 1280×720, sets the output rate to 60 fps, and uses the broadly compatible yuv420p pixel format. Scaling and frame-rate conversion do not restore detail or motion absent from the source.-c:v libx264selects the H.264 encoder, if it is present in the installed FFmpeg build.-preset veryfasttrades some compression efficiency for lower encoding demand; choose a slower preset only if the computer can encode in real time without falling behind.-b:v,-minrate, and-maxrateconstrain the video rate around 8 Mbps for CBR-style output.-bufsize 16Msets the encoder’s rate-control buffer; YouTube’s published guidance specifies CBR but does not mandate this particular buffer size.-g 120and-keyint_min 120set a 120-frame GOP, or two seconds at 60 fps.-sc_threshold 0disables scene-cut keyframe insertion that could disrupt a fixed interval.-c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100 -ac 2encodes stereo AAC at 128 Kbps and 44.1 kHz.-f flvselects the FLV muxer used in FFmpeg’s documented RTMP file-output pattern. RTMPS uses the encrypted RTMP endpoint supplied by YouTube.
FFmpeg documents real-time file reading with -re and sending a file through the FLV muxer to an RTMP server in its command-line documentation. The example above should be checked locally; its filter chain, encoder, buffer choice, and endpoint syntax are not a claim that a particular command has been executed successfully.
When stream-copying might work
If the source already has suitable H.264 video and audio, compatible timestamps and container handling, and the required keyframe cadence, stream-copying may avoid re-encoding. Do not assume a file is compliant from its extension or resolution alone: inspect its codecs, frame rate, audio, and keyframe timing first, and test it in Live Control Room. The cited YouTube and FFmpeg material does not certify any particular source file.

Check the upload path and test before going live
- Make sure the computer can encode at least 60 frames per second in real time. If FFmpeg falls behind, reduce encoding load or use an encoder and settings the machine can sustain.
- Keep reliable upload capacity above the total stream bitrate, including audio and network overhead. YouTube recommends checking upload speed rather than relying on a nominal connection plan.
- Run a private or otherwise appropriate test before the intended broadcast. Use video with movement and audio resembling the actual program, then check picture, sound, timing, and YouTube’s stream-health status.
- Monitor Live Control Room messages while sending. A successful connection alone does not establish that the video and audio are healthy.
YouTube’s Live Streaming API describes diagnostics for problems such as low bitrate, unsupported video codec, keyframe intervals longer than four seconds, and multiple audio or video streams. See LiveStreams health status to understand the reported conditions.
RTMPS or HLS?
For the command pattern above, RTMPS is the practical default: YouTube recommends it, and it encrypts the connection to the service. HLS ingestion is also supported for suitable workflows, but it is segment-based, usually has higher latency than RTMP- and WebRTC-based ingestion, and has separate container and segment requirements. It is not a drop-in replacement for the FLV/RTMPS command. See YouTube’s encoder settings and ingestion guidance and HLS ingestion requirements.

Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| FFmpeg connects but the stream is unhealthy or stalls | Upload capacity is insufficient, the encoder cannot keep pace, or bitrate varies too much. | Check upload performance and FFmpeg output; use a sustainable encoding preset and keep the stream’s total rate within reliable capacity. |
| YouTube reports a long keyframe interval | The encoded GOP is longer than the allowed interval, or the encoder is inserting keyframes differently than expected. | At 60 fps, verify the two-second 120-frame GOP settings and confirm YouTube’s health diagnostics no longer flag the interval. |
| Video codec warning | The output codec is unsupported or the requested encoder is unavailable. | Confirm the actual output is H.264 and that your FFmpeg build includes libx264, or choose a supported encoder available in your build. |
| Audio is missing or invalid | The source has no audio stream, stream mapping selects the wrong track, or the output audio is not compatible. | Inspect the input streams, adjust mapping if needed, and confirm stereo AAC output is reaching YouTube. |
| Connection is rejected | The RTMPS URL or stream key is wrong, stale, or copied with extra/missing characters. | Copy the current values again from Live Control Room and keep the key private. |
| The image looks soft or motion looks unnatural | The source may be below 720p60, or scaling and frame-rate conversion cannot recreate missing detail or frames. | Use a higher-quality source when available; avoid treating output resolution as proof of source quality. |
Copyright and YouTube live eligibility
FFmpeg settings cannot establish that you have the rights to broadcast a video, music track, or other included material. Before streaming, verify that you own the relevant rights or have permission for live use, and review YouTube’s current live-stream and copyright rules in YouTube Studio. A technically valid feed may still receive a copyright claim, be interrupted, or be subject to channel restrictions.
