OBS YouTube Live Settings for 4K 30fps Playlist Streaming

Use 3840×2160 at 30 fps, CBR, and 2-second keyframes for YouTube Live. Recommended 4K30 bitrate is 42 Mbps for H.264 or 30 Mbps for AV1/H.265.

For a 4K, 30 fps YouTube Live stream in OBS, set the output to 3840×2160 at 30 fps, use CBR, and set keyframes every 2 seconds. YouTube’s current recommended video bitrate is 42 Mbps with H.264 or 30 Mbps with AV1/H.265. Those are platform targets—not a guarantee your computer or internet connection can sustain them. Test the playlist, sound, and motion before going live, and watch stream health.

Recommended OBS settings for YouTube Live at 4K30

Setting Value Notes
Output resolution 3840×2160 Set the output sent to YouTube, not just the OBS canvas.
Frame rate 30 fps In OBS, select 30 under Common FPS Value.
Rate control CBR YouTube’s RTMP/RTMPS encoder guidance specifies constant bitrate.
Keyframe interval 2 seconds YouTube recommends 2 seconds and says not to exceed 4 seconds.
Video bitrate 42 Mbps for H.264; 30 Mbps for AV1 or H.265/HEVC These are YouTube’s 4K/2160p 30 fps recommendations. Listed minimums are 11 Mbps for H.264 and 8 Mbps for AV1/H.265.
Protocol RTMPS recommended YouTube lists RTMP/RTMPS and recommends RTMPS.
Latency Normal YouTube uses normal latency for 2160p; low latency is unavailable at 4K.

These settings follow YouTube’s [live encoder settings and bitrate guidance]. Choose a bitrate your upload connection can sustain consistently, not merely a speed-test peak. OBS also warns that capability depends on the encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity; compatible hardware alone does not guarantee stable streaming (OBS system requirements).

Set up OBS and connect the YouTube stream

  1. Create or select the stream: In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create a live stream or select one whose settings you want to reuse. Copy its stream URL and stream key. YouTube permits reusing prior settings and keys. Treat the key like a password; if it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room. See YouTube’s live streaming setup guidance.
  2. Connect OBS: In OBS, choose YouTube as the streaming service, or enter the appropriate server and stream key if configuring a custom destination. Do not share or display the key in a recording or screenshot.
  3. Set the video output: Open Settings → Video. Set Output (Scaled) Resolution to 3840×2160 and Common FPS Value to 30. The canvas is OBS’s workspace for arranging and fitting sources; the output resolution is what OBS sends to the stream. Check both if the picture is unexpectedly scaled or cropped. OBS documents these controls in its OBS Studio guidance.
  4. Set encoding: Open Settings → Output, select the streaming encoder available on your system, set rate control to CBR, and enter the bitrate for the codec you are actually sending. Set the keyframe interval to 2 seconds. OBS’s available encoders depend on the installed hardware and software; YouTube’s codec bitrate recommendations do not identify a universally best encoder for every computer.
  5. Choose the codec with your system and connection in mind: YouTube lists 42 Mbps for H.264 and 30 Mbps for AV1/H.265 at 4K30. The lower recommended bitrate for AV1/H.265 does not by itself make those codecs the right choice: encoder support, processing load, image quality at the available rate, and reliable network headroom all matter. If your setup cannot sustain its selected rate, reduce bitrate and consider lowering output resolution rather than accepting repeated connection drops or viewer buffering.
  6. Confirm audio and run a test: Verify the intended audio source is active and not duplicated, muted, or clipping. Test with representative movement and sound, then watch OBS performance and YouTube stream health. YouTube recommends testing before going live; OBS likewise advises testing the system and configuration in advance.
  7. Record a local backup: In OBS, enable recording alongside streaming if your system and storage can handle both. OBS recommends MKV for recordings because an ungraceful shutdown will not corrupt the entire file; remux afterward if you need another format. YouTube automatically archives 1440p and 2160p live streams, but a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. See YouTube’s archive guidance.

Make sure the playlist really plays through OBS

A YouTube playlist and an OBS live stream are separate things: do not assume the YouTube playlist feature supplies videos to an OBS encoder. OBS must receive the video and audio from an actual source workflow, such as an OBS media source, VLC, or an add-on. The exact steps vary with that source and are not established by the general YouTube and OBS settings guidance.

Before a public broadcast, configure your chosen source to play the intended files and run a private or unlisted test. Observe the start, transitions between items, end of the list, and any restart or loop behavior you expect. Confirm that video and audio remain present at each boundary. A source that plays one file successfully may still fail to advance or loop as intended during a longer session.

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Test stability, playback quality, and archiving

  • Check connection headroom: Use a sustained upload connection that can carry the selected bitrate reliably, with room for normal network variation. A brief peak does not prove an unattended stream will remain stable.
  • Watch both sides of the stream: Monitor OBS for encoding or connection problems and YouTube’s stream health for ingest issues. Also check the stream from a viewer’s perspective, including audio and item transitions.
  • Expect viewer quality options to be transcoded: YouTube transcodes live streams into multiple output formats so viewers can select a quality suited to their device and connection. Consistent keyframe intervals help quality switching.
  • Keep a separate archive for long broadcasts: YouTube’s automatic archive is useful, but it is not a dependable sole backup for streams exceeding 12 hours. A local recording is a separate safeguard.

Common problems and fixes

Symptom What to check Fix
OBS will not connect to YouTube Service, server, stream URL, and stream key. Recheck the destination details in Live Control Room. If the key may have been exposed or invalidated, reset it there and update OBS.
Stream buffers or drops frames Whether upload capacity can reliably sustain the chosen bitrate; OBS and YouTube stream-health indicators. Lower the bitrate and, if needed, reduce output resolution. Do not use the platform’s recommended target if your connection cannot maintain it.
Picture is not 4K or appears scaled OBS’s canvas and Output (Scaled) Resolution. Set the output to 3840×2160 and verify the source fits the canvas as intended.
Image looks poor despite a high bitrate Actual output codec, frame rate, resolution, encoder load, and stream health. Confirm OBS is sending the expected codec and 4K30 output; test representative motion. A bitrate recommendation cannot compensate for encoder overload or an unstable connection.
Playlist stops, repeats incorrectly, or has silent transitions The behavior of the particular media source, VLC setup, or add-on—not just YouTube’s stream settings. Test item boundaries, end-of-list behavior, and audio in a private or unlisted stream; adjust the source workflow before the public broadcast.
No YouTube archive appears after a very long broadcast Stream duration. Streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured. Use an OBS local recording as a backup.
