Yes, in principle: Indian creators can use YouTube Live Redirect with an encoder running on a VPS, as long as the channel meets YouTube’s eligibility rules and the VPS can deliver a stable, supported stream. YouTube’s documentation covers encoder-based streaming but does not explicitly certify VPS hosting or promise compatibility with every provider or region. Set it up and verify stream health in YouTube Live Control Room before relying on it for an event.
What Live Redirect does—and what it does not do
Live Redirect is a YouTube Studio feature that hands viewers from one live stream to another eligible destination when the source stream ends. It does not depend on where you configure the redirect: the handoff is set up in Studio, while an encoder sends the source stream to YouTube. YouTube documents encoder and stream-key workflows without stating that the encoder must run on a local computer. That supports a qualified yes for a VPS, not a guarantee for every host, network route, or configuration. YouTube’s Live Redirect guidance and its encoder streaming guidance explain the relevant workflows.
Eligibility and permissions to check first
Your channel’s live-streaming access
- Your channel must be verified and have no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. See YouTube’s live-streaming access requirements.
- To send a Live Redirect, YouTube requires more than 1,000 subscribers and no Community Guidelines strikes. This is a sender requirement; meeting it does not by itself resolve other account or feature-access issues. YouTube Help: How to use YouTube Live Redirect.
The destination channel’s permission
If you are redirecting viewers to another creator’s live stream, that channel must allow your channel to redirect to it. The destination creator can configure permission for all channels, subscribed channels, or specifically approved channels. Without the necessary permission, the destination may not appear as an option in your Studio setup. You can also choose an eligible Premiere on your own channel. YouTube’s redirect instructions describe the permission choices.
Set up the redirect in YouTube Studio
- Arrange destination permission if needed. Ask the receiving channel to allow your channel to redirect to its live stream, using the permission scope it prefers.
- Open the source live item. In YouTube Studio, open Content, select the Live item you want to edit, and open Customization.
- Choose the destination. Under Redirect, select Add, then choose an eligible Premiere or live stream from the destinations shown.
- Save and verify. Confirm that the chosen destination is attached to the source stream before the broadcast. Follow YouTube’s current Studio prompts if labels or layout differ.
The handoff takes place after the source stream ends. YouTube advises allowing viewers a few seconds for their screens to reload. A viewer who has disabled autoplay may need to click play rather than transition automatically. Tell your audience what to expect, especially if the destination is on another channel. Send the source stream from a VPS
A VPS-hosted encoder is a practical option if it can send a compatible feed to YouTube reliably. The VPS is not where Live Redirect is configured; it runs the encoder that sends the source stream. YouTube’s documented encoder workflow uses the stream URL and stream key from Live Control Room. Its guidance recommends RTMPS, a secure extension of RTMP. YouTube does not specifically validate VPS providers or locations, so treat compatibility as something to test rather than a platform guarantee. Encoder setup · Encrypt your stream using RTMPS.
- Prepare an encoder on the VPS. Use an encoder that can send a live feed to YouTube. Make sure the VPS provider permits the required outbound streaming traffic and that you can monitor or restart the encoder remotely.
- Get the connection details. In Live Control Room, use the stream URL and stream key for the broadcast. Treat the key as a password: do not publish it, share it unnecessarily, or expose it in logs or screenshots.
- Configure the encoder’s destination. Enter the URL and key in the encoder, using RTMPS when available. Choose an output bitrate your VPS’s sustained outbound connection can support.
- Leave bandwidth headroom. YouTube recommends keeping upload bandwidth 20% above the bitrate of the stream. A VPS plan’s advertised port speed is not proof that your particular stream will have stable throughput; check the actual feed and stream-health indicators.
- Test before the event. Start an unlisted or private test, check the preview and stream-health status in Live Control Room, and verify the source stream is reachable before scheduling or promoting the handoff.
- Test the redirect end to end. Confirm that the selected destination is correct and that the transition behaves as expected. If possible, check from a viewer account with autoplay enabled and disabled so you can explain any manual click needed.

Does the answer change for creators in India?
The reviewed YouTube Help documentation sets out general channel eligibility and encoder/network requirements; it does not list an India-specific restriction or a VPS-region requirement for Live Redirect. That absence is not a universal guarantee of availability: feature access can depend on an individual account, and provider policies or network routes can affect whether a particular VPS setup works. Check the feature in your own Studio account and test the stream from the VPS before a production broadcast. Live Redirect guidance · encoder guidance.
VPS or a local computer?
YouTube’s documentation does not rank one hosting arrangement over the other. Choose based on the reliability and manageability of the particular setup rather than an assumption that YouTube prefers one.

Troubleshooting a VPS Live Redirect setup
The redirect destination does not appear
- Check that your channel meets Live Redirect sender eligibility.
- If the destination is another creator’s live stream, ask that channel to authorize redirects from you; confirm its permission scope includes your channel.
- Verify you are editing the correct Live item under Content and looking under Customization > Redirect.
YouTube does not receive the VPS feed or reports poor stream health
- Recheck the stream URL and key in Live Control Room against the encoder’s destination settings.
- Use RTMPS when supported, and confirm that the VPS provider’s firewall or network rules permit the connection.
- Reduce the encoder bitrate if sustained outbound bandwidth is insufficient, while preserving YouTube’s recommended 20% upload headroom above the stream bitrate.
- Use Live Control Room’s preview and stream-health status to distinguish a connection problem from a redirect configuration problem.
The handoff does not happen automatically for a viewer
- Allow a few seconds after the source ends for the viewer’s screen to reload.
- Explain that a viewer with autoplay disabled may have to click play to open the destination.
- Test the destination and transition before the event; a successful source stream alone does not confirm that the redirect is configured correctly.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep uploaded video playing as a YouTube live stream without managing an encoder on a VPS, StreamNeo is a cloud service for that specific workflow: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It is not a camera-streaming service. The stream keeps running without a computer at home, plays your upload as made up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card; Monthly is $9.99 per month. For Indian users, UPI is supported. Start the free day with StreamNeo.
