For a typical H.264 YouTube Live stream from FFmpeg, use RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval, and the bitrate YouTube recommends for your resolution and frame rate. With an NVIDIA GPU and an FFmpeg build that supports NVENC, h264_nvenc is a practical starting encoder. The right preset depends on your GPU and workload, so test a full stream before relying on it live.

Recommended YouTube Live settings at a glance

For a broadly compatible SDR stream, start with H.264 over RTMPS. Set CBR and a two-second keyframe interval, then match the video bitrate to YouTube’s H.264 recommendation for your chosen resolution and frame rate. YouTube lists a maximum of 60 fps and recommends a four-second maximum keyframe interval; use two seconds as the normal target.

Ingest resolution and frame rate YouTube-recommended H.264 bitrate
2160p60 50 Mbps
2160p30 42 Mbps
1440p60 34 Mbps
1440p30 21 Mbps
1080p60 17 Mbps
1080p30 14 Mbps
720p60 8 Mbps
720p30 8 Mbps
480p30 4 Mbps
360p30 4 Mbps

These are the current values displayed in YouTube Help’s Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions page, accessed October 3, 2026; the retrieved page does not state a publication year. They are platform recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular internet connection or encoder can sustain them. For example, YouTube recommends 17 Mbps for H.264 at 1080p60. Leave stable upload capacity beyond the video bitrate for audio and network variation, and verify stream health during a test.

Choose resolution, frame rate, codec, and transport

Resolution and frame rate

Higher resolutions preserve more detail, while higher frame rates can make fast gameplay look smoother. Both raise the demands on upload capacity and real-time encoding. Choose a target your source can produce consistently and your connection can sustain; do not select 1080p60 merely because it is a common gaming format if the GPU or upload path struggles.

Codec

H.264 is the straightforward baseline for an NVENC workflow and has a dedicated bitrate table above. YouTube also lists HEVC and AV1 as accepted codecs. Use those only when your GPU, FFmpeg build, and ingest workflow support the chosen codec and there is a reason to prefer it; the H.264 bitrate figures should not be treated as recommendations for other codecs.

RTMPS

Use RTMPS where available for encrypted transport. YouTube lists RTMP and RTMPS as ingest protocols and recommends RTMPS. Copy the server URL and stream key from YouTube Studio rather than substituting a guessed address.

Configure FFmpeg’s NVENC encoder

First confirm that your NVIDIA GPU supports the codec and features you intend to use, and that your installed FFmpeg build exposes NVENC. Support depends on GPU generation, driver/runtime, and the particular FFmpeg build; having an NVIDIA card alone does not prove that every codec option is available.

Preset and tuning

NVENC presets trade encoding speed against quality. Presets such as p4 or p5 are reasonable candidates to test, not universal best choices. NVIDIA’s guidance treats preset selection and low-latency tuning as workload-dependent. For real-time broadcasting, the relevant tune and rate-control options must be supported by your installed build; inspect its help output and verify the result under load.

A conceptual H.264 encoding fragment is:

-c:v h264_nvenc -preset p4 -tune ll -rc cbr -b:v <target-bitrate> -maxrate <matching-bitrate> -bufsize <chosen-vbv-buffer> -g <two-seconds-of-frames> -bf 2

This is a settings fragment, not a tested, complete FFmpeg command. Replace placeholders with values appropriate to your source and target. In FFmpeg, input options generally belong before the input they affect, and output encoding options go before the output destination; option placement matters. Consult the installed build’s ffmpeg -h encoder=h264_nvenc output because available names and behavior vary by version.

Keyframes, B-frames, and buffer

A two-second GOP means setting -g to twice the frame rate: 60 at 30 fps or 120 at 60 fps. Confirm actual keyframe behavior with the encoder and YouTube’s stream health feedback. YouTube’s advanced recommendations include two B-frames and one reference frame, alongside CABAC for H.264. Check that the NVENC options you use produce the intended settings rather than assuming an option is accepted or honored.

Set the VBV buffer deliberately and test it; there is no universal buffer value established for every FFmpeg build and live workload. NVIDIA documents CBR with a one-second VBV buffer for its real-time game and studio broadcasting scenario, but that is NVIDIA’s guidance for that scenario, not a YouTube requirement. Avoid copying file-encoding examples wholesale: buffering, lookahead, GOP, and rate-control choices intended for post-production may not suit live ingest.

Set picture and audio properties

YouTube’s advanced H.264 recommendations for SDR include square pixels, progressive scan, Rec. 709 color, and 8-bit SDR. Match the output to the actual source; unnecessary scaling or frame-rate conversion can add processing load without improving the source.

YouTube lists AAC or MP3 audio. For stereo, it recommends a 44.1 kHz sample rate and 128 Kbps bitrate. Check the complete audio path as well as video: a stream can appear to connect while its sound is missing, distorted, or out of sync.

Test before going live and monitor the stream

  1. Confirm the target. Choose resolution, frame rate, codec, and the matching YouTube bitrate recommendation.
  2. Verify the local encoder. Check that FFmpeg recognizes h264_nvenc and accepts the preset, tune, and other options you plan to use.
  3. Run a representative test. Include the kind of movement, scene changes, and audio expected during the actual stream. A static desktop does not reveal how the encoder handles fast gameplay.
  4. Check YouTube Studio. Follow its stream health indicators and messages during the test and event. A process that starts successfully is not proof of a healthy ingest.
  5. Adjust one variable at a time. If the stream is unstable, reduce the target resolution, frame rate, or bitrate to a level the connection and encoder can sustain, then test again.

YouTube’s encoder guidance says, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream,” and advises monitoring stream health and reviewing messages during the event. Lower latency can help interaction, but YouTube notes that choosing lower latency may mean more buffering; prioritize stable playback if real-time interaction is not essential.

Troubleshoot common FFmpeg and YouTube Live problems

  • FFmpeg says the encoder is unavailable: The installed build may lack NVENC support, or the GPU/runtime combination may not expose the required capability. Check the build’s encoder list and ffmpeg -h encoder=h264_nvenc, then confirm support for your particular GPU and driver/runtime.
  • YouTube reports an unstable or unhealthy stream: The upload path may not sustain the configured bitrate, or the encoder may be falling behind. Test representative gameplay, reduce resolution, frame rate, or bitrate, and review YouTube Studio’s specific health messages before changing settings.
  • The stream connects but keyframe or ingest warnings appear: Check that CBR is selected and the GOP corresponds to two seconds at the output frame rate. Confirm that the actual encoder output follows the intended keyframe interval rather than relying only on the command-line value.
  • The picture is poor despite matching the table: The bitrate figures are recommendations for H.264 at a specified resolution and frame rate, not a promise of quality independent of source content. Inspect the source resolution and motion, verify the output settings, and test a lower frame rate or resolution if the available bitrate or real-time encoding headroom is limited.
  • There is no sound or the audio is wrong: Check that the intended audio input is mapped, that the encoder is producing AAC or MP3, and that stereo uses the recommended sample rate and bitrate. Listen to the test from YouTube’s playback, not only from the local source.

Copyright and YouTube live eligibility

Encoder settings do not grant permission to stream game footage, music, or other material. Use content you own or have permission to broadcast, and check the applicable game publisher’s streaming policy, music licenses, and YouTube rules before going live. A technically healthy feed can still receive a copyright claim or be interrupted for policy reasons.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is a continuous YouTube channel rather than a live gameplay capture, StreamNeo is a cloud service for looping uploaded videos or playlists. Upload the recording, add your YouTube stream key, and go live; no computer, OBS, or home connection has to stay on. It plays uploaded videos rather than broadcasting a camera feed.
