YouTube requires a verified channel to livestream, and phone verification unlocks live streaming. YouTube’s published eligibility guidance does not list a separate phone-verification step for a stream just because it runs 24/7; that is an inference from its general rules, not a guarantee that a continuous broadcast will remain uninterrupted.
What YouTube requires before you can livestream
YouTube’s computer livestreaming guidance says a channel must be verified and have had no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. YouTube’s phone-verification guidance lists live streaming among the features unlocked by verifying a phone number. A channel with a current restriction may therefore be unable to stream even if it has completed phone verification.
To verify, use YouTube’s phone verification flow and receive the code by text message or voice call. YouTube says a phone number can be linked to no more than two channels per year. YouTube’s verification guidance explains the number check and the features unlocked.
Does a 24/7 duration add another verification rule?
The official guidance reviewed does not identify 24/7 duration as a separate phone-verification category or specify that an individual continuous stream must stop after a set number of hours. The practical answer is that the same verification and eligibility rules apply; duration alone is not documented as an extra phone-verification trigger. This is an inference from YouTube’s general eligibility guidance, not a promise that every channel can keep a stream running without interruption. Channel status, feature limits, and any other applicable eligibility conditions still matter.

Check eligibility and allow for activation
- Phone-verify the channel. Complete YouTube’s phone verification using the code sent by text or voice call.
- Check YouTube Studio. Open the channel’s Feature eligibility screen and confirm that live streaming is available. Review the channel for any live-streaming restriction in the last 90 days.
- Allow time for first-time activation. YouTube says enabling livestreaming for the first time may take up to 24 hours. This is an activation delay, not a maximum stream duration; after activation, a stream can start instantly.
- Check the relevant access limits. YouTube’s feature-access table shows limited daily limits for computer live streaming at phone-verification access and higher daily limits at advanced access. Check the current access level and limits for your channel rather than assuming verification means unlimited use.
YouTube may offer advanced feature access based on sufficient channel history or ID/video identity verification. That is distinct from the phone verification used to unlock intermediate features such as livestreaming; advanced access can raise limits for some features. Choose a broadcast workflow separately from eligibility
Verification determines whether the channel can livestream; it does not dictate how you produce the broadcast. YouTube supports software and hardware encoders, and recommends professional-grade hardware encoders for higher-production-value events. An encoder is optional production equipment, not a substitute for channel verification. YouTube’s guidance does not establish a comparative cost, reliability, or 24/7 uptime ranking for software versus hardware encoders. See YouTube’s encoder guidance.
