A reusable YouTube stream key does not keep a live event open. It lets an encoder connect using saved stream settings; whether a later cloud-streaming session joins the same event depends on that event’s status and the provider’s reconnect behavior. For a scheduled broadcast, select the intended event in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, connect the encoder with that event’s stream URL and key, wait for the preview, and click Go live.
Why a reused stream key can still lead to a new live event
YouTube describes stream keys as the credentials an encoder uses to send a feed. Its live stream settings guidance says that reusing settings creates a new stream with the previous stream’s metadata, settings, and key. That reuses configuration; it does not establish that an ended event remains open for another broadcast.
A scheduled live stream is an event managed separately in Live Control Room. The encoder connects to the selected event using its stream URL and key. If the cloud service starts another encoder session after YouTube has ended the event, YouTube’s documentation does not guarantee that the session will continue inside the old event. Check the event’s status rather than assuming that the same key means the same event.
Set up a scheduled stream for the intended event
- Choose the event plan. Decide whether each loop should be a separate scheduled and published event, or whether you intend to keep one event continuously active. A reusable key does not make this choice for you.
- Create or select the event. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and use the Manage tab to create or select the scheduled broadcast. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions distinguish scheduled broadcasts from immediate streams.
- Match the cloud job to the event. Enter that event’s stream URL and stream key in the cloud encoder. For recurring use, keep a clear record of which event and key belong to each cloud job so a restart is not accidentally connected to a different event.
- Check before going live. Confirm the selected event and wait for its preview to appear. YouTube’s documented sequence is to wait for the preview and then click Go live.
- End a finished broadcast deliberately. When the event should end, click End Stream in Live Control Room and stop sending content from the encoder. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; that archive behavior is not a promise that an ended event can be resumed.
What Auto-start and Auto-stop do—and do not do
YouTube offers Auto-start and Auto-stop settings that let the encoder start or stop streaming. Reused settings copy those selections. They control encoder-triggered starting and stopping; YouTube does not describe them as a way to keep one event permanently open across repeated sessions. If your workflow depends on them, check the event state and confirm how your cloud provider handles a disconnect or restart.

If the event has already ended
Treat an event YouTube marks as ended as a completed event unless the current YouTube interface and your cloud provider’s documentation establish otherwise. Reusing the same key or settings is not evidence that the next session will reopen that event. Schedule or create a new event when you intend a separate broadcast, then connect the cloud encoder to that event’s URL and key.
If you want one event to remain active through a loop or interruption, do not click End Stream simply to finish one segment. The official YouTube pages explain how to connect and end a scheduled stream, but do not specify how long a cloud service can reconnect or whether it will resume the same event. Verify that behavior with the provider before relying on an unattended loop.

Choose between a reusable setup and separate scheduled events
| Workflow question | Reusable stream setup | Separate scheduled events |
|---|---|---|
| Does the audience need an event page in advance? | Not necessarily; the key reuses encoder settings, not an event that stays open. | Yes, when you want a distinct scheduled broadcast and event page. |
| What does the cloud encoder target? | The stream configuration associated with the selected setup; verify the event and key in Live Control Room. | The URL and key for the specific event selected in Live Control Room. |
| Can encoder controls start or stop the feed? | Auto-start and Auto-stop can let the encoder start or stop streaming. | The same controls are available, but they do not guarantee a permanent event. |
| What happens after a cloud interruption? | Provider-specific; YouTube’s documentation does not give a universal reconnect guarantee. | Provider-specific; verify the event status and service instructions before restarting. |
The distinction is between reusing connection settings and managing the lifecycle of a YouTube event. Pick the workflow according to whether the audience needs separate scheduled broadcasts, and verify cloud reconnection behavior with the service you use.
Troubleshoot a new event or failed connection
- A new event appears after a restart: Check whether the earlier event is marked ended in Live Control Room. If it is, use a new event for a separate broadcast; do not expect the key alone to reopen the old one.
- The cloud encoder connects to the wrong broadcast: Compare its configured stream URL and key with the event selected in the Live Control Room’s Manage tab. Correct the cloud job’s target before going live.
- No preview appears or the encoder reports a startup error: YouTube’s stream troubleshooting guidance advises getting a stream key in Live Control Room and updating the encoder. Recheck the key and event, then wait for the preview before selecting Go live.
- The feed stops when a loop segment ends: Check the Auto-stop setting and the cloud provider’s behavior at the end of a file or after a disconnect. YouTube’s Auto-stop setting is an encoder control, not a guarantee that a cloud service will keep an event open.
- You need the same event to resume after a disconnect: Confirm that the event is still active in Live Control Room and consult the provider’s current reconnect instructions. YouTube does not document a universal cloud-reconnect policy.
