Valve’s public Steam Link support FAQ and the SteamVR beta notes reviewed through 23 September 2026 do not document a removal of a Vulkan requirement. That leaves the headline claim unverified: the notes neither identify the alleged requirement nor say when or in which build it changed. Valve’s latest listed beta, SteamVR 2.18.1, does include Quest USB streaming support and other streaming fixes, but not a Vulkan change.
What Valve’s documentation confirms—and what it doesn’t
Valve describes Steam Link as software that streams games from a computer running Steam and SteamVR to supported Meta Quest, consumer HTC Vive Focus, and PICO headsets. Its [Steam Link FAQ](https://help.steampowered.com/en/faqs/view/18A4-1E10-8A94-3DDA) lists host, operating-system, headset, and wireless-network requirements. It does not mention Vulkan, describe a Vulkan-related Steam Link failure, or provide a change history for the alleged removal.
Likewise, Valve’s latest inspected [SteamVR beta announcement](https://steamcommunity.com/games/250820/announcements/detail/531590901188559049) is for version 2.18.1, dated 23 September 2026. Its listed changes include Quest USB support and streaming fixes, but not removal of a Vulkan requirement. This is a finding about Valve’s public documentation, not proof that no undocumented code change occurred.
Steam Link’s published requirements
Valve’s FAQ gives these requirements for Steam Link. They are the requirements Valve publishes; they do not establish anything about the unconfirmed Vulkan claim.

- Supported headsets: Meta Quest 2, Quest 3, or Quest Pro; PICO 4 Ultra, PICO 4, or PICO Neo 3; HTC Vive Focus Vision or HTC VIVE XR Elite.

Valve says Steam Link is free to download from the headset or phone store. Business HTC headsets are not officially supported at this time.
What the latest beta changes for Quest users
SteamVR beta 2.18.1, dated 23 September 2026, adds tethered Quest support over USB when used with the Steam Link beta. Its notes also list fixes for video corruption, checkerboarding, and streams that get stuck; improved automatic bitrate selection; and an option for a Meta headset to override the host frame rate when that rate is configured manually at the operating-system level.

Valve’s [15 September 2026 beta 2.17.10 notes](https://steamcommunity.com/games/250820/announcements/detail/535138004253764458) say Meta Quest users should opt into both the Steam Link app beta and SteamVR beta to get the most up-to-date features. Beta enrollment is relevant to trying those features; neither announcement says that opting in removes a Vulkan requirement.
Wireless Steam Link and tethered USB are different paths
| Setup | Network dependency | Beta requirements stated by Valve | What the notes establish |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wireless Steam Link | Valve’s FAQ specifies a 5 GHz channel and Wi-Fi 5 minimum. | For the latest Quest features, Valve says to opt into both the Steam Link app beta and SteamVR beta. | Valve publishes these wireless requirements; the FAQ does not describe Vulkan. |
| Tethered Quest over USB | Earlier beta notes describe an initial USB streaming path that can be used without Wi-Fi. | The September 2026 Quest USB support in SteamVR beta 2.18.1 must be used with the Steam Link beta. Earlier notes specify opting into the Steam Client Beta for the initial no-Wi-Fi path. | USB is a documented streaming option, not a documented workaround for a Vulkan issue. |
Valve’s notes provide no measured comparison of latency, image quality, or stability between wireless and USB, so they do not support ranking the two on those measures.

How to troubleshoot using Valve’s published guidance
- Check the stated compatibility requirements. Confirm that the PC, GPU, headset model, headset software, and—if playing wirelessly—network meet Valve’s FAQ requirements.
- Enroll in the relevant beta channels for preview features. For the current Quest feature guidance, Valve says to opt into both the Steam Link app beta and SteamVR beta. The Quest USB support in SteamVR beta 2.18.1 specifically requires the Steam Link beta.
- Report a SteamVR beta problem to Valve. Valve directs users with beta issues to the SteamVR Bug Report forum and recommends including a system report when possible.
If the problem is specifically described as a Vulkan requirement, Valve’s public FAQ and the beta notes above do not identify the implicated build or confirm a fix. A report naming the exact SteamVR or Steam Link version and the affected setup is needed to connect that symptom to a documented change.
