Start by finding where the problem occurs: an increasing dropped-frames counter in OBS points to the broadcaster’s connection or ingest path; buffering with no OBS drops more often calls for checking the platform’s delivery, the viewer’s network, and the playback device. Blurry video, lag, and buffering can look alike, but they do not share one universal fix.

First identify who is affected

A live stream travels from the broadcaster’s encoder through an internet connection to the platform, then through distribution networks, the viewer’s home network, and the playback device. A fault at any point can appear as buffering or poor picture quality. Start with these comparisons before changing settings or buying equipment.

  • Ask whether the problem affects one viewer, several viewers, a particular region, or everyone.
  • Check whether the broadcaster’s OBS stats show dropped frames or an unstable connection.
  • For a viewer-side report, compare another stream, another device, and another network if possible.

If the broadcaster’s OBS dropped-frames counter is rising, investigate the outgoing connection and ingest. If OBS is stable while viewers buffer, focus first on playback conditions and platform delivery.

Fix dropped frames and unstable OBS ingest

OBS says it drops frames to avoid buffering and keep the stream playing. An increasing dropped-frames count usually means the connection to the streaming service is unstable or cannot sustain the configured bitrate. It is not, by itself, proof that the computer’s encoder is too weak. See the OBS Help Portal and OBS connection troubleshooting.

1. Check the connection and choose a sustainable bitrate

  1. In OBS, check the dropped-frames counter and connection indicator while streaming or during a representative test.
  2. Test upload capacity under conditions similar to the live event. Other people and devices using the connection can reduce the capacity available to OBS.
  3. Choose a bitrate that the connection can sustain reliably and that is within the target platform’s current limits. OBS describes 75% of total upload speed as a starting point, not a guarantee; actual stability, shared traffic, and platform limits still matter.
  4. If the counter keeps increasing, lower the bitrate and retest. The trade-off is reduced picture quality.

Do not set bitrate from a best-case speed-test result alone. A reliable sustained rate matters more than a brief peak, especially when the connection is shared or variable.

2. Isolate the ingest path

  • Try a different ingest server if the platform offers a choice. A route to one server may be less reliable than another.
  • Temporarily test whether a VPN, firewall or security program, or bundled network software is interfering with the connection. Change one factor at a time and restore protection after the test.
  • Use dynamic bitrate only as a mitigation if available in your OBS setup. It can reduce frame drops during congestion, but OBS cautions that it does not repair the underlying connection problem.

3. Use Ethernet when Wi-Fi instability is plausible

Test a wired Ethernet connection if the broadcaster’s Wi-Fi may be unstable and the computer supports Ethernet. This is a diagnostic as well as a possible fix; it will not correct an encoder configuration error, an ISP fault, or a platform-side problem. Check whether other household devices are consuming bandwidth, and consider router placement or interference before replacing the router.

When viewers buffer but OBS shows no dropped frames

A stable OBS counter narrows the investigation, but it does not prove that every viewer can receive and decode the stream smoothly. The issue may be limited to one audience network, region, device, or playback path. OBS’s buffering guidance recommends distinguishing broadcaster-side problems from viewer playback problems.

Ask viewers to compare playback

  • Try another live stream on the same service. If several streams buffer, the viewer’s connection, device, or the service may be involved; if only one channel has trouble, its broadcast settings or delivery may be a factor.
  • Refresh the player or close and reopen it, then compare on another supported device or network.
  • Select Auto quality when available instead of forcing a high resolution. Twitch says its Auto setting adjusts video quality to current network conditions; a manually selected high quality such as 1080p60 can perform worse on an inconsistent connection. See Twitch playback troubleshooting.

Consider transcoding and audience reach

Platforms may offer viewers different output qualities through transcoding. YouTube transcodes live streams into multiple output formats, according to its encoder guidance. Availability and behavior can vary by platform, so do not assume every service gives every viewer the same set of quality choices. Where viewers have limited bandwidth or devices, reducing the source bitrate, resolution, or frame rate can improve accessibility, but it can also reduce visual detail or motion smoothness.

Test a wired connection for suspected Wi-Fi trouble

If one viewer’s Wi-Fi seems to be the weak link, compare playback over Ethernet where supported. Google notes that an Ethernet adapter can connect a streaming device directly to a wired network and may alleviate home Wi-Fi issues; Roku recommends wired networking as more stable than Wi-Fi on supported devices. A device without an Ethernet port may need a compatible adapter. Sources: Google device support and Roku network support.

On Windows, Microsoft’s Ethernet troubleshooting guidance includes testing another cable to isolate a cable fault; a USB-to-Ethernet adapter may help when the PC has no Ethernet port. If wired playback works and Wi-Fi does not, investigate Wi-Fi placement, interference, router firmware, and competing network use. Ethernet is a test and potential remedy for wireless instability—not a fix for every kind of buffering.

Improve a blurry or blocky picture

More bitrate is not automatically the answer. If the upload connection cannot sustain it, increasing bitrate can worsen delivery; if the platform or viewer cannot use the selected format well, the extra data may not solve the visual problem. Check the encoder settings as a group:

  • Resolution and frame rate: Choose a combination the platform supports and the connection can carry consistently. Higher resolution and frame rate require more delivery capacity.
  • Bitrate: Set it for reliable upload conditions and within the platform’s current recommendations and limits.
  • Codec and keyframe interval: Use settings supported by the target platform. Recommendations are platform-specific, not universal.
  • Content motion: Test scenes with motion and audio representative of the actual show. Fast movement can expose limitations that a static test screen will not.

YouTube advises choosing a quality that produces a reliable stream for the internet connection. Its encoder guidance includes platform-specific configuration recommendations; check it before changing a live setup. Twitch documents a two-second keyframe interval in its own broadcasting guidance, but that value should not be treated as a universal rule for every platform.

Choose latency with its reliability trade-off in mind

Lower latency leaves less read-ahead buffer between the live feed and playback. That can make audience interaction feel more immediate, but it also leaves less room to absorb network variation, so viewers may see more buffering. YouTube explains this trade-off in its latency guidance.

Choose a latency mode for the event rather than defaulting to the lowest option: interaction-heavy broadcasts may benefit from lower delay, while uninterrupted playback may matter more for other streams. Test the chosen mode with the intended connection and representative content before the event. YouTube’s guidance states that the 4K/2160 option to improve for low latency is unavailable and those streams use normal latency; platform behavior and options can change, so consult the current YouTube settings and guidance when configuring a stream.

Run a representative pre-stream test

A quick test is most useful when it resembles the actual broadcast. YouTube recommends testing with motion and audio like the real show. Before going live, check:

  • OBS’s dropped-frames counter and connection indicator over a meaningful period, not just at startup.
  • The intended resolution, frame rate, bitrate, codec, and keyframe interval against the platform’s current recommendations.
  • Playback from at least one viewer device and, when practical, a separate network or region.
  • Whether the selected latency mode provides the right balance of interaction and buffering for the event.

Keep an eye on stream health after going live as well. A setup that works on an idle network may struggle when other household or office traffic increases.
