You can, however, make more eligible ad opportunities available by enabling monetization and using YouTube’s automatic mid-roll controls. YouTube reports that channels choosing automatic live mid-rolls saw an average uplift of over 20% in instream ad revenue per hour—not CPM—compared with channels that had not turned the feature on. That comparison averaged results across 207 countries in January 2024, and it is not a forecast or guarantee for an individual channel.
CPM, RPM and live ad revenue per hour are different metrics
CPM is advertiser-focused: it measures the cost advertisers pay per 1,000 ad impressions. RPM is creator-focused: it measures revenue per 1,000 views after YouTube’s revenue share and can aggregate eligible revenue sources. Live ad revenue per hour is a separate measure of advertising revenue over streaming time. A change in one metric does not automatically mean the same change in the others. Turn on live monetization and choose a mid-roll approach
Check eligibility and monetization
- In YouTube Studio, confirm your channel has the relevant YouTube Partner Program status and has accepted the Watch Page Monetization Module. Watch Page ad revenue requires these; fan-funding features have separate Commerce Product Module requirements. See YouTube’s monetization options and module requirements.
- Open the stream’s monetization controls in YouTube Studio or Live Control Room and enable monetization. With live monetization on, YouTube says pre-roll and display ads are automatically on. Ad availability and delivery are not guaranteed for every viewer or stream.
- Choose automatic, scheduled or manual mid-rolls. YouTube recommends automatic mid-rolls. The available controls can vary, so confirm the options shown for your stream in Studio.
Compare the mid-roll options

YouTube says creators who chose automatic live mid-rolls saw, on average, over 20% uplift in instream ad revenue per hour compared with channels that had not enabled the feature. Match ad breaks to the content
Choose frequency with viewer experience in mind. For manual breaks, use a pause, loading screen or transition rather than interrupting gameplay, a tournament moment, a tutorial explanation or a live conversation. YouTube’s guidance says natural breakpoints are more likely to serve than disruptive points; its detailed breakpoint advice is mainly for long-form videos, so treat it as guidance rather than a live-stream guarantee. If an important segment is underway, the Live Control Room delay option can postpone automatic mid-roll ads for 10 minutes. Manually placed breaks still display while the delay is enabled. Check the current Studio controls before relying on this during a broadcast.
Check stream format and ad suitability
YouTube’s live-streaming help currently lists horizontal streams as supporting live mid-roll and pre-roll ads, while its vertical live feed does not. Format support can change; verify the options available in Studio for the stream you are setting up. See YouTube’s live-streaming setup guidance.

Even with monetization enabled, an ad slot may not fill. YouTube’s systems decide whether to serve ads using factors intended to balance viewer experience, creator earnings and advertiser values. Advertiser suitability and age restrictions can limit monetization; follow YouTube’s channel monetization policies and its advertiser-friendly content guidance.
Measure the right result in YouTube Analytics
Use Analytics’ Live filter and compare comparable streams or time periods. Review live ad revenue per hour alongside views, monetized playbacks, CPM and RPM; these figures answer different questions. Changes in audience, viewing time, stream format, ad availability or content suitability can affect the result, so a single stream is not enough to establish that a setting raised CPM.

Super Chat, Super Stickers and memberships can diversify creator income when eligible and enabled, but they are fan-funding revenue, not advertising CPM. They require the relevant Commerce Product Module, separate from Watch Page ad monetization. YouTube describes these options in its monetization overview.
