To use a Stream Deck for live streaming, install the Stream Deck app and Elgato’s OBS Studio plugin, then drag OBS actions onto keys. You can use those keys to switch scenes, control sources, manage recording and audio, and preview scenes in Studio Mode. Check compatibility first, build a small set of clearly labeled controls, and test them in OBS before going live.
Check compatibility before setup
Elgato’s current OBS plugin page lists Windows 11 or newer or macOS 13 or newer, and Stream Deck app version 6.9 or newer. The Elgato Marketplace listing also specifies Stream Deck 6.9 or later for its OBS Studio plugin. Requirements can change, so check the current plugin listing before installing.
Connect a Stream Deck to OBS
- Install the Stream Deck app. Download the app from Elgato’s downloads page and follow its installer.
- Install the OBS Studio plugin. Find it in the Elgato Marketplace or from within the Stream Deck app. Elgato describes the plugin as free. Its official quick-start guide covers the basic flow.
- Add OBS actions to keys. In the Stream Deck app, locate the OBS actions and drag the ones you need onto keys in your layout. Choose actions for your actual scenes, sources, recording and audio controls rather than filling every key just because it is available.
- Label and distinguish the controls. Use short labels or recognizable icons so you can identify an action at a glance. For controls with consequences, such as changing a live scene or muting audio, make the key easy to distinguish from neighboring actions.
- Test the layout in OBS before broadcasting. Check each key in your actual setup, including any scene transitions, mute controls and recording actions you intend to use. Keep OBS accessible as a backup control path if a key or profile does not behave as expected.
What Stream Deck can control in OBS
Elgato lists OBS actions for scenes, sources, recording and audio. The plugin can also provide live key feedback for states such as mute and recording status. For scene changes, it supports previewing a scene in Studio Mode before pushing it live. The available actions and behavior may depend on the plugin, OBS version and configuration; check the current plugin documentation rather than assuming every action works identically in every setup.
Useful controls to consider
- Scenes: Switch to a gameplay, intermission or ending scene. If you use Studio Mode, preview a scene before taking it live.
- Sources: Toggle the sources you regularly need, such as an overlay or capture source.
- Recording: Add a recording control if you use OBS to record alongside your live show.
- Audio: Put frequently used mute or audio controls within reach, and confirm their state feedback during rehearsal.
These are examples of how to organize the documented action categories, not a guarantee that every source or control is available in every OBS setup. A Stream Deck provides configurable controls; it does not itself improve stream quality or ensure that mistakes will not happen.

Choose a device or try the workflow on mobile
Choose a layout based on how many controls you want visible at once, the space available on your desk and whether dials are useful to you. Elgato’s current profile documentation lists these key counts and layouts:

These are product specifications on Elgato’s current pages; no publication year is stated there. More keys can keep more actions visible, while a smaller layout takes less desk space. The sources do not establish one model as best for every streamer.

You do not need dedicated hardware just to try the workflow: Elgato says Stream Deck Mobile offers six keys for free, with plugin and hotkey support. It is a limited-key option, not evidence that a phone provides the same ergonomics as a physical control surface.
Use hotkeys when there is no plugin
For an application without a dedicated plugin, Elgato recommends using hotkeys for existing keyboard shortcuts; plugins provide deeper integration when available. Map only shortcuts that already work reliably in the application, then test each key with the app in the expected state. Elgato notes that profiles are specific to the operating system and Stream Deck device type, so make sure a downloaded profile matches both before importing it.
