If an OBS video stops after one play, select the Media Source, open Properties, and turn on Loop. That setting repeats the file when playback completes. Restart playback when source becomes active is different: it restarts playback when the source is visible in the current scene; it does not make the file loop.
Check the single-file Media Source settings
- Select the source: In OBS, click the video’s Media Source in the Sources list and choose Properties.
- Check the file: Confirm the file path points to the intended local video. If needed, browse to the file again.
- Enable Loop: Turn on Loop, then apply the change. OBS documents Loop as the control that plays the file again after playback completes; its documented default is Off. OBS Media Sources documentation
- Check what happens at the end: If the source disappears instead of remaining visible, inspect Show nothing when playback ends. OBS says this option automatically hides the source after completion; it is documented as On by default. Turn it off if you want the source not to be hidden when playback ends.
Test by letting the clip reach its end. If it still does not repeat, note whether it freezes on the final frame, disappears, or becomes unloaded; those symptoms point to different settings.
Understand the other playback controls
Restart playback when source becomes active
This setting restarts the file when the source is in the current scene and visible. It is useful when you want a clip to start from the beginning each time it is shown, but it does not replace Loop for uninterrupted repetition. OBS documents this option as On by default. Close file when inactive
When enabled, this option unloads the file while the source is hidden or off-scene to free memory. OBS warns that reloading it after a scene change can cause a short period when the source is not showing. If the problem occurs after switching away from the scene, test with Close file when inactive turned off. OBS Media Sources documentation

Check the video file and reproduce the failure
OBS lists video formats including MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF and WebM, and audio formats including MP3, AAC, OGG and WAV. A listed extension does not guarantee that a particular file is accessible, intact or encoded with a codec your setup can play. If the settings look right, browse to the same file again in Properties and test it. Record your OBS version, operating system, file format, relevant property states, and whether the failure occurs at end-of-file, after a scene change, or after a long inactive period.
Some older community reports describe narrower cases, not confirmed problems in current OBS releases. A Windows 10 report using OBS 25.0.8 described reopening Properties and browsing to the same file as a workaround after an inactive source had been unloaded. A Windows 11 report using OBS 30.2.0 said a one-second pause before re-showing a source allowed it to restart when a macro or websocket toggled visibility right at playback end. Use VLC Video for a playlist
If you need to repeat several files as a playlist rather than loop one local clip, OBS’s VLC Video source has a separate Loop Playlist option and visibility behavior settings. VLC must be installed; if you use 64-bit OBS, OBS documentation requires 64-bit VLC. This is a playlist option, not a necessary repair for a single Media Source file. OBS Media Sources documentation
