You can test up to three title alternatives in YouTube Studio on a computer. Open a video, choose A/B testing in its Title box, select a test type, enter the alternatives, and click Done. YouTube reports results based on watch time—not click-through rate alone—and a test may take a few days or up to two weeks.
Check whether your video is eligible
YouTube’s official help page, reviewed October 3, 2026, says the feature is available in Studio on desktop and requires advanced features to be enabled. Eligibility also depends on the video’s format, audience setting, and privacy status.
- Not eligible: Shorts, scheduled live streams, Premiere videos while they are still Premieres, Made for Kids videos, mature-audience videos, and private videos.
- Eligible after a format change: an archived live stream can be tested. A Premiere can be tested after it ends and converts to a long-form video.
YouTube warns that incorrectly failing to mark age-restricted content when using the tool can result in losing access to the feature. Check the video’s audience and age-restriction settings before starting.
Start a title test in YouTube Studio
- Open the video. For a new upload, go to Create and upload the video. For an existing upload, open Content and select it.
- Open the testing control. In the video details, click A/B testing in the Title box. You can also start a test under Thumbnail.
- Choose what to test. Select Title only, Thumbnail only, or Title and thumbnail.
- Enter up to three alternatives for the selected test, then click Done.
For a title-only test, vary the title while leaving the thumbnail out of the experiment. If you want to evaluate title-thumbnail combinations, choose that test type instead. YouTube recommends trying diverse alternatives: very similar versions may take longer to produce a clear result.

Keep the test intact while it runs
If you change the tested title or thumbnail during the run, YouTube says the test stops automatically. To test again after making a change, restart the experiment. Avoid editing either tested element until the result is available.
How long testing takes and where to see results
YouTube’s guidance is that a test can take a few days and should complete within two weeks. That is not a fixed deadline: the number of impressions, how recently the video was published, and other factors affect the timing.

Check the video’s Details page or open Analytics and select the Reach tab to review results. You can also manage an active test there. YouTube recommends starting with older videos to reduce the potential impact on overall channel views.
Read the result using YouTube’s objective
YouTube chooses a result based on watch-time performance. A higher click-through rate by itself does not establish a winner. YouTube’s stated rationale is that titles and thumbnails should help viewers understand a video and should not attract clicks that waste their time.

- Winner: YouTube found a stronger watch-time result among the tested options.
- Performed the same: the alternatives did not produce a meaningful difference in the test.
- Inconclusive: the test did not establish a clear winner. Similar alternatives or too few impressions can leave YouTube without enough evidence.
If there is no clear winner, YouTube says the first title or title-thumbnail combination submitted is shown to all viewers. You can manually change the title or thumbnail afterward. A control group may be excluded from the calculation, so the report is not necessarily based on every viewer.
Why results may differ between tests
Audience composition and real-world viewing data can change over time, so results may vary between runs. YouTube describes its native test as concurrent: viewers see variants during the same period. YouTube also says some third-party tests may run sequentially or optimize for click-through rate alone, which can produce a different result. That distinction is YouTube’s description; it is not an independent evaluation of every outside tool.
