Better livestreams start with a reliable, easy-to-follow picture and clear speech—not the most expensive camera or the highest available resolution. Set up your shot and lighting, check your microphone, choose video settings your internet connection and computer can sustain, then rehearse the complete stream before going live.

How to improve your live stream video and audio

A computer-based stream is a production chain: camera or screen capture, microphone, any needed signal conversion, encoding, and internet connection. A weak link anywhere can affect what viewers receive. Improve the parts you can control in a practical order, and test the whole setup together.

1. Compose the shot in your streaming scene

  • Position the camera so you can look toward its lens. Eye-level placement is a useful composition choice, not a technical requirement.
  • Leave intentional space above your head and remove distracting objects from the frame.
  • Check the crop in the actual OBS scene, rather than relying only on the camera’s preview. OBS lets you position and resize video sources in a scene.
  • If you use picture-in-picture, make sure the camera image or overlays do not cover important game or presentation content.
  • Use a stable camera mount or support if the image wobbles.

In OBS, a scene is the arrangement sent to the stream; sources are its individual elements, such as a webcam, capture device, or screen. Start with the sources you need and confirm that the intended camera is selected. See the OBS Quick Start Guide.

2. Make the subject visible

Look at the stream preview and check whether your face or main subject is easy to see. If a bright window or lamp behind you leaves you in silhouette, change your position or adjust the light direction, then check the preview again. Lighting depends on the room and scene; there is no single brightness or placement that suits every setup. If the available light is inadequate, an LED video light is one possible upgrade, not a prerequisite.

Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

3. Make speech easy to understand

Select the microphone you intend to use in OBS, then speak at your usual volume and distance while watching the Audio Mixer. Check that the expected meter moves. If it does not, or the wrong input is selected, choose the device manually in OBS. Turn down game or desktop audio if it masks your voice.

Before broadcasting, record a short sample and listen through headphones or another playback device if available. This can reveal hum, clipping, room echo, or an unintended microphone. An external USB microphone may help if your current input is unclear or noisy, but it is not essential. There is no universal microphone distance or meter target that fits every voice, room, and microphone.

What equipment do you need to livestream?

Begin with equipment you already have that works with your streaming device and software. Upgrade only to solve a problem you can identify in your actual setup.

Equipment When it helps What to check first
Built-in or separate webcam A separate webcam may be useful if the existing camera gives an unsuitable image or cannot be positioned well. Compare the image in your actual room, positioning options, connection support, and compatibility with your software.
Built-in or external microphone An external USB microphone is an option when your current audio is difficult to understand or picks up unwanted sound. Listen to a test in the room where you will stream; check background noise, connection simplicity, and device compatibility.
LED video light Consider one only if existing light does not illuminate the subject adequately. Recheck the preview after changing the light or your position; the right adjustment depends on the scene.
USB HDMI capture card Needed for some compatible external HDMI sources, not for a basic webcam setup. Verify that the camera supports clean output and that the capture device works with your computer and software.

A higher-spec or more expensive accessory is not automatically an improvement. Check the complete workflow—source, connection, software, and room—before buying. The B&H video streaming equipment guide describes equipment categories, but it dates from 2020 and is not current model-buying advice.

How to choose resolution, frame rate, and bitrate

Use the current guidance for the platform you are streaming to, then choose settings your upload connection and computer can sustain. OBS exposes output resolution, frame rate, and video bitrate; its guidance explains that bitrate depends on upload speed and platform limits, and that 60 fps can put more load on a system than 30 fps. YouTube likewise advises choosing a quality that produces a reliable stream on your available connection. A stable lower setting is preferable to a maximum setting that stutters or drops.

  • Resolution: Choose an output resolution that fits the image detail you need and the capacity of your connection and computer. A 4K source does not by itself guarantee a better viewer experience.
  • Frame rate: Use a rate suitable for the content and hardware. Higher frame rates can increase system load, so test rather than assuming the maximum is best.
  • Bitrate: Follow the streaming platform’s current recommendation and leave room for normal variation in your upload connection. Do not copy a number from another platform or an old example as a universal setting.
  • Connection: For YouTube Live, YouTube recommends RTMPS. This is a platform connection recommendation, not a camera setting or a universal requirement for all services.

Consult the OBS Quick Start Guide and its streaming guidelines, alongside the current requirements for your destination. Settings and platform guidance can change.

Build a simple OBS scene and rehearse the full stream

  1. Make a scene: In OBS, create a scene for the broadcast and add only the necessary sources: for example, a camera, game or presentation capture, and overlays.
  2. Confirm the inputs: Check that the correct camera appears in the intended crop. Select the intended microphone and speak while watching the Audio Mixer.
  3. Inspect the preview: Look for poor framing, hidden game or presentation details, misplaced overlays, or a subject that is hard to see.
  4. Set sustainable output: Choose resolution, frame rate, and bitrate using the platform’s current guidance and your connection and computer capacity.
  5. Run a test: Make a short recording or private test stream and review both the picture and sound before your first public broadcast.
  6. Repeat a preflight: Before each stream, check the camera, microphone, scene, connection, and stream destination.

The OBS Project’s Quick Start Guide, dated August 25, 2021, strongly encourages running a test for a few minutes before a first stream or recording. A test gives you time to catch missing sources, incorrect inputs, performance problems, and configuration errors.

Fix common livestream problems before going live

Symptom Likely cause to check What to do
The camera is missing or the wrong view appears. The intended video source is absent, selected incorrectly, or cropped or positioned unexpectedly. Check the scene’s video sources, confirm the intended camera, and inspect its placement in the OBS preview.
The microphone meter does not move. The wrong audio device is selected or the expected input is not active. Select the intended microphone manually in OBS and speak again while watching the Audio Mixer.
Speech is difficult to hear. Game or desktop sound may be masking speech, or the selected input may not be the microphone you expect. Check the selected device, reduce competing audio, and make a short recording to listen back.
The picture or sound stutters during a test. The chosen output may exceed the connection’s reliability or the computer’s capacity. Use platform guidance to choose more sustainable settings and test the entire setup again.
The subject looks dark or silhouetted. A bright background or insufficient light may be making the subject hard to see. Adjust the subject’s position or light direction, then recheck the streaming preview.
Important game or presentation content is hidden. A camera source, crop, or overlay may cover the content. Resize or reposition sources in the scene and inspect the layout again.

Or let it run in the cloud
