There is no YouTube-prescribed minimum number of VPS CPU cores or gigabytes of RAM for a 24/7 prerecorded stream. The right specification depends mainly on whether the server relays already encoded video or transcodes it, and on whether its network can sustain your chosen bitrate and monthly data use.
For simple playout, prioritize sustained outbound capacity, sufficient transfer allowance, access to your media files, and reliable process monitoring—not a large CPU allocation by default. If you transcode in real time, benchmark the exact codec, resolution, frame rate, and encoder settings on the VPS class you plan to use. No generic VPS tier can be guaranteed to work without testing your actual stream.
What VPS specs matter most for 24/7 YouTube streaming?
Work backward from the stream you want YouTube to receive. YouTube publishes ingest and encoder recommendations, but those are not VPS hardware minimums and do not guarantee network capacity or provider uptime. For an existing encoded file sent without live re-encoding, compute demand is generally a different question from the sustained upload path. Transcoding adds a workload that must be measured on the target server.
- Outbound network: Must sustain the stream’s video and audio bitrate continuously, with margin for variation and overhead.
- Transfer allowance: Must cover continuous outbound traffic under the provider’s plan terms. Check for monthly caps, throttling, and overage charges.
- CPU: Workload-dependent if video is being transcoded; do not assume a core count from YouTube.
- RAM: The cited YouTube guidance does not establish a universal minimum. Size it for the operating system, streaming process, and any additional software, then verify during a trial.
- Storage: Enough for the source library, playlist, logs, and any working copies. Calculate it from the media you intend to keep on the server.
- Operations: Reliable restart behavior, process supervision, useful logs, and a way to monitor YouTube stream health.
Choose the stream target before choosing a VPS
Set resolution and frame rate first. Higher targets generally require more bitrate and, if you encode on the VPS, more processing. YouTube’s current H.264 recommendations, checked on 2026-10-03, include these values:

| Output | YouTube-recommended H.264 bitrate |
|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 6 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 10 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 12 Mbps |
| 1440p at 30 fps | 21 Mbps |
| 1440p at 60 fps | 34 Mbps |
These are YouTube encoder recommendations, not guaranteed VPS throughput and not a provider’s monthly data allowance. YouTube lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 as accepted video codecs; do not mix bitrate figures from different codec recommendation columns. Confirm the requirements for your chosen codec and stream setup in YouTube’s live encoder settings.
Relay or transcode: the key sizing decision
Relaying already encoded media
If your software sends existing encoded media as a live stream without re-encoding it, do not automatically pay for a VPS sized for live video encoding. Focus on whether the software can read the files and sustain the outgoing stream, along with the storage and transfer terms. Test the full playback path; a file that plays locally is not proof that the VPS-to-YouTube route will remain healthy.

Transcoding on the VPS
If you resize, change frame rate, convert codecs, or otherwise encode the video in real time, CPU demand depends on the codec, output resolution, frame rate, encoder preset, and content. Benchmark those exact settings on the exact VPS class you are considering. Check whether the process can maintain real-time output without dropped frames or a growing backlog. The official YouTube materials do not prescribe a CPU or RAM tier for this workload.
Estimate network capacity and transfer needs
Your VPS needs a sustained outbound path to YouTube’s ingestion service that can carry the selected video and audio bitrate with practical headroom. A plan’s advertised port speed alone does not establish the sustained capacity to the ingestion endpoint. Test from the VPS and monitor the live stream during operation.

Continuous streaming also consumes substantial data. As a rough planning calculation, a constant 10 Mbps stream carries about 108 GB of data in a 24-hour day before additional overhead; at 12 Mbps, about 130 GB per day. Actual usage depends on the bitrate sent and overhead. These calculations do not describe any VPS provider’s included allowance: verify the transfer cap, throttling policy, and overage charges directly with the provider.
Plan storage from the media library
There is no universal storage minimum in the cited YouTube documentation. Add up the source video files needed for the playlist and account for logs and any duplicate or temporary working files your software creates. If you plan to add or replace videos while streaming, leave room for those uploads rather than filling the disk to its limit. Confirm where the streaming process expects media and logs to live, and test that files remain accessible after a restart.

Use YouTube-compatible stream settings
YouTube accepts RTMP or RTMPS ingestion and recommends RTMPS, the encrypted RTMP-over-SSL/TLS option. Its guidance recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval, with keyframes no more than four seconds apart. Verify that the playout or encoding software is actually sending the selected bitrate, codec, and keyframe cadence.
YouTube automatically transcodes an incoming live stream into output formats for viewers. You therefore do not need to provision the VPS to create every viewer rendition; size it for the stream you send to YouTube. See YouTube’s RTMPS documentation for the protocol details.

A practical VPS selection and test checklist
- Set the output target. Choose resolution, frame rate, and codec that suit the material and audience; use the corresponding YouTube recommendation as an encoder target, not as proof of VPS capacity.
- Identify the pipeline. Determine whether your setup relays existing encoded media or transcodes it. If it transcodes, benchmark the exact settings on the VPS class under consideration.
- Check network and plan terms. Confirm sustained outbound capacity, included transfer, and any throttling or overage rules with the provider. Test the route to YouTube’s ingestion service.
- Calculate storage. Total the media library and allow for logs, working files, and planned additions.
- Test before committing long-term. Run the actual playlist and stream, check audio and moving video, observe bitrate and frame rate, and test the provider’s restart and support procedures.
- Keep the process observable. Use supervision and logs so a stopped process can be diagnosed and restarted; monitor YouTube’s stream health rather than assuming a running VPS process means a healthy broadcast.
The YouTube Live API exposes stream status and health information, including bitrate and frame-rate issues. Its reference was last updated 2026-09-14 UTC; consult the Live Streams resource for the current fields and status details.
Common sizing mistakes and fixes
- Buying CPU based on a supposed YouTube minimum: YouTube does not publish a universal VPS core count. Establish whether you transcode, and benchmark if you do.
- Treating port speed as guaranteed sustained throughput: Test the real outbound path and review the provider’s limits and transfer policy.
- Ignoring monthly data limits: Estimate continuous usage from the actual bitrate, then confirm the provider’s allowance and overage or throttling terms.
- Assuming a successful start means the stream is healthy: Check the audio, moving picture, bitrate, frame rate, and YouTube stream-health information.
- Choosing a server with too little media storage: Calculate the library and working-file needs before upload; leave room for logs and updates.
- Using a keyframe interval outside YouTube’s guidance: Configure a two-second interval where possible and do not exceed four seconds.
- Leaving recovery untested: Test process restart and alerting behavior before relying on the setup for continuous operation.
Copyright, reused content, and monetization
A VPS that keeps a stream running does not grant rights to the videos or make a channel eligible for monetization. YouTube’s monetization policy says highly repetitive content with little educational value, commentary, narrative, or variation may not monetize; reused content is assessed across the channel and can be ineligible even when the creator has permission, because reused-content review is separate from copyright enforcement. Make authorship, meaningful transformation, and viewer value clear. Review YouTube’s channel monetization policies.
YPP eligibility has separate requirements and includes channel review. Under YouTube’s published eligibility guidance, livestreams that are unlisted, deleted, or not converted to VOD do not count toward its stated qualified public watch-hour threshold. Continuous runtime alone is not a shortcut to monetization. See YouTube Partner Program eligibility for current requirements.
