A YouTube Live stream that drops after a few hours has no single established cause: the timing alone does not prove a YouTube timeout or a VPS defect. Record what happened at the exact disconnect time, then compare encoder logs and YouTube’s stream-health messages with VPS network, resource, firewall, and provider events. That evidence helps distinguish an encoder or settings issue from an unstable outbound path to YouTube ingest.
Start by capturing the next disconnect
Before changing settings or moving providers, establish whether the encoder stopped sending, YouTube lost the incoming feed, or viewers merely had trouble watching. Record the same time in UTC across the systems you can inspect.
- Note the UTC timestamp, how long the stream had been live, and whether the encoder stopped, reported dropped frames, or attempted to reconnect.
- Save the encoder log lines around the event and note the matching message in YouTube Live Control Room’s stream health panel.
- Check VPS CPU, memory, outbound network graphs, firewall/security logs, and provider notices or maintenance events at that time.
- Keep a local archive or recording if available, and note whether the picture or sound was affected before the disconnect.
Do not include your stream key or other credentials in logs or support tickets. A recurring interval is useful for matching timestamps, but by itself does not identify the cause.
Use YouTube’s health messages before guessing
YouTube recommends keeping the encoder current, checking stream appearance and sound, reviewing encoder errors and CPU load, examining a local archive, and testing the strength of the outbound connection. A stream that looks healthy in the encoder can still have an outbound Internet problem. YouTube also advises distinguishing reports from one viewer, many viewers on one network, and viewers on multiple networks; those patterns point to different parts of the delivery path. See YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guidance.

In Live Control Room, use the displayed stream-health issue as a clue and compare it with the encoder log at the same time. YouTube’s documented health categories include bitrate that is too high or too low, unsupported codecs, frame-rate issues, GOP/keyframe frequency, missing or multiple audio/video streams, and mismatches between primary and backup streams. A keyframe interval above four seconds can cause buffering, but a multi-hour disconnect alone is not evidence that keyframes are the problem. The YouTube Live API health issue list describes these categories and their remediation guidance.
Check the encoder profile and sustained bitrate
Compare the encoder’s actual output profile with YouTube’s current settings guidance, rather than changing quality settings at random. YouTube supports RTMP/RTMPS, lists supported video codecs, recommends constant bitrate (CBR), and recommends a two-second keyframe frequency that must not exceed four seconds. Bitrate recommendations depend on codec, resolution, and frame rate.

These are YouTube settings-page recommendations accessed in 2026, not measurements of your VPS or proof of a root cause. Check that the VPS can sustain outbound delivery at the configured bitrate, with room for variation. A brief speed test or an advertised port speed does not establish sustained performance over a long broadcast. OBS’s 2024 connection guide offers 75% of total upload speed as a general starting point for bitrate; that is not a YouTube requirement or a VPS-specific guarantee.
For a controlled preflight, use realistic content with motion and audio and monitor stream health while it runs. YouTube’s encoder guidance is at Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

Verify the ingest URL, key, and protocol
Retrieve the current RTMPS server URL and stream key from YouTube Live Control Room and check that the VPS encoder is using those values correctly. A stale or mistyped endpoint or key can prevent a connection, although it does not by itself explain why a stream consistently drops hours later.
YouTube recommends RTMPS, the encrypted extension to RTMP. If the encoder reports an SSL error, check that it is configured for RTMPS; YouTube says port 443 can be specified if needed. For a “failed to connect to server — connection timed out” message, verify the URL and confirm that the encoder supports RTMPS. These checks address connection and protocol errors; switching protocol is not a guaranteed fix for a recurring disconnect. See YouTube’s RTMPS instructions.

Investigate the VPS-to-YouTube network path
For a VPS stream, the critical path is the encoder process on the server sending data outbound to YouTube ingest. OBS frames intermittent disconnections and dropped frames as a possible network issue between the encoder and the remote ingest server; it also lists unstable connections, bitrate beyond what the connection can sustain, firewall or security software, VPNs, network-optimization software, and hardware or network faults as possibilities. Adapt that guidance to the server rather than focusing on desktop-only hardware checks.
- Compare provider egress/network graphs and route or maintenance events with the disconnect timestamp.
- Inspect VPS firewall rules and any security, VPN, or traffic-shaping software that could affect the encoder’s outbound connection.
- Check whether the encoder reports dropped frames or fluctuating delivery before YouTube loses ingest.
- If your encoder supports another ingest server, OBS recommends testing one where available; consider this only as a controlled comparison.
- If the route, capacity, policy, or provider event appears implicated, share timestamps and relevant graphs with the VPS provider’s support team.
OBS also suggests lowering bitrate and reviewing connection settings when dropped frames or intermittent disconnections persist. Make a change only when the logs or health panel support it, so you can tell whether it helped. Its Stream Connection Troubleshooting guide is dated 2024-09-30.

Run a controlled test and change one thing at a time
- Record the current encoder settings, endpoint/protocol, and the latest failure time before making a change.
- Start a private or unlisted test using realistic audio and motion; monitor encoder logs, YouTube stream health, and VPS metrics together.
- Keep the configuration unchanged long enough to exceed the usual failure interval. A brief successful test cannot rule out a problem that appears only after several hours.
- If evidence points to a high or unstable bitrate, adjust that profile first. If it points to a URL, key, or protocol error, correct that specific setting instead.
- Repeat the test and compare the same kinds of logs and health messages. If the evidence points to the provider’s outbound path, take the timestamped records to provider support before migrating.
This is a diagnostic approach, not a fix established for every VPS or every disconnect. No specific root cause can be inferred without the encoder, YouTube, and provider records for the affected event.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is an always-on YouTube channel rather than keeping a VPS encoder configured and monitored, StreamNeo is a cloud service that loops uploaded videos to YouTube: upload a recording or make a playlist, add the YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; uploads stream as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot, and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month. To try it, start a StreamNeo account.
