For a standard video, use a 16:9 design and check YouTube’s file-size limit for the device you’ll use to upload.
Set up the right thumbnail canvas
- Open Canva’s YouTube Thumbnail maker and search for or select the “YouTube Thumbnail” design type.
- Choose a template, or start with a blank thumbnail canvas. Canva describes this format as 16:9.
For a standard video thumbnail, YouTube recommends 3840 × 2160 pixels and requires a minimum width of 640 pixels. YouTube’s maximum file size depends on upload device: 2 MB for a video thumbnail uploaded on mobile and 50 MB on desktop. Canva’s page gives 1280 × 720 pixels and 2 MB as general guidance; use YouTube’s current device-specific rules when checking your exported file.
Design a clear thumbnail
Make it readable at small sizes
Replace the template’s wording and images with material that accurately represents the video. Keep the composition simple and make important text large enough to read when the thumbnail appears small. YouTube advises against overly complex designs and states: “90% of the best-performing videos have custom thumbnails.” That is YouTube Help guidance, not evidence that a custom thumbnail alone causes a video to perform better.
Choose images and text that match the video
Use a frame, image, or graphic that helps viewers recognize the subject without implying content the video does not contain. Keep the main subject and key words prominent; avoid crowding the canvas with details that disappear at smaller display sizes.

Download the image from Canva
- In Canva, select the download or export control.
- Choose JPG or PNG. Canva describes JPEG as a smaller-file option and PNG as a high-quality option.
- Download the file and check its dimensions and file size before uploading. If it exceeds the limit for your upload device, export a smaller file or use the other format and check again.
Upload a standard video thumbnail in YouTube Studio
- Open YouTube Studio and select Content.
- Open the video you want to edit.
- Choose the thumbnail upload control, select the image you downloaded from Canva, and save your changes.
You need a verified YouTube account to upload a custom thumbnail, and the image must comply with YouTube’s Community Guidelines. YouTube notes that a thumbnail change can take time to appear.
Standard video thumbnails and Shorts are different

These are distinct workflows: do not use a standard video’s 16:9 canvas for a Short if you are designing specifically for its recommended 9:16 thumbnail format.

Common problems and fixes
- The image is rejected for being too large: Check whether you are uploading from mobile or desktop; the stated limits differ. Export a smaller JPG or reduce the image dimensions, then check the resulting file size.
- The thumbnail looks cramped or hard to read: Remove secondary elements, enlarge the most important wording, and make the subject more prominent.
- The custom thumbnail option is unavailable: Confirm that the account is verified and that you are editing the intended video in YouTube Studio.
- The new thumbnail is not visible yet: YouTube says changes can take time to appear, so allow time for the update to show.
- You are editing a Short: Use the 9:16 recommendation and YouTube Studio on a computer for the custom thumbnail upload described in its current Help page.
