Then inspect the platform preview and protect your stream key. This checklist is designed for gaming streams and other live broadcasts; platform rules and controls differ, so verify the current requirements for the service you use.
1. Confirm your account is eligible to stream
Check eligibility before configuring your scene or announcing a broadcast. Requirements are platform-specific; do not assume that a rule for YouTube also applies to Twitch.
- YouTube: Make sure live streaming is enabled, the channel is verified, and the channel has not had a live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. YouTube’s current eligibility guidance sets a minimum age of 16 and includes special provisions for younger participants; check the applicable rules directly, especially when minors are involved. YouTube Help: Get started with live streaming.
- Twitch or another service: Check that platform’s current help pages for account permissions, age requirements, and restrictions. These details can change and are not interchangeable with YouTube’s.
If the account cannot start a live broadcast, resolve that before relying on a last-minute test.
2. Confirm the event and where it will appear
Open the scheduled event or stream setup and verify the details viewers will see. A correctly configured encoder can still send video to the wrong event or account.

- Check the title, category or game, scheduled time, and visibility setting.
- Confirm the encoder is signed in to the intended account and selected destination.
- Open the channel or event page to make sure the stream is accessible to the intended audience. Check it on a phone as well as a desktop if mobile viewing matters.
- For a planned production, know what you will do if the connection drops and whether you need a local recording as a backup.
YouTube recommends confirming event accessibility and checking mobile access as part of its live-streaming guidance: YouTube Help: live-streaming tips.
3. Choose a setup and settings your connection can sustain
Use the simplest streaming route that provides what the show needs. A mobile broadcast can suit a quick update; a webcam workflow may be enough for a face-to-camera stream; an encoder is useful for gameplay, overlays, screen sharing, or multiple sources. YouTube outlines mobile, webcam, and encoder workflows in its live-streaming setup guide.

Check upload capacity before raising quality
Measure upload speed under conditions close to the broadcast, and account for other devices or applications using the connection. Twitch’s general guidance is to have upload speed at least 30% above the chosen stream bitrate; its example says a 6 Mbps stream may need at least 8 Mbps upload. Treat this as general guidance, not a guarantee: available bandwidth can vary, and Twitch’s recommendation does not establish a universal setting for every platform or network. YouTube likewise advises choosing settings reliable for the available connection.
If the stream stutters in rehearsal, reduce bitrate or resolution before going public rather than choosing ambitious settings that the connection cannot hold. Follow the current encoder and platform recommendations for your selected resolution and frame rate; exact settings depend on the service and setup.

Do not buy equipment before identifying a problem
A camera and microphone are not universal prerequisites. Twitch says they are not required, and YouTube notes that expensive equipment is unnecessary to get started. Use the devices you already have for a test. If speech is unclear in the recording, an optional USB microphone may be a sensible upgrade; if the network is unstable, diagnose the connection first rather than assuming new hardware is the answer.
4. Connect the encoder safely
For an encoder workflow, verify the account, event, and stream key before rehearsal. A stream key authorizes an encoder to broadcast to the associated account. Twitch Help warns: “Never share your stream key with anyone. Don’t show your stream key on stream!” Keep it out of screenshots, overlays, and demonstrations. If a Twitch key may have been exposed, reset it from Twitch’s stream settings. See Twitch Help’s Stream Key FAQ.

- Check that the encoder is connected to the account and event you intend to use.
- Keep the key private and avoid pasting it into public messages or visible notes.
- If you suspect exposure, reset the key using the platform’s current controls, then update the encoder.
5. Rehearse with the real content
Run a short test before the event, using the audio, movement, game, and scene changes you plan to broadcast. A static test screen will not reveal every problem in a moving game or a live microphone mix. YouTube recommends trying a test live stream and testing encoder audio and movement; OBS also advises testing before the first stream. Use an unlisted or private event where supported, or make a local recording if a live test is not appropriate.
- Start the test using the same encoder, destination, scenes, and settings you expect to use.
- Speak at your usual distance and volume; include game or desktop audio and any alerts or other sources planned for the show.
- Move through representative gameplay or scene changes instead of checking only a still image.
- Watch the platform preview and, if possible, review the resulting recording from a viewer’s perspective.
- Correct problems and repeat the short test until the stream is clear and stable.
OBS’s Quick Start Guide recommends a test stream rather than jumping directly into the first broadcast.

6. Inspect picture, sound, and privacy before going live
Picture and framing
In YouTube’s Live Control Room, check the encoder preview before starting. Make sure the intended camera, game, or screen capture is visible and framed legibly. Close or hide unrelated windows, notifications, account details, messages, and other personal information that should not be broadcast.
Audio mix
Listen to the rehearsal rather than trusting the meters alone. Speech should be intelligible, and the microphone, game or desktop sound, and other intended sources should be present and balanced. Review a recording for clarity and synchronization; OBS’s default setup captures desktop audio and a microphone, but your own configuration still needs checking. Twitch Creator Camp also recommends reviewing recordings for clear, balanced audio in sync with video: Twitch Creator Camp: audio basics.
Event visibility and viewer access
Verify the actual event page, not only the local encoder scene. Confirm the event is visible to the audience you intend and that its preview looks right on mobile when relevant. For a production that depends on a backup or local archive, confirm the fallback and recording behavior in advance; do not assume a file is usable until you have checked it.
7. Troubleshoot the test before the audience arrives
| Symptom | Likely check | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Encoder will not connect or the event shows no incoming video | Wrong account, event, destination, or stream key | Confirm the encoder account and selected event. Re-enter the correct key privately; if a Twitch key may have been exposed, reset it in Twitch stream settings and update the encoder. |
| Video buffers or stutters | Upload capacity is insufficient or being shared | Check upload speed and competing network use. Reduce bitrate or resolution and rehearse again; prioritize a stable signal over higher settings. |
| Viewers may not hear speech, game sound, or both | Source selection, mute state, or balance in the audio mix | Record or test the full mix, check each intended source, and listen back for intelligibility and synchronization. |
| Preview shows the wrong scene or private information | Incorrect capture, scene, window, or notifications | Select the intended source, hide unrelated windows and alerts, and inspect the preview again before starting. |
| The event is missing or inaccessible to intended viewers | Visibility, schedule, event selection, or channel access | Check the event settings and open the event page from the channel and a mobile device where appropriate. |
Once live, keep monitoring audio and video. YouTube recommends continuous quality monitoring; Twitch points creators to stream-health and Inspector tools when a broadcast stutters or buffers. Twitch’s relevant guidance is available at Twitch Help: broadcasting guidelines.
