The simplest route is the LiveSplit One OBS plugin: install the release for your operating system, add LiveSplit One from OBS’s Sources dock, then choose your split file and layout in the source properties. If that plugin does not suit your system, OpenSpeedRun can provide timer data to OBS through a local WebSocket overlay and a Browser source.
Choose how the timer will enter OBS

OBS supports plugins that add sources and other features, but a plugin’s compatibility can depend on your operating system, computer architecture, and OBS version. Check the release notes and installation instructions for your exact setup before installing one: OBS Project’s Plugins Guide.
Add the LiveSplit One source
- Check compatibility. Confirm the plugin release matches your operating system and architecture, and supports the OBS version you have installed.
- Install the plugin for your system. Follow the project’s OS-specific instructions in the LiveSplit One OBS plugin README. The README includes instructions for Windows, Linux, Flatpak, and macOS.
- Add the source. Open the OBS scene where you want the timer, click the + in the Sources dock, and select LiveSplit One.
- Choose the run and presentation. Open the source properties and select the run’s split file and the layout you want displayed.
- Position and size it. Place the timer where it is readable without covering important gameplay. Check the full scene, not just the source preview, before going live or recording.
- Set controls if needed. Open Settings → Hotkeys in OBS and assign actions for the LiveSplit One source if you want to control it from the keyboard.
The plugin source’s properties are where you choose the split file and layout. If you add multiple LiveSplit One sources, they can share split state while using different layouts, as described in the project README.
Use OpenSpeedRun with an OBS Browser source
OpenSpeedRun’s overlay server is off by default. You must enable it before OBS can connect to its local WebSocket endpoint.

- Install and open OpenSpeedRun using the instructions in its project README.
- In OpenSpeedRun’s configuration, enable OBS overlay server.
- Use the local WebSocket endpoint provided by the application or its documentation as the address for an OBS Browser source. The repository also includes a ready-made overlay example.
- Add a Browser source in the OBS scene, connect it to the overlay, and arrange it so the timer remains legible over the game.
The OpenSpeedRun repository describes releases for Windows, Linux, and macOS, but notes that macOS is currently untested. Check the current project instructions for platform-specific details before relying on that build.
Check the scene before a run
- Confirm the timer is visible at the size and position you intend to use.
- Make sure the overlay does not obscure gameplay information viewers need to see.
- For a plugin, verify the correct split file and layout are selected in its source properties.
- For OpenSpeedRun, confirm the overlay server is enabled and the Browser source uses its local endpoint.
Troubleshoot common setup problems
The LiveSplit One source does not appear in OBS
Check that you installed the release matching your operating system and architecture, and that the plugin supports your OBS version. Plugin compatibility is not universal; consult the OBS Project’s plugin guidance and the plugin README.

The timer or splits are not the ones you expect
Open the LiveSplit One source properties and verify the selected split file and layout. If using more than one source, check each source’s layout selection.
Keyboard controls do nothing
Open OBS Settings → Hotkeys and check whether actions for the LiveSplit One source have been assigned.

The OpenSpeedRun Browser source cannot show the overlay
First confirm that OBS overlay server is enabled in OpenSpeedRun; it is off by default. Then check that the Browser source is pointed at the local WebSocket endpoint described by the project. For platform-specific installation or endpoint details, consult the OpenSpeedRun README.
