To add AI dubbing to a live stream, capture the speaker’s audio, send it continuously to a translation system for each target language, then route the returned translated speech to viewers as an audio track or listening option. Translated captions alone are not dubbing: a complete setup must generate and deliver spoken translated audio as well as, optionally, subtitles.
Choose the output your audience needs
- Spoken translation: viewers hear a generated voice speaking in another language. This requires translated audio and a route to play or publish it.
- Translated captions: viewers read translated text while hearing the original audio. This is simpler in some broadcast systems, but it is not voice dubbing.
- Both: provide translated audio and captions, with a clear way for viewers to choose the original, a target language, subtitles, mute, and volume where your player supports those controls.
A caption plugin may help with transcription and translated text, but it does not necessarily create or route a finished translated voice track.

Build a custom dubbing pipeline
1. Capture a clean source track
Send the streamer’s microphone or an isolated program audio track to the translation system. For conversations, preserve separate speaker tracks when possible; a single mixed feed makes it harder to keep speaker identity distinct and to handle overlapping speech. If you need capture hardware, use a microphone you already have if it provides clear speech; this workflow does not require buying a particular model.
2. Choose transport for where the audio lives
Use WebRTC when a browser captures and plays media. Use WebSockets when a server or media worker already receives raw audio. OpenAI’s Realtime translation documentation describes continuously streaming source audio and receiving translated audio plus transcript deltas; transport selection does not remove the need to build the rest of the routing and playback system.

3. Create a session for each target language
Plan a distinct translation session for every target language. A server-side media worker can subscribe to the source track, send it to the appropriate session, and republish each returned translated track. Keep source speakers separate where possible, and provide a path back to original audio.
4. Publish the audio and optional captions
Connect translated audio to the broadcast or player architecture you use; the translation API does not automatically make its output available to viewers. Decide whether viewers receive separate language tracks or a player-side listening path, and add captions independently if desired. Test switching between original and translated audio, volume balance, and caption readability in the actual player.

5. Check platform latency and caption constraints
YouTube Live’s API supports normal, low, and ultraLow latency preferences. Its documentation says ultra-low latency does not support closed captions or resolutions above 1080p. If translated captions are required, verify the chosen mode with the platform and player rather than assuming they will work in ultra-low mode.
Google Cloud says synchronizing captions with audio reduces audio/text timing mismatch while increasing overall end-to-end media latency. Measure the complete path—capture, translation, buffering, publishing, and viewer playback—rather than treating a model or transport characteristic as the stream’s total delay.

6. Treat WHIP as transport, not translation
OBS’s WHIP Streaming Guide documents broadcasting through WebRTC using a provider URL and bearer token. It describes WHIP as a sub-second-latency protocol and notes simulcast availability in OBS 32.1.0 and newer. WHIP does not add AI translation: translated output still has to be integrated into the stream. The guide also says WHIP is not supported in the Ubuntu 24.04 PPA release of OBS.
Test before taking the stream live
- Have bilingual reviewers assess each source-to-target language pair using representative material.
- Include proper names, numbers, dates, specialist vocabulary, code-switching, accents, fast speech, background music or noise, and overlapping speakers.
- Measure first translated-audio delay, delay after an utterance ends, caption timing, and reconnect behavior separately from translation quality.
- Check voice consistency, the intelligibility of both original and translated audio, sensible volume levels, and caption readability.
- Test the actual broadcast and playback route, including language switching and what viewers hear if translation or connectivity is interrupted.
Troubleshoot common problems
Viewers see translated text but hear no translated voice
The system may be producing captions only, or translated audio may not be connected to the player or broadcast. Confirm that the selected route generates spoken audio and that the returned audio track is published and selectable.

Translation arrives too late for conversation
Delay can accumulate across capture, translation, buffering, broadcast distribution, and playback. Measure each stage; then test a lower-buffering route or a less aggressive synchronization setting if captions are enabled. A hosted event workflow may intentionally accept a longer delay: Clevercast reports 60–120 seconds for its described workflow, which may fit an event better than interactive conversation.
Captions are missing in YouTube ultra-low mode
YouTube’s API documentation says ultra-low latency does not support closed captions. Test a supported latency preference for the caption experience you need, or decide whether spoken translation without captions better fits the mode.

Names, numbers, or overlapping speech are wrong
Review those cases with bilingual listeners during preflight. Preserve separate speaker tracks where possible, and test domain-specific terms and realistic overlapping speech before broadcast; a clean, single-speaker sample is not enough to establish quality for a full stream.
The setup streams, but translation does not appear
Check each target-language session, audio subscription, returned track, and publishing route independently. WHIP or another streaming transport can carry media, but does not perform translation itself.
