Simulcasting sends one live program to more than one platform at the same time. You can send separate outputs from your streaming encoder to each destination, or send one output to a relay service that forwards it. Before choosing, check YouTube live access, destination account rules, stream credentials and upload capacity; if Twitch is one of the destinations, its simulcasting conditions also shape what viewers may see and how you promote the broadcast.
Choose how to send the stream to each platform
There are two common routes. Neither is best for every setup: consider how many destinations you need, whether your encoder supports multiple outputs, your internet upload capacity, local computer load, service costs and how you will monitor each destination.
Send encoder outputs directly
Configure your streaming encoder with the connection details for each platform. YouTube’s setup guidance covers choosing an encoding method and configuring an encoder for a live event. The exact controls depend on the encoder and destination; use each platform’s current instructions for its connection method and credentials. This route puts the destination connections on your streaming computer and network.
Send one output to a relay
A relay receives your encoder’s stream and forwards it to configured destinations. Cloudflare documents forwarding a live stream to third-party platforms using each destination’s URL and stream key. Restream documents a workflow for sending OBS to Twitch and YouTube. These sources describe workflows, not a universal performance or cost advantage over direct outputs.

Use the route that fits your encoder, connection and destination count. YouTube’s guidance stresses that sufficient upload speed is critical for high-quality simulstreaming, but it does not give a universal Mbps threshold for every configuration. A wired Ethernet connection can be a practical option, but it cannot increase the bandwidth supplied by your internet service.
Check account access and destination rules
YouTube readiness
Your YouTube channel must be verified and live streaming enabled. If you have never streamed live before, YouTube says first-time activation can take at least 24 hours after you request it. Confirm this well before a scheduled broadcast. You will need the appropriate stream key and RTMP server URL if your chosen encoder requires them. Other destinations and stream credentials
Confirm that each destination account is active, in good standing and enabled for live streaming. Follow that service’s current connection instructions: some workflows use an account integration, while others ask you to enter a server URL and stream key. Treat stream keys as private credentials; anyone who obtains a key may be able to use it to authorize a stream. Do not paste a key into a public chat, overlay or recording.
Twitch’s simulcasting conditions
If you stream to Twitch at the same time as other platforms, Twitch’s current Terms of Service require that the Twitch viewer experience be at least as good as the experience elsewhere; that you do not direct your Twitch community to leave for the concurrent stream; and that you do not use third-party tools to combine cross-platform activity on the Twitch stream, such as merged chat. Twitch’s FAQ gives examples: making Twitch video quality worse than elsewhere can degrade the experience; links to other social profiles, including streaming-platform profiles, may appear in channel information, but actively promoting or directing viewers to the concurrent livestream through Twitch banners, titles, go-live notices, chat commands or similar means is not allowed under the FAQ’s explanation. Personal-use tools that combine activity are allowed when that combined activity is not displayed on the Twitch simulcast. Set up a simulcast step by step
- Request YouTube live access early. Verify the channel and enable live streaming. A first-time activation may take at least 24 hours after the request, according to YouTube.
- Check every destination account. Make sure each service permits your account to go live and read its current live-streaming guidance, especially if you plan to use Twitch.
- Choose your delivery route. Decide whether your encoder will connect to each destination directly or send one stream to a relay that forwards it.
- Collect the connection details. Add destinations through supported integrations where available; otherwise enter each destination’s server URL and stream key as required. Keep keys confidential.
- Check upload capacity for the whole setup. YouTube says sufficient upload speed is critical. The reviewed YouTube guidance does not establish one Mbps figure suitable for all resolutions, bitrates and delivery routes, so use the settings and capacity requirements applicable to your configuration rather than relying on a generic number.
- Test the complete path before an important broadcast. Confirm that each destination receives the stream, and check video, audio and status separately. A successful encoder connection alone does not establish that every platform is receiving correctly.
- Keep Twitch’s viewer experience compliant. If Twitch is a destination, avoid lower quality there than on other services, do not direct Twitch viewers to the concurrent broadcast, and keep merged cross-platform chat or activity off the Twitch simulcast unless current Twitch guidance permits the exact implementation.
- Monitor destinations while live. Watch each platform’s status and verify that audio and video remain correct across the destinations.
