SRT vs. RTMP: Which Streaming Protocol Should You Use?

Choose SRT for supported workflows that need packet-loss recovery across unpredictable networks; use RTMP when the destination or workflow requires it. Compatibility comes first.

Use SRT when both ends of your live-video workflow support it and you need a transport designed to recover from packet loss and jitter on an unpredictable network. Use RTMP when the platform, encoder, or established workflow requires RTMP. Compatibility comes first: a protocol cannot help if the receiving endpoint does not accept it.

What SRT and RTMP do

SRT (Secure Reliable Transport) and RTMP are protocols for moving live video between systems. They are not video formats or streaming platforms. Your encoder sends a stream using a protocol, and an ingest service or receiving device must accept that protocol.

Haivision describes SRT as an open-source transport technology designed to optimize live streaming across unpredictable networks, including the Internet. It runs over UDP and adds mechanisms such as acknowledgments and retransmission (ARQ), latency management, and encryption. The SRT project also documents forward error correction (FEC), connection bonding, and Stream ID; whether a feature is usable depends on the implementation and its configuration. Haivision’s SRT overview and the SRT project documentation describe these capabilities.

RTMP remains relevant when a destination or existing workflow expects it. The available comparison material does not establish a neutral, equivalent feature-by-feature test of RTMP against SRT, so it would be misleading to claim that one is universally faster, more reliable, or more secure.

  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Choose by endpoint support first

Before comparing network behavior, check the exact sending and receiving products. Confirm the protocol supported by your encoder or software and by the specific ingest service you intend to use. A platform’s general support for live streaming does not necessarily mean its ingest accepts SRT.

  • Choose SRT if both endpoints support it and the contribution path has variable bandwidth, jitter, or packet loss that you need the transport to help manage.
  • Choose RTMP if the destination or an established encoder-to-platform workflow requires RTMP.
  • Keep the current protocol if the link is stable and the workflow is working; changing protocols alone does not guarantee a visible improvement.

How the trade-offs differ

Decision SRT RTMP
Unpredictable network conditions Designed to compensate for jitter and bandwidth fluctuations and recover from typical Internet packet loss. The available sources do not establish an equally detailed, sourced comparison of its behavior under loss and jitter.
Recovery and delay Uses a configurable buffer window to allow packet reordering or retransmission. Recovery therefore has a latency cost. No comparable verified numeric buffer value is established by the available sources.
Encryption Encryption is documented as a protocol capability; confirm that the specific products enable and configure it. The available sources do not substantiate comparable security variants or implementation details.
Compatibility Both source and destination must support SRT. Stream ID can help route multiple SRT ingest streams to one address and port in supported workflows. Use it when the receiving platform or existing workflow calls for RTMP.

These are distinctions supported by the protocol documentation, not a controlled head-to-head test. The IETF Datatracker record for “The SRT Protocol” is an archived, expired individual Internet-Draft from 2021, not an IETF standard or an endorsement by the IETF.

Set SRT latency for the link, not by guesswork

SRT latency is the recovery buffer, not the entire contribution-to-viewer delay. The full path can include encoding, network travel, ingest, processing, and playback buffering. A low SRT buffer may reduce the time available to recover packets; a larger buffer can allow more recovery time but adds delay.

Haivision’s SRT Protocol 1.5.4 documentation, last updated February 12, 2026, describes a configurable latency value from 20 to 8000 ms. It advises setting the value to match link characteristics. For a “fairly good network” with 0.1 to 0.2% loss and no significant burst loss, its rule of thumb is four times the round-trip time (RTT): SRT Latency = RTT Multiplier * RTT. The higher configured source or destination value is used. This is version-specific vendor guidance for the stated conditions, not a universal guarantee or an estimate of typical Internet loss. See Haivision’s SRT 1.5.4 latency guidance.

  1. Measure or observe RTT and packet loss on the actual contribution path, including whether loss arrives in bursts.
  2. Use the latency guidance supported by your SRT software or device, and account for both source and destination settings.
  3. Test the stream under representative network conditions. Check for late or missing packets, interruptions, and end-to-end delay rather than optimizing one setting in isolation.
  4. Recheck the documentation for your implementation’s version; settings and available features can differ between products and releases.

Verify implementation details before deployment

  • Confirm that the exact encoder, decoder, gateway, and platform ingest endpoint support the same protocol and required modes.
  • Check which SRT features are implemented and enabled. Documentation of ARQ, FEC, bonding, Stream ID, or encryption does not mean every product uses all of them.
  • If security matters, verify encryption settings at both endpoints and confirm that the intended connection is actually encrypted; a protocol feature is not proof of configuration.
  • For multi-destination or multi-stream workflows, check how the receiver uses addresses, ports, and Stream ID rather than assuming routing behavior is universal.
  • For professional contribution workflows, an SRT-capable encoder or gateway may be an option, but hardware is not inherently required to choose a protocol. Verify the exact model’s features and current availability before buying.

Common problems and what to check

The SRT stream will not connect

First check protocol support on both endpoints. Then verify the destination address, port, connection mode, and any required Stream ID against the receiver’s instructions. A mismatch or unsupported ingest protocol cannot be fixed by changing latency.

The stream stutters or drops packets

Check the actual path for bandwidth variation, loss, and burst loss. If the SRT recovery window is too short for conditions on that link, packets may arrive too late to be recovered. Adjust latency in line with the endpoint documentation, then test again; also rule out congestion or a receiver-side limitation.

The stream is stable but arrives too late

Review the SRT buffer and the rest of the signal path separately. Lowering the buffer may reduce SRT’s recovery opportunity, while encoding, platform processing, and playback buffering can still contribute delay. Measure end-to-end behavior before deciding which setting to change.

Encryption appears unavailable

Check the product’s implementation and configuration rather than relying on protocol-level capability alone. Both endpoints must support the intended encryption behavior, and it must be configured as required.

The platform offers only RTMP ingest

Use RTMP for that destination unless the platform provides another supported ingest option. An SRT-capable encoder does not make an RTMP-only receiver accept SRT; a protocol conversion gateway is a separate workflow that must be supported and configured.

Where a 24/7 YouTube stream fits

SRT and RTMP concern transport between endpoints; they do not by themselves keep a pre-recorded channel live around the clock. For an always-on YouTube stream made from uploaded videos, StreamNeo is the cloud option to try first: it loops uploaded video without keeping a computer running, supports any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and offers a free first day.

Or let it run in the cloud

  1. Upload a recording or build a playlist.
  2. Add your YouTube stream key once.
  3. Go live; StreamNeo loops the uploaded videos from the cloud.

Your computer and home connection do not need to stay on. Uploaded video streams as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot. StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card; after that, the Monthly price is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for YouTube and uploaded videos, not camera-based live production. Start your free first day with StreamNeo.
