How to Live Stream on Facebook and YouTube at the Same Time

Send one OBS feed through a hosted relay to reach Facebook and YouTube, or configure separate direct outputs. Here’s how to prepare accounts, credentials, settings, and event controls.

To broadcast one live production on Facebook and YouTube at once, the simplest setup is usually a hosted multistreaming service: connect both destinations to the service, then send it one stream from OBS or another encoder. The service forwards that feed to both platforms. A direct multi-output encoder can also send separate feeds to both, but its setup depends on the encoder and each platform’s current ingest instructions.

Choose how to send your stream to both platforms

For a gaming broadcast, you can capture and mix gameplay, microphone, and other audio in OBS, then either send one feed to a hosted relay or configure an encoder that supports multiple outputs. These approaches differ mainly in where distribution happens and what you have to configure.

Method How it works Best fit What to check
Hosted relay service Connect Facebook and YouTube to the service. Send one encoder feed to it, or use its browser-based studio; the service forwards the stream to each destination. You want one encoder connection and a guided way to manage destinations. Current destination support, supported Facebook account types, plan limits, branding, latency, account permissions, reliability, and whether the service starts each event automatically.
Direct multi-output encoder Configure the encoder to send a separate feed to each platform’s ingest endpoint. Your existing production setup supports multiple outputs and you can manage each destination’s settings. Encoder capability, combined upload bandwidth, destination-specific settings, separate event controls, and what happens if one output fails.

A relay generally means one feed leaves your connection; the service handles distribution. With direct outputs, your own setup sends each destination feed, so budget for their combined outgoing rates. The sources cited here do not establish one universal direct Facebook-and-YouTube configuration, so confirm the encoder and Facebook instructions for your account before relying on that route.

Check channel access and live-stream eligibility first

  • YouTube: The channel must be verified and live streaming enabled. YouTube says first-time enablement can take up to 24 hours, so do not leave it until the event is about to start.
  • Facebook: Make sure you can access the profile, Page, or Group you intend to use, and that the chosen relay or encoder workflow supports that destination. Available choices depend on current service features and account permissions.
  • Stream credentials: Depending on the workflow, you may need a platform’s stream URL and key, or the relay’s own key. Treat every key as private; it identifies where an incoming stream is sent.
  • Network: YouTube identifies sufficient upload speed as critical for successful high-quality simulcasting. Test the connection under realistic conditions and leave headroom rather than assuming a universal Mbps threshold.

Set up OBS with a hosted relay

  1. Prepare the YouTube channel. Verify the channel and enable live streaming ahead of time. Allow up to 24 hours for first-time enablement.
  2. Connect both destinations in the relay. Sign in to the relay and authorize Facebook and YouTube. Select the intended Facebook profile, Page, or Group and the YouTube channel or event where those options are available. Review the requested account permissions.
  3. Create the relay stream. Choose its encoder or RTMP workflow and copy the stream key it provides. In OBS, open Settings → Stream, select the relay service if it appears in the service list, and enter the supplied key. If the relay gives you a custom server URL, use the relay’s instructions for entering it; do not substitute a platform key for the relay key.
  4. Prepare the production in OBS. Select the game capture or display capture, microphone, and other audio sources you need. Check that the game and microphone are both present in the audio mixer, and that the preview shows the intended scene.
  5. Enable the destinations for this event. In the relay dashboard, confirm that both Facebook and YouTube are selected. Add or check the event title and description where the service provides those fields.
  6. Start and verify the broadcast. Start streaming from OBS, then check the relay dashboard and each platform’s preview or event state. The required final go-live action can vary by integration; use the controls shown for your event rather than assuming that starting OBS automatically publishes both broadcasts.
  7. Rehearse and end deliberately. If the workflow permits, run a private or unlisted rehearsal. Check picture, audio, both destination previews, and your chat-monitoring plan. Confirm how the chosen integration ends the event, and verify that both broadcasts have stopped when you finish.

Restream’s published guide describes an OBS workflow using its service and supplied key. It also says its free plan supports two simultaneous channels and Facebook profile streaming, while Pages and Groups require its Standard plan. Those are vendor-stated plan and eligibility details that can change; check Restream’s current plan terms and destination support before choosing it.

Set up a direct multi-output encoder

With direct output, the encoder needs the current ingest details for each destination, not a hosted relay key. YouTube’s documented process is to obtain the stream URL and key in YouTube Studio, enter them in the encoder, start sending the stream, and use Live Control Room controls where required.

  1. Get YouTube’s ingest details. In YouTube Studio, open the live-stream setup for the event and retrieve its stream URL and key. Enter them in the encoder’s YouTube output.
  2. Get Facebook’s current ingest details. Follow Facebook’s Live Producer instructions for the target account and event, then enter the current Facebook endpoint and credentials in the encoder’s separate output. The exact Facebook menu labels, credential behavior, and start sequence are account- and interface-dependent; verify them in Facebook’s current instructions.
  3. Configure both outputs. Check that the encoder supports simultaneous outputs and that each is assigned to the intended destination. Set event information and confirm any platform-side preview or start controls required by the workflow.
  4. Check outgoing capacity and failure handling. Direct outputs use bandwidth for each destination feed. Confirm the encoder can sustain the combined rate and determine how it reports or recovers from an output failure.
  5. Start, verify, and stop each event as required. Start the encoder outputs and check both platform states. Follow each destination’s controls to go live and end the broadcast; do not assume one platform’s event control closes the other.

Do not copy stream keys into public chat, screenshots, or a public scene. If a key is exposed, use the platform’s credential controls to replace it before the next broadcast.

Encoder settings and upload bandwidth

YouTube’s surfaced encoder guidance recommends H.264 video, constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval, and RTMPS for encrypted delivery to Google’s servers. YouTube says the keyframe interval should not exceed four seconds. These are YouTube recommendations, not a universal specification for Facebook; check the relay’s current requirements for its outgoing feeds and Facebook’s current guidance for direct delivery.

  • Codec: H.264 is listed by YouTube as a supported video codec.
  • Rate control: Use CBR for YouTube’s recommended bitrate encoding mode.
  • Keyframes: Set a two-second interval for YouTube, without exceeding four seconds.
  • Transport: YouTube recommends RTMPS to encrypt data in transit to Google’s servers.
  • Upload planning: There is no single upload-speed figure established here for every resolution, bitrate, relay, and direct-output combination. For direct outputs, account for the combined rates; with a relay, your connection sends one feed to the relay. Test the actual setup with stability headroom.

Gaming broadcast checks before you go live

  • Listen to the game, microphone, and any music in the preview; make sure one source is not overwhelming the others.
  • Check that the captured game is visible and that alerts or overlays do not cover important gameplay.
  • Decide how you will monitor chat across both destinations. A relay or encoder does not necessarily combine chats.
  • Run a rehearsal when possible and verify both platform previews, not just the encoder preview.
  • Use gameplay, music, and other material you have permission to broadcast. A multistream relay does not grant rights to copyrighted music, footage, or other content.

Copyright, reused content, and platform rules

Streaming to two platforms does not change the rights you need for the content in your broadcast. Use game audio and other material in accordance with the relevant rights and platform rules; in particular, do not assume that a game’s soundtrack is cleared for streaming just because the game itself is being played. Check the game publisher’s streaming policy and the platforms’ current copyright rules, especially if you include music, trailers, or third-party video.

Keep the stream meaningfully your own production. Simply retransmitting prerecorded or third-party material can create copyright or monetization problems; permission to use material and eligibility for monetization are separate questions. Review the platforms’ current rules for the channel and content in question.

Common problems and fixes

Symptom Likely cause What to do
YouTube will not let the channel start a live stream Verification or live-stream enablement is incomplete. Complete channel verification and enable live streaming in advance; allow up to 24 hours for first-time enablement.
OBS connects, but one destination is missing The destination is not enabled in the relay, account permissions are incomplete, or the selected account type is unsupported by the current plan or integration. Check destination toggles, reconnect and review permissions, and confirm support for the chosen profile, Page, or Group.
The relay receives video but a platform is not live The destination may require an additional event or go-live action, or its event details may not be configured. Check the relay’s destination status and that platform’s preview/event controls; follow the integration’s specific start sequence.
Video or audio stutters Upload capacity or connection stability may be insufficient for the chosen workflow. Test the connection while streaming. For direct outputs, account for the combined outgoing rates; with a relay, check the stability of the single feed to the relay.
YouTube rejects or has trouble with the encoder feed Encoder settings or the ingest URL/key may not match the selected workflow. Check the YouTube URL and key in Studio, confirm H.264, CBR, a two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds), and RTMPS where supported.
A stream key was exposed Credentials were shared or included in visible material. Replace the affected key using the platform or service’s credential controls, then update the encoder before streaming again.
One broadcast keeps running after you stop the other The destinations may have separate event controls. Check both platform event states and end each broadcast using the controls required by the chosen integration.
