Dynamic ad insertion (DAI) selects advertisements for a live stream and places them into scheduled breaks. The stream signals when a break starts and ends; an ad decision system chooses creatives; then a server, manifest-manipulation service, or player coordinates delivery and playback. The exact division of work depends on the insertion architecture.
What happens when a live ad break plays?
- Prepare the live stream. An encoder and origin create a compatible HLS or MPEG-DASH stream. The stream or manifest must signal ad opportunities so the insertion workflow can identify a break and its duration. For AWS Elemental MediaTailor’s documented live HLS setup, options include
#EXT-X-CUE-OUT/#EXT-X-CUE-INand#EXT-X-DATERANGE; its workflow requires markers in live HLS manifests. AWS MediaTailor HLS ad markers - Register the stream or session. In Google Ad Manager’s live pod-serving workflow, the player registers a live stream and receives a unique session identifier. Google live pod serving
- Signal the break. At the ad opportunity, stream or manifest metadata identifies the avail. Google’s server-guided ad insertion (SGAI) workflow can use manifest markers. For scheduled breaks, Google recommends sending its optional Early Ad Break Notification (EABN) about one minute or more beforehand so the ad system can prepare; this is Google-specific implementation guidance, not a universal timing rule. Google server-guided ad insertion
- Choose ads. An ad decision server (ADS) uses the request and available targeting information to select creatives. In AWS MediaTailor’s described flow, the service passes viewer parameters to an ADS, which returns creative URLs in a VAST or VMAP response. AWS MediaTailor workflow
- Assemble and deliver the break. Depending on the architecture, a hosted service or a separate manifest manipulator joins ad segments or references to the content stream. Full-service DAI can deliver a stream with ad breaks inserted; pod serving and SGAI divide more of the manifest or playback coordination with the publisher’s components.
- Play and measure. The player follows the content and ad media, reacts to break metadata, and sends verification or tracking events. An ad appearing in a manifest is not by itself proof that a viewer completed it.
How the main insertion architectures differ
These are vendor-specific workflow descriptions, not interchangeable product guarantees. Compare the current documentation for the service and the player/device combination you intend to support.
| Approach | Who handles insertion | What the workflow means | What to evaluate |
|---|---|---|---|
| Full-service DAI / SSAI | A hosted DAI service selects and stitches the ad pod into the stream. | The service returns a stream with inserted breaks; the player integrates through the relevant SDK or supported workflow. | Service boundary, supported players and platforms, stream format, configuration control, and tracking needs. |
| Pod-serving SSAI | The ad service supplies pods; a separate manifest manipulator stitches or embeds ad references. | The publisher operates or integrates the stream-manipulation component and coordinates sessions, manifests, and verification. | Manifest control, engineering and operations ownership, HLS/DASH details, and player integration. |
| Server-guided ad insertion (SGAI) | The server supplies break and ad metadata; the client player coordinates playback. | Manifest markers can guide breaks while the player switches to ad-pod playback. Google documents EABN as an optional advance-preparation mechanism. | Player responsibilities, signaling, platform support, transitions, and measurement. |
| AWS MediaTailor workflow | MediaTailor mediates between player/CDN, content origin, and ad decision server. | The service returns a personalized HLS or DASH manifest using viewer parameters and the ADS decision. | Marker compatibility, origin/CDN configuration, ADS integration, and tracking mode. |

Why break markers, duration, and fallback matter
Markers are operational instructions, not decoration: they tell the insertion workflow where an avail begins and ends. In AWS’s documented live MediaTailor behavior, live ad replacement uses break markers and aims to preserve the total interval between them. AWS says a live CUE-OUT needs a duration or a matching CUE-IN. Formats and behavior vary by streaming protocol and service, so validate the exact marker syntax and timing your pipeline emits. - Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Break length also affects what the viewer sees when an ad pod does not fill the avail. Google’s pod-serving documentation notes that Ad Manager may insert slate for the unused remainder when a selected pod is shorter than the scheduled break. Design and test the break duration, marker timing, slate or other fallback, and ad-pod duration together. Google Pod Serving API
How ad playback is measured
Insertion and measurement are separate steps. Google’s live pod-serving workflow documents media-verification pings. AWS’s client-side tracking documentation describes impression and quartile beacons: start, first quartile, midpoint, third quartile, and complete. Integrate and validate the tracking method your workflow requires; do not treat an ad reference in a manifest as a completed view. AWS MediaTailor tracking documentation

What DAI does not guarantee
- It does not establish a universal latency or buffering improvement. Vendor descriptions explain intended workflows or user experience, but the cited implementation documentation does not provide an independent comparative benchmark.
- It does not guarantee fill, revenue, or a completed ad view. The cited sources do not establish general uplift figures; delivery, playback, and tracking need to be evaluated in the publisher’s own implementation.
- It does not erase format and platform differences. HLS and DASH workflows have protocol-specific requirements, and feature support depends on the particular service and player.
Or let it run in the cloud
DAI is for inserting advertisements into a live program; it is different from keeping a prerecorded video live on YouTube. If your goal is a 24/7 YouTube channel built from uploaded videos, StreamNeo is an alternative: upload a recording or playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It runs from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home; video streams as uploaded up to 4K 60fps at one price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. Monthly: $9.99 per month. Learn about StreamNeo or start your free day.
