Live game streaming has turned playing games into something people watch and experience together: viewers follow a creator’s play and commentary, talk in real time, and sometimes take part through platform features or community events. Esports fans can now follow tournaments through official broadcasts and creator co-streams. The scale is substantial, but watch-time figures do not prove that streaming causes game sales or changes how games are designed.
How has live game streaming changed gaming?
Playing became a social viewing experience
A live stream pairs gameplay with a creator’s personality, decisions, and commentary. Chat lets viewers respond to the creator and to one another as events unfold, making the stream a gathering place as well as a way to watch a game. The game remains central, but the shared experience often includes the community built around the person playing it.
A 2023 peer-reviewed study by Ella Kokinda and Paige Rodeghero interviewed 15 software and game-development streamers. Those participants described motivations including accountability, self-education, community, and visibility. The study helps explain why streaming can be useful and social for the people making streams; it is not a survey of all gaming viewers or creators, so its findings should not be generalized to every gaming community. Esports viewing now includes creator-led perspectives
Fans can watch an event through its official esports channel or follow a creator who co-streams or comments on the competition. In its Q2 2025 market summary, Stream Hatchet reported an even split between co-streaming channels and official esports channels in measured esports viewership. That is a snapshot of the report’s market and period, not a permanent split; co-streams and official broadcasts can also offer different commentary and viewing contexts. Some viewing includes platform-mediated participation
Features such as Twitch Drops can connect eligible viewing to a reward claim. Twitch reported 1.6 billion hours on streams using its DropsEnabled tag and 40 million users who participated and claimed Drops during the period covered by its 2026 report, January 1 through September 1. Those are Twitch’s own platform figures for that feature; Drops do not apply to every stream, and the figures do not establish that rewards cause purchases. Twitch’s State of Gaming 2026 report.
How large is game streaming, and what do the numbers mean?
Recent figures show large audiences, but they count different things over different periods. Twitch’s 2026 report says more than 8.6 billion hours of gaming content were watched globally on Twitch from January 1 to September 1, 2026. It is one platform’s rounded, internal figure for a partial year, and Twitch says its growth comparisons use the same period in 2025. Separately, GameSquare’s January 29, 2026 release summarizing Stream Hatchet’s annual report says global live-streaming viewership reached 36.4 billion hours in calendar 2025, up 6% year over year.

These are not like-for-like totals: one is Twitch gaming watch time for part of 2026; the other is a market estimate of global live-streaming viewership for all of 2025. Total live-streaming viewership can include non-gaming content. The sources have commercial interests in the market, and the cited releases do not establish independent auditing. Platform shares are historical snapshots
For Q2 2025, GameSquare’s summary of Stream Hatchet’s report assigned Twitch 54% of tracked market share, YouTube Gaming just under a quarter, and Kick almost 11%. These percentages describe the report’s measured market for that quarter. They should not be treated as current 2026 shares or as a universal ranking across every measure of audience, content, or platform use. GameSquare’s Q2 2025 report summary.

Esports tournament viewing grew in a changing schedule
Stream Hatchet’s Q2 2025 summary counted 729 million hours watched for esports tournaments, 6% more than a year earlier, even though it counted 37% fewer tournaments than in Q2 2024. The figures describe the tournaments and market measured in that report; they do not mean every game or event gained viewers. The contrast shows why hours watched and the number of events are separate measures.
What streaming can—and cannot—tell us about games
It creates ways to encounter games and communities
Watching a creator can expose viewers to a game, play style, or community they might not otherwise encounter. Chat, co-stream commentary, and platform-specific participation can give that discovery a social context. Those are plausible ways streaming may shape what people notice and discuss, but the figures above measure viewing and participation, not how many viewers subsequently discover or buy a game.

Audience popularity does not establish causation
The available figures document watch time, market shares, and Drops participation; they do not quantify a causal effect of livestream exposure on game sales or game design. A popular stream may coincide with interest in a game, but coincidence and correlation alone cannot show that the stream produced that interest or changed a developer’s decisions.

Live game streaming as discussed above is often a person playing and broadcasting in real time. A different use case is keeping a YouTube channel live around the clock by looping uploaded gameplay videos. That requires the right to use the video and audio, as well as a method that can keep the broadcast running; a prerecorded loop is not a live camera feed or live gameplay.
