Live streaming is not one fixed format. It can mean a one-to-many broadcast, a structured webinar, a program with invited guests, or a two-way video call. Choose by how many people need to participate, how they should interact, how formal the event is, and what production setup it needs.

What live streaming means

Live streaming delivers audio or video over the internet as an event happens or close to real time. The word is often used for one-to-many broadcasts, but it can also describe more interactive events. There is no single universal taxonomy: platforms use overlapping labels, and the same event can combine formats.

A broadcast is not automatically a conversation. The Australian eSafety Commissioner distinguishes livestreaming from video chat because two-way audio and video are not present by default; a broadcaster may invite guests, but that changes the interaction pattern. Cloudflare similarly distinguishes broadcast streaming from videoconferencing designed around real-time communication.

For a gaming audience, a tournament broadcast, a developer Q&A, a tutorial webinar, and a voice-and-video call among players may all happen live online, but they serve different purposes.

Four practical types of live streaming

One-to-many broadcast

One host, performer, or production sends a program to viewers. The audience may chat or use other platform features, but the core experience is watching a shared stream rather than speaking directly with the host. Gaming, sports, concerts, and conferences are common examples. YouTube lists gaming and sporting events among uses for encoder-based streaming, while Steamworks documents broadcasts of gameplay and developer discussions on game store pages.

Choose a broadcast when broad reach and a shared viewing experience matter more than giving each viewer a speaking role. The details of chat, audience access, and other interaction depend on the platform and its settings.

Webinar or structured live event

A webinar is a planned presentation, demonstration, training session, or announcement, usually with an agenda and defined ways for the audience to participate. A host or presenter leads; viewers may submit questions through a moderated Q&A rather than interrupting with open conversation.

Microsoft describes Teams live events as one-to-many events in which the audience primarily views shared content, with options such as moderated Q&A or conversation. That is one product’s event model, not a definition that every service must follow. Webinars and live event feeds are also examples identified by the eSafety Commissioner.

Choose this format when people need organized instruction or a presentation and questions should be managed. A webinar can itself be delivered as a broadcast.

Collaborative stream or co-stream

A collaborative stream brings multiple hosts or invited guests into one program, as in an interview, panel, or discussion. It may still be a one-to-many broadcast for viewers: the guests talk with one another, while the audience watches and perhaps participates through chat or questions. The eSafety Commissioner notes that livestreamers may invite guests to add video to a stream.

Choose this approach when the event depends on several perspectives or a guest’s contribution. Check the chosen service’s guest features and limits rather than assuming every platform supports the same workflow.

Two-way video call or conference

In a video call or conference, participants exchange audio and video so they can speak and respond directly to one another. That differs from a broadcast, where the default pattern is a program sent to viewers. Cloudflare describes videoconferencing as real-time communication, in contrast with broadcast live streaming.

Choose a call when the people attending need to participate as speakers, not simply watch. Some events combine a broadcast with invited speakers or audience questions, so the useful distinction is the interaction the event actually provides—not just the label on the platform.

Streaming method is not the same as streaming format

A format describes who is communicating with whom; a production method describes how the stream is captured and sent. You can use a webcam for a one-to-many broadcast, or an encoder for a guest discussion. YouTube identifies mobile, webcam, encoder, and supported consoles as ways to stream; these are production options, not audience formats.

Production method When it fits What to know
Mobile Quick updates or streams made directly from a phone. YouTube positions mobile streaming for quick updates. Availability and requirements depend on YouTube’s current rules and account eligibility; check its live-streaming guide.
Webcam A direct computer setup where the camera and computer are enough for the presentation. YouTube lists webcam streaming as a way to go live without a more involved encoder workflow. A webcam is an option, not a requirement for every stream.
Encoder Gameplay, overlays, more elaborate audio/video, or multiple connected devices. YouTube describes encoder workflows for uses such as gameplay and additional hardware, including microphones, cameras, and preamps. A USB microphone can be useful, but gear does not determine whether the event is a broadcast, webinar, or co-stream.
Supported console Streaming directly from a compatible game console. YouTube lists supported consoles as a streaming method. The available workflow depends on the console and platform support.

For YouTube’s current method descriptions and account requirements, see Get started with live streaming. A capture card may be relevant in some console or multi-input setups, but it is not universally required.

How to choose a format

Decide what the event needs before choosing equipment or a platform. These four questions distinguish the main options:

Anker USB C Hub, 5-in-1 USBC to HDMI Splitter with 4K Display
  • 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
  • Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
  • Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
  • HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
  • What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
  1. Audience scale: Is this for one other person, a small group, or a broad audience?
  2. Interaction: Should people mostly watch and chat, submit moderated questions, join as invited speakers, or converse freely?
  3. Structure: Is it a spontaneous hangout, a scheduled event, or a presentation with an agenda?
  4. Production needs: Is a phone or webcam sufficient, or do you need overlays, external audio, several inputs, or a console capture workflow?
If your priority is… Consider…
Reach and a shared viewing experience One-to-many broadcast
An agenda, lesson, demo, or organized questions Webinar or structured live event
Several speakers in one program Collaborative stream or co-stream
Direct, reciprocal conversation among participants Two-way video call or conference

These are decision aids, not guarantees of a platform’s capabilities. Audience size and participation options can depend on service settings; the eSafety Commissioner notes that settings affect how many people can view a stream. Verify current features and eligibility with the service you plan to use.

Keep a YouTube stream running around the clock

If your goal is specifically a continuous YouTube channel playing uploaded videos, rather than a live camera or interactive event, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload a recording or playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops uploaded video in the cloud, so your computer does not have to stay on. Every slot supports the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers, and automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. See StreamNeo for details and plan lengths.

For a video-game channel, make sure you have the rights to stream the game footage, music, and other material in your playlist. YouTube’s platform rules and a rights holder’s policies still apply; keeping a stream online does not grant permission to use content.

Try the free day by creating a StreamNeo account.

Sources and platform caveats

Platform labels, eligibility rules, and features can change, and this practical set of formats is not an exhaustive standard. The distinctions above draw on YouTube’s guide to streaming methods, the eSafety Commissioner’s overview of livestreaming, Microsoft’s description of Teams live events, Steamworks’ broadcast documentation, and Cloudflare’s explanation of live streaming:
