OBS Studio is the best free starting point for most game streamers who want control over their scenes and settings and do not mind a little setup. Choose Streamlabs Desktop if guided onboarding and integrated alerts or chat widgets matter more than maximum flexibility. Neither app can guarantee smooth streaming on its own: your game, encoder, output settings, and computer all affect performance.
Which game-streaming software should you choose?
| Choose | Best fit | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| OBS Studio | Streamers who want a free, flexible setup | Build scenes from sources such as gameplay, windows, webcams, and capture cards; configure audio filters and other settings; extend the app with plugins. |
| Streamlabs Desktop | Streamers who prefer guided setup and built-in widgets | Its setup guide walks through account linking, scenes, gameplay and camera sources, alerts or chat widgets, audio, stream settings, and a pre-stream check. The guide offers Free and Ultra choices; the reviewed setup text does not establish a price. |
These are use-case recommendations, not results from a performance test. A 2022 peer-reviewed study describes OBS and software built around it, including Streamlabs, as widely used in the streaming videos it analyzed. It provides context rather than a current feature comparison or endorsement.
OBS vs. Streamlabs: what is the practical difference?
OBS Studio: control and flexibility
The OBS Project describes OBS Studio as “Free and open source software for video recording and live streaming.” It lets you compose a broadcast from scenes and sources, apply audio filters, adjust settings, and use plugins. OBS supports Windows, macOS, and Linux downloads; confirm the current build and platform support on the official OBS site.
OBS is a strong default if you want to arrange your own scene layout and choose how your video and audio sources work together. The trade-off is that you may need to configure those pieces yourself rather than relying on a guided first-run flow.

Streamlabs Desktop: guided setup and widgets
Streamlabs’ official quick-start guide, dated May 20, 2026, walks through linking accounts, selecting or importing settings, choosing a camera and microphone, building scenes, adding Game Capture or Screen Capture, placing alert and chat widgets, configuring audio and stream settings, then testing before going live. The installer asks you to choose Free or Ultra. See the Streamlabs Desktop quick-start guide for its current flow; do not assume a plan price from the setup guide.
That guided flow may suit someone who wants widgets readily available and a more directed setup. It is not evidence that Streamlabs will perform better on a particular computer or network.

Make the choice by setup, not by a universal winner
- Choose OBS if you prioritize flexible scenes, sources, audio filters, plugins, and a free, open-source app.
- Choose Streamlabs Desktop if guided onboarding and integrated alert or chat widgets are priorities.
- Check destination and operating system before installing either one; support can vary by current app build and platform.
- Test on your own setup before scheduling a stream. Game load, encoder, resolution, frame rate, scene complexity, and other running software all affect headroom.
Will your computer handle game streaming?
Published minimum requirements are compatibility baselines, not promises of smooth gameplay and streaming at once. OBS says actual capability depends on workload: encoder choice, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity all change CPU demands. Its requirements page reviewed for this article lists Windows 10 or 11 and a DirectX 10.1-compatible GPU; macOS 11 or later with Intel or Apple Silicon and an OpenGL 3.3-compatible GPU; and Linux/Unix with an OpenGL 3.3-compatible GPU and X Window System or Wayland. Requirements can change, so check the current OBS system requirements before installing.
Streamlabs’ May 20, 2026 quick-start lists a minimum of 8 GB RAM and recommends 16 GB or more, alongside OS, CPU, GPU, and storage categories. Its separate system-requirements page recommends 16 GB or more RAM and at least a 512 GB SSD, and lists CPU, GPU, and OS baselines that differ from the newer quick-start table. Treat each as guidance from its specific page, not as one universal specification; check the latest requirements for your version.

Test the workload you actually plan to stream
- Install your chosen app and let its setup or configuration wizard detect a starting configuration. The OBS Project recommends trying its Auto-Configuration Wizard.
- Build the scene you intend to use, including your game, camera, overlays, and audio sources. More complex scenes can add workload.
- Run the actual game while recording or testing a private stream at your intended resolution and frame rate. Watch for dropped frames, encoder overload, stutters, or audio problems.
- Reduce output demands or scene complexity and test again if gameplay or the broadcast becomes unstable. A computer that can run the game alone may not have enough headroom to run both smoothly.
Do you need a capture card to stream games?
Usually not for gameplay running on the same PC that runs your broadcasting software. A capture card is for bringing video from another device into your scene—for example, a console, a second computer, or a traditional camera. OBS lists capture cards among possible sources. The Twitch getting-started guide explains this external-device use case, though its guide dates to 2020 and should not be treated as current model or compatibility advice.
- PC game on the streaming PC: start with software capture such as Game Capture or Screen Capture; do not buy a card unless your setup needs external video input.
- Console: if the game is running on the console and you want the computer to broadcast it, use a capture card that supports the console’s output and your computer’s connection.
- Second PC or camera: a card may be needed to ingest that device’s video, depending on the device and connection.
If you shop for a USB capture card for streaming, verify current compatibility with your console or camera, operating system, ports, resolution, and frame rate. Compatibility differs between cards; the older Twitch guide’s model examples are not current purchase recommendations.

Set up your first stream and check it before going live
With OBS Studio
- Install OBS from the OBS Project website, then use the Auto-Configuration Wizard to get a starting setup.
- Create a scene and add the sources you need. For PC gameplay, add a game or screen source; add a webcam, microphone, or capture card only if your setup uses one.
- Check your audio mixer while the game is running. Confirm that game audio and microphone audio register at useful levels and that filters or sources are not muting or duplicating sound.
- Configure the stream destination and output settings in OBS, then run a test with the game and scene you intend to broadcast. Adjust settings if the encoder struggles or the stream stutters.
With Streamlabs Desktop
- Follow Streamlabs’ current quick-start: link the accounts you need and select or import settings.
- Choose your camera and microphone, then create scenes and add Game Capture or Screen Capture for gameplay.
- Add alerts, chat, or other widgets if you want them, and configure audio and stream settings.
- Test widget behavior, camera placement, and audio meters before going live. Streamlabs’ guide suggests 30 FPS for slower card games and 60 FPS for fast action as general starting guidance, not guaranteed optimal settings.
Choose settings by testing, not by copying a magic preset
There is no single resolution, frame rate, bitrate, or encoder setting that suits every game and computer. The relevant sources do not establish a universal bitrate preset. Start with the app’s setup guidance, the current requirements for your platform, and the limits of your upload connection and hardware; then test the actual game and scene. If the encoder overloads or the game becomes choppy, lower output demands or simplify the scene and test again.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Common problems and what to check
- The stream stutters or the game slows down: the combined game, encoder, and scene may exceed available headroom. Test at a lower output resolution or frame rate, reduce scene complexity, and close unnecessary applications.
- The game does not appear in the preview: confirm the correct game or screen source is in the active scene. For an external console or computer, check the capture card and its connection rather than expecting PC game capture to detect it.
- Viewers cannot hear the microphone or game: check that the intended source is present and unmuted, then watch the audio meters while speaking or playing. Test the mix before going live.
- An alert or chat widget is missing or misplaced: check the widget source and its position in the scene, then use Streamlabs’ recommended pre-stream widget test if you use Desktop.
- Your setup guide’s requirements disagree with another page: follow the current requirements page for your installed version and operating system. Streamlabs’ two cited pages publish different baselines, so do not merge them into a single guaranteed minimum.
Copyright and platform rules still apply
Streaming software only sends your scene to a platform; it does not grant rights to the game, music, or other material in that scene. Before broadcasting, check the platform’s current rules and ensure you have permission to use any third-party music, video, or other protected content. Do not assume that in-game music is cleared for livestreaming.
