Video encoding compresses live video and audio into a stream that a platform can receive and viewers can watch. Its settings—especially bitrate, resolution, frame rate, codec, and keyframe interval—affect picture quality, upload use, computer workload, compatibility, and latency. There is no single best bitrate or encoder for every stream: choose settings that your platform supports and your system and connection can sustain.

What is video encoding?

An encoder turns the video coming from a game, camera, or other source into a compressed digital stream. Without compression, live video would require far more data to send over an internet connection. Encoding makes the feed practical to transmit, while trading off among visual detail, data rate, processing demand, and delay.

In a typical streaming setup, capture software such as OBS takes the source, an encoder compresses it, and the software sends the resulting stream to a platform using an ingest protocol. The platform receives that stream and delivers it to viewers. Each stage has its own requirements: an encoder can produce a technically sound picture that a platform cannot accept if its codec, format, or protocol is unsupported.

The settings that shape the stream

  • Bitrate is the amount of data sent over time, commonly expressed in kilobits per second (kbps). It limits how much image information can be carried.
  • Resolution is the number of pixels in each frame, such as 1920 × 1080. More pixels take more work to encode and generally need more data to preserve detail.
  • Frame rate is the number of frames sent each second, such as 30 or 60 fps. More frames can make motion look smoother, but increase encoding and bandwidth demands.
  • Codec is the compression format, such as H.264, HEVC, or VP9. The encoder and receiving platform must support a compatible codec.
  • Preset controls how much effort an encoder spends compressing video. For x264, presets trade CPU usage against encoding work.
  • Keyframes are reference frames in a sequence of pictures. Their spacing affects how the stream is structured and can matter to platform health checks and playback.

How does bitrate affect live-stream quality?

More bitrate gives the encoder more room to represent detail and fast-changing images, but it consumes more upload capacity. Too little bitrate can make a stream look blocky or smeared, especially when a game scene changes quickly. A high bitrate cannot repair an encoder that is overloaded, make an unsupported codec compatible, or guarantee uninterrupted delivery if the upload connection is unstable.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Bitrate needs depend on resolution, frame rate, scene motion, encoder, and preset. OBS’s x264 guide gives an illustrative example: high-motion 1080p60 video using x264 at the veryfast preset may need more than 8,000 kbps, while low-motion content can work at a much lower rate. That is an OBS example under its stated assumptions, not a universal recommendation or a current platform limit. Consult the current settings for the platform and protocol you use.

Choose a sustainable rate, not just a higher one

  • Check the platform’s current bitrate guidance for your chosen resolution, frame rate, codec, and ingest method.
  • Allow upload headroom beyond the stream’s target bitrate. Other devices and applications can use bandwidth too, and a connection that can only just match the stream rate leaves little margin for variation.
  • Test the stream under the same conditions as the real broadcast. Fast gameplay, particle effects, camera movement, and detailed scenes can be harder to encode than a static menu or talking head.
  • If the platform reports bitrate or connection health problems, lower the target bitrate or reduce resolution or frame rate, then retest.

How do resolution, frame rate, and motion interact?

Resolution and frame rate describe what the encoder must represent; bitrate describes how much data it has to represent it. Increasing resolution adds pixels to each frame. Increasing frame rate adds frames each second. If the bitrate stays fixed while either rises, the encoder has less data available per pixel or frame, so visible quality can suffer. High-motion scenes also change substantially from frame to frame and can need more bitrate than a relatively still scene.

For a game stream, pick a resolution and frame rate that suit the content and the computer’s capacity, then use a platform-compatible bitrate that the upload connection can sustain. A smooth, stable lower-resolution stream is often more useful to viewers than a higher-spec stream that repeatedly drops frames or buffers. The exact balance depends on the game, encoder, platform, and audience connection.

Should you use software or hardware encoding?

Software encoding uses the CPU; OBS’s x264 encoder is one example. Hardware encoding moves the work to a dedicated video-encoding component in a GPU. OBS generally recommends hardware encoders for performance because they take workload off the CPU, while noting that earlier hardware-encoder generations can produce lower image quality at the same bitrate than x264 at its default veryfast preset. The result depends on the hardware generation, settings, bitrate, and workload.

Approach Where encoding work happens Trade-off to consider
Software (x264) CPU Can provide strong quality per bitrate, but high-resolution, high-frame-rate encoding can heavily load the CPU.
Hardware Specialized component in the GPU Can reduce CPU load and improve performance headroom; image quality at a given bitrate depends on the encoder generation and settings.

Try the encoder options already available in your setup before buying hardware. Watch for encoding overload and dropped frames during a real workload, not only when the game is idle. A graphics card with a hardware video encoder may be a sensible fit if your current computer cannot encode reliably or efficiently; it is not a requirement for every streamer.

What an x264 preset changes

x264 presets adjust the amount of CPU work spent encoding. More encoding work can improve compression efficiency, but demands more processing capacity; a preset that overloads the CPU can undermine the stream’s stability. OBS presents presets as choices rather than naming one universally best option. Select one your system can sustain while running the game and other streaming tasks.

Why do streaming platforms have different settings?

Platforms differ in the protocols and codecs they accept, as well as their specific ingest requirements. YouTube’s protocol comparison describes RTMPS as a secure extension of RTMP and says its HLS and DASH ingest options support codecs that RTMP/RTMPS do not. YouTube lists H.264 for RTMPS, H.264 or HEVC for HLS, and H.264 or VP9 for DASH. These are YouTube-specific capabilities, not rules for every service.

YouTube says newer codecs such as VP9 and HEVC can be more efficient than H.264, potentially providing higher quality at a given bitrate or similar quality at a lower bitrate. Codec efficiency alone does not determine what to choose: the platform, protocol, encoder, and viewer delivery path must all support it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

In YouTube’s guidance, HLS and DASH ingestion typically have greater latency than RTMP because they are segment-based. This is a platform’s protocol guidance, not a universal latency measurement for every implementation. If low delay is important, check the current platform guidance for the ingest protocol and latency mode you intend to use.

YouTube HLS has specific format requirements

YouTube’s HLS ingestion guide is specific to YouTube HLS; do not apply it automatically to RTMPS, DASH, or another platform. It specifies:

  • Muxed audio and video in M2TS format.
  • H.264 or HEVC video, with frame rates up to 60 fps.
  • A closed GOP and AAC single-track audio.
  • One encoded stream at the highest resolution intended for viewers; YouTube handles transcoding to other resolutions and bitrates.
  • Media segments generally one to four seconds long, with a five-second maximum.

Use the current ingestion documentation for the exact protocol you configure. A protocol’s supported maximum is a capability, not a recommendation that every channel should encode at that maximum.

What are keyframes, GOPs, and transcoding?

Keyframes and GOP structure

A group of pictures (GOP) contains keyframes and the frames encoded in relation to them. Keyframe spacing is a compatibility and stream-health setting, not just a picture-quality control. YouTube’s Live API health guidance recommends a keyframe frequency of four seconds or less and can flag open GOP settings or unsupported codecs. That guidance is YouTube-specific; follow the receiving platform’s current requirements.

YouTube’s API can surface health issues involving bitrate, codecs, resolution, frame rate, whether audio and video are present, and keyframe frequency. Use those health messages to narrow down a problem, then compare the encoder configuration with the current creator-facing instructions for the chosen protocol.

Transcoding happens after your encoder

Transcoding is a downstream process in which a platform converts an ingested feed into additional versions with different resolutions, frame rates, or bitrates. Those versions let viewers choose a quality suited to their device and connection. It is distinct from your initial encoding step: you encode one feed for ingest, while the platform may create alternatives for delivery. Transcoding availability and behavior depend on the platform and can change, so check its current guidance rather than assuming every service creates the same options.

OBS notes that a consistent keyframe interval can help viewers move smoothly between quality options. The platform’s supported settings take priority over a general encoder preference.

How to choose and verify live-encoding settings

  1. Confirm the destination’s requirements. In the platform’s current live-streaming guidance, identify the ingest protocol, accepted codec, resolution and frame-rate limits, bitrate guidance, audio format, and keyframe or GOP requirements.
  2. Pick a realistic resolution and frame rate. Match them to the content and to what your system can encode reliably while the game and other applications are running.
  3. Choose a compatible encoder. Compare the software and hardware options available in your streaming software. Do not assume a hardware encoder is always better for quality, or that software encoding will fit every CPU workload.
  4. Set bitrate within both platform and connection limits. Use the platform’s current guidance as the boundary and leave upload headroom. Treat examples from an encoder guide as starting points, not platform rules.
  5. Set keyframes and stream format for the chosen ingest path. Apply the receiving platform’s requirements. For YouTube, its Live API health guidance recommends a keyframe frequency of four seconds or less; HLS additionally has the format requirements described above.
  6. Run a private or otherwise controlled test if the platform supports it. Exercise the same game, scenes, and overlays you plan to use, then inspect platform health messages and the local encoder statistics.
  7. Change one variable at a time. If the image breaks up, drops frames, or arrives with too much delay, identify whether the issue is encoding load, available bitrate, network delivery, compatibility, or ingest protocol before changing settings.

Common encoding problems and fixes

Symptom Likely area to check Practical fix
Blocky or smeared picture, especially in fast scenes Bitrate may be insufficient for the resolution, frame rate, or motion. Check platform guidance; reduce resolution or frame rate, or raise bitrate only if the platform permits it and your upload has headroom.
Encoding overload or local dropped frames CPU or GPU encoder workload may exceed available capacity. Use a less demanding preset or encoding load, lower resolution or frame rate, or test an available hardware encoder. Retest with the actual game running.
Platform flags the codec or GOP The codec or GOP setting may not be supported for the selected protocol; YouTube health guidance can flag unsupported codecs and open GOP settings. Match the encoder to the platform’s current protocol requirements and use its required GOP/keyframe configuration.
Stream health reports bitrate trouble Target bitrate may be outside platform guidance or the connection may not sustain it. Verify the platform’s recommended range and reduce the target bitrate or stream demands if upload capacity is inconsistent.
Audio or video missing from ingest Track selection, muxing, or stream configuration may not match the protocol. Check that the required audio and video are enabled and encoded in the format specified for the chosen ingest path. For YouTube HLS, verify muxed audio/video and AAC single-track audio.
Viewer quality options are unavailable or transitions are rough Transcoding may not be available as expected, or keyframe intervals may be inconsistent. Check the platform’s current transcoding behavior and keep the keyframe interval consistent where the encoder and platform allow it.
