How to Use AR and 3D Graphics in Live Gaming Streams

Add flat graphics with an OBS scene, use Virtual Camera to share that scene with webcam-compatible apps, or use a supported LIV setup for VR mixed reality.

For a standard gaming stream, add 2D graphics and other visual elements as sources in an OBS scene, then stream that composition. Use OBS Virtual Camera when another webcam-compatible app needs to receive the scene. For VR mixed reality—where a real player or camera appears alongside game-rendered elements—use a supported capture workflow such as LIV and plan for camera alignment and calibration. These are different jobs: a graphic layered over video is not automatically augmented reality.

What “AR” and “3D graphics” mean in a stream

A stream can include visual elements in at least three distinct ways. Knowing which one you want determines the software and setup.

Flat graphics layered over the video

A logo, alert, frame, animated graphic, or other overlay is composited into the outgoing picture. It can be placed over gameplay in OBS, but its position is relative to the video composition: it does not inherently understand the game world, track an object, or respond to depth.

Game-aware mixed reality

VR mixed-reality capture can combine footage of a real player or camera with virtual elements rendered from a supported game. The result depends on game integration and a compatible capture path, plus correct camera setup and alignment. LIV describes this kind of creator workflow for supported games; its SDK is for developers adding support, not something creators need to install for games that already support LIV.

Interactive 3D spectator views

A conventional stream is a composed 2D video. A spectator-controlled 3D view is a different capability: a 2022 CHI paper describes a research system that reconstructs a 3D representation from depth and camera data. Ordinary OBS overlays do not create that kind of interactive view.

How to add graphics to a standard desktop gaming stream

  1. Build an OBS scene. Add the gameplay capture and any camera or graphic elements you want viewers to see. A conventional image, browser-based graphic, animation, or other overlay can be part of the composition. Arrange the sources in the scene to create the intended picture.
  2. Stream the composed scene from OBS. The OBS scene is the composition layer: gameplay and graphic sources appear together in the outgoing stream. Check the scene in the actual streaming output before going live.
  3. Use OBS Virtual Camera only if another app needs a webcam feed. In OBS, start Virtual Camera from the Controls dock. Open its settings and choose the output that the receiving application should see: Program, Preview, a single Scene, or a single Source. Choose Program for the normal OBS output. Preview can expose scene edits made in Studio Mode, so avoid it when those edits should remain private.
  4. Test the destination application. Select OBS Virtual Camera as its camera input and confirm the picture and audio behavior there. Virtual Camera is intended for applications that accept webcam video; it is not the same thing as streaming directly from a game or app.

OBS’s official guide documents the Virtual Camera’s purpose, controls, and output modes: OBS Virtual Camera Guide. It does not, by itself, document every method for configuring individual overlay sources, so consult the relevant source or plugin documentation for its setup.

How to put a VR player into gameplay with mixed-reality capture

  1. Check compatibility for the exact game and capture mode. Confirm that the game supports the LIV workflow you intend to use. Requirements are mode-specific; for example, LIV’s Presence Platform capture has particular PCVR, OpenXR, and SteamVR requirements that should not be assumed to apply to every LIV mode. Check LIV’s current overview for the selected workflow.
  2. Start LIV capture and select the camera. Add or choose the camera device in the mixed-reality setup, then select a resolution that matches the camera. LIV’s setup guidance also calls out ARGB when using NVIDIA Broadcast in the described configuration.
  3. Capture the LIV Output window in OBS. Add the output to the OBS composition and check the result, rather than relying only on the initial preview.
  4. Calibrate and test before broadcasting. Check camera-to-game alignment, foreground behavior, and controller latency. If the virtual scene and camera do not line up, recalibrate and test again before going live.
  5. Plan for background separation if using a real camera. LIV says its documented real-camera workflow does not offer live background segmentation. Its guidance recommends a green screen with calibration for this use case. That is relevant to this mixed-reality setup, not a general requirement for ordinary OBS overlays.

Use LIV’s official documentation for current device and mode-specific directions: What is LIV? and LIV camera setup. Compatibility and runtime requirements can change, so verify them for your game, platform, and capture mode before building the setup around them.

Which approach fits your stream?

Approach What it composites Tracking or depth What to verify
OBS scene graphics Gameplay plus flat graphic, camera, or other sources in one video composition Elements are positioned in the video scene; game-world tracking is not implied Source setup and the final scene output
OBS Virtual Camera An OBS Program, Preview, Scene, or Source output sent as webcam-style video Uses the selected OBS output; does not add game-aware tracking That the destination accepts webcam video, and that the selected output is appropriate
VR mixed-reality capture Real player or camera footage combined with virtual elements from a supported game Depends on game integration and camera alignment or calibration Game and mode compatibility, platform/runtime requirements, camera selection, calibration, and foreground behavior
Research 3D spectator view A reconstructed 3D representation intended for spectator interaction Uses depth and camera data in the system described in the 2022 CHI paper It is not a feature created by ordinary OBS overlays; the paper describes a system, not a current consumer how-to

For context, Hartmann and Vogel’s 2022 CHI paper, “Enhanced Videogame Livestreaming by Reconstructing an Interactive 3D Game View for Spectators”, describes the system.

Troubleshooting before you go live

  • The receiving app does not show OBS Virtual Camera. Confirm Virtual Camera is started in OBS, then check the receiving app’s camera selection. Verify the app supports webcam input and test again after changing the selection.
  • The receiving app shows edits or a different scene than expected. Check the Virtual Camera output mode. Use Program for the normal OBS output; Preview can reveal changes made in Studio Mode. If you selected Scene or Source, confirm it is the intended one.
  • The player looks misaligned with the virtual game scene. Recheck camera placement and LIV calibration, then inspect the composited output. Do not treat a preview that looks plausible as proof of alignment in the final capture.
  • The real camera’s background remains visible. LIV’s documented real-camera workflow does not provide live segmentation. Use the green-screen-and-calibration approach LIV recommends for this case, or choose a composition that does not depend on background removal.
  • The game or capture mode does not work with the expected runtime. Recheck the current LIV instructions for that specific mode and platform. Requirements for one capture path should not be generalized to another.
  • The controller feels delayed in the composite. Test controller latency as part of LIV’s output checks, then review the capture and alignment setup before broadcasting.
