Choose YouTube Live if video discovery and replays fit your plan
Vertical and horizontal streams serve different viewing experiences
YouTube documents mobile, webcam, encoder, and console routes to livestreaming. Encoder setups can combine gameplay, overlays, and production equipment such as microphones, cameras, and preamps; a USB microphone is optional gear, not a platform requirement. YouTube’s feature table says vertical live streams may be discoverable in the Shorts feed, while horizontal streams include features such as clickable links in chat and the channel description, live pre-rolls and mid-rolls, 4K broadcast, premieres, and live redirect. Vertical live viewing on mobile uses a full-screen experience with a scrollable feed. That may suit a creator whose presentation works in portrait orientation and who wants another route for viewers to encounter a live stream. Livestreams can contribute to a video library
YouTube says a channel may publish a replay or highlights after a stream ends. If your content plan includes searchable or reusable videos alongside live broadcasts, that documented workflow may be useful. It does not establish that replay views or YouTube monetization will earn more than Twitch. YouTube replay guidance

Choose Twitch if its live community tools fit your audience
Twitch is the better fit when you want to build within its live-focused creator ecosystem and its interaction patterns make sense for your content. The practical question is whether your intended viewers are likely to spend time there and use the community features—not whether Twitch is inherently better for gaming or every other live format.
Twitch announced on May 13, 2026 that Bits, subscriptions, emotes, badges, and Channel Points would be available to eligible streamers globally through Creator Dashboard onboarding. Access to these tools does not itself mean payout eligibility: Twitch says streamers must earn Affiliate or Partner status to receive a payout. Twitch announcement

Compare monetization requirements without mistaking them for income
Twitch: tool access, Affiliate, and Partner are distinct
Twitch’s Affiliate FAQ lists these activity thresholds: 25 followers, four streamed hours, streams on four different days, and an average of three viewers on four stream days in the last 30 days. The Partner program is a further application-based status; Twitch’s overview lists six qualifying streams with at least 75 average viewers per 30-day period in each of the two consecutive months before applying. YouTube: earlier fan-funding access differs from ad revenue
As displayed on YouTube’s monetization page on October 3, 2026, eligible regions may qualify for earlier fan-funding and Shopping features with 500 subscribers, three public uploads in 90 days, and either 3,000 long-form watch hours in 365 days or 3 million Shorts views in 90 days. For ad and YouTube Premium revenue, the page lists 1,000 subscribers and either 4,000 long-form watch hours in 365 days or 10 million Shorts views in 90 days. Fan-funding features have restrictions
Eligible YouTube creators may use Super Chat and Super Stickers during livestreams and Premieres, subject to location, terms, and content restrictions. They are unavailable for some states and types of video, including age-restricted, unlisted, private, and made-for-kids content, and when chat or comments are turned off. YouTube Supers eligibility
Because each platform has its own eligibility steps and feature conditions, a lower-looking threshold alone cannot tell you which will produce income sooner or pay more. Assess your actual audience, content, location, and likely income mix.

A practical way to make the choice
- Start with audience fit. Consider where the people you want to reach already watch livestreams and whether you have an existing channel or community there.
- Match the format to the content. Consider YouTube’s vertical Shorts-feed discovery and horizontal feature set, or whether Twitch’s live-community tools better suit your streams.
- Decide what happens after the broadcast. If you want replays or highlights to become channel videos, YouTube documents that route.
- Check eligibility for your location and account. Compare the current platform requirements and feature rules rather than treating headline thresholds as a promise of payment.
- Choose a platform you can sustain. A consistent schedule and interaction style that fit your content matter more than a speculative platform-wide growth or revenue claim.
