To run ads on a YouTube live stream, open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, turn on monetization for the stream, and choose how to handle mid-rolls. Pre-roll and display ads are enabled with monetization; mid-rolls can be automatic, scheduled, or inserted manually. You must be eligible for live ad revenue through the YouTube Partner Program and accept the Watch Page Monetization Module.
What you need before enabling live ads
- Your channel must be in the YouTube Partner Program and have accepted the Watch Page Monetization Module to earn ad and YouTube Premium revenue from live streams viewed on the Watch Page or embedded in the YouTube player. See YouTube’s Watch Page Monetization Module details.
- Ad settings are configured per stream in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. A monetized channel does not mean every ad slot will serve an ad.
How to turn on ads for a live stream
- Open YouTube Studio and select Create → Go live.
- Start a stream from the Stream tab, or schedule one from Manage.
- Select Edit → Monetization.
- Set Monetization to On. For eligible streams, this enables pre-roll and display ads.
- Choose a mid-roll approach: Automatic, Scheduled, or Manual.

Choose how to handle mid-roll ads

YouTube reported that creators who chose live automatic mid-rolls saw an average uplift of over 20% in in-stream ad revenue per hour. That figure compares channels with live automatic mid-rolls enabled with channels without them, averaged across 207 countries in January 2024; it is not a forecast for your channel or a guarantee of ad delivery. How to avoid interrupting an important moment
Pause automatic mid-rolls
In Live Control Room, use Delay ads to pause automatic mid-rolls for 10 minutes. A five-second countdown appears before automatic ads resume. This does not suppress a mid-roll you insert manually, so avoid triggering manual breaks while relying on the delay.

Use a temporary away screen
Take a Break offers 1-, 3-, or 5-minute intervals. Eligible viewers may see ads during the break, so do not treat it as an ad-free pause.
What viewers see—and why ads may not appear
- YouTube does not guarantee that an ad slot will serve an ad. Its systems decide whether an ad runs based on factors intended to balance viewer experience, creator earnings, and advertiser values.
- Viewers who are not served an ad continue watching the live stream. Viewers who do receive one rejoin when it ends or when they skip it.
- When a live stream is embedded on an external site with autoplay, YouTube says ads are turned off for that live stream.
- Ads may be limited or unavailable for age-restricted content or content that does not comply with advertiser-friendly guidelines. Advertisers may also avoid content they consider misaligned with their brands.

Check live-stream ad results in Analytics
After the stream, open YouTube Analytics and select the Live filter to review live-stream and live-replay ad revenue. Use actual results rather than assuming every configured slot delivered an ad.
Optional: insert manual ads with a Stream Deck
YouTube’s live monetization help page names a YouTube plugin for Elgato Stream Deck that can insert ads while streaming. This is an optional physical control; the standard monetization and ad settings remain in Live Control Room. The cited help page does not establish which current models are compatible or confirm present retail availability, so verify those details before buying. No Stream Deck is required for the basic setup.
