For a YouTube Short, the simplest route is to add a track from the Shorts Audio Library using YouTube’s Shorts creation tools, then stay within the duration shown for that track. A sound’s popularity—or its appearance in Shorts—does not give you permission to download it, use it in a regular video or livestream, or carry it to another platform.
What music can I use on YouTube?
Use music you created yourself, music in the YouTube Audio Library, music added through the Shorts Audio Library for a Short, or a track whose license explicitly covers your intended use. YouTube’s basic standard is public-domain music or music used with the copyright owner’s permission. A “free” or “royalty-free” label, a credit in the description, or a track that is trending does not establish that permission.
Before publishing, check the specific track’s terms for the video format, allowed duration, territory, channel, platform, repeat use, and monetization. These details can differ from one track to another. There is no general number of seconds that is automatically legal to use.
How to add trending audio to a YouTube Short
- Open YouTube’s Shorts creation tools and choose the option to add sound.
- Find and select the track in the Shorts Audio Library. Use the duration displayed for that specific sound; availability and permitted use can vary by track and territory.
- Create and publish the Short using the in-product audio. Do not download the track and add it as an imported file if you are relying on the Shorts library’s licensing arrangement.
YouTube says most Shorts Audio Library songs can be used for up to 90 seconds in a three-minute Short, while some are limited to 60 or 30 seconds. Check the selected sound’s screen rather than assuming a duration. The library contains music covered by Shorts-specific agreements; adding a copyrighted song outside the Shorts tools may instead expose your video to standard Content ID claims or a copyright removal request. YouTube’s Shorts audio guidance and three-minute Shorts guidance explain the current limits.

Can I use a Shorts sound in a regular YouTube video or livestream?
Do not assume so. Shorts Audio Library access is not a general license for long-form uploads, livestreams, downloads, or use on another platform. Long-form videos and livestreams need a source and license that specifically covers those formats.
YouTube Audio Library
YouTube Studio’s Audio Library offers music and sound effects that creators can preview and download at no charge. YouTube says its royalty-free Audio Library music will not receive a Content ID claim, and its licenses are the stated exception that can be used in multiple videos uploaded to YouTube. Check the individual track’s terms, including any attribution requirement. YouTube Audio Library guidance

Creator Music
Creator Music is a separate catalog in YouTube Studio. Depending on the track, eligible creators may be able to use a no-cost license and retain full video monetization, or use a track under revenue-sharing terms. Its licensing and revenue-sharing tracks apply to long-form videos, not Shorts or livestreams. Most Creator Music licenses are for one use in one YouTube video; they do not transfer to another channel or platform. YouTube Audio Library licenses are the stated multi-video exception.
YouTube currently documents Creator Music availability for U.S. creators in the YouTube Partner Program, with expansion beyond the U.S. pending. Its Help page says paid licenses began phasing out in August 2026: August 10, 2026 was the last day to purchase and use them. Previously applied paid licenses remain valid until expiry; purchased licenses not used by that deadline are refunded. Check the live catalog and track terms before relying on availability. Music from a creator or another rights-holder
Your own original music or a track from a third-party licensing service may work, but only if the written license covers the exact use. Confirm whether it covers YouTube Shorts, long-form videos, livestreams, monetization, your territory, repeat uploads, and any other platforms where you plan to post. Do not infer broad rights from “royalty-free.”
Can I use trending audio on YouTube without a copyright claim?
Not necessarily. Trending status does not change copyright, and even music described as free can be flagged by Content ID. The strongest practical approach is to use music through the in-product route intended for your format or retain written permission whose scope matches your use. YouTube’s explanation of copyright-safe music describes these distinctions.

For a track you license, keep the license and note its restrictions before publishing. A license is permission to use someone else’s protected content, not a promise that an automated system will never generate a claim. Check the claim notice if one appears.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What happens if my Short is claimed or blocked?
A Content ID claim is not the same as a copyright removal request or copyright strike. Depending on the rights-holder’s policy, a claim may block a video, monetize it with ads (sometimes sharing revenue), or track viewership; the result can differ by territory. A valid copyright removal request can result in a strike. YouTube’s Content ID claim guidance

If YouTube shows a Content ID claim
- In YouTube Studio, inspect the claim to see the claimant and the material identified.
- If the claim is valid, you can leave it in place or use the available Studio tools to mute, trim, or replace the claimed audio. YouTube Audio Library audio is an option for replacement.
- Dispute only if you have a good-faith basis and the necessary rights. YouTube does not mediate disputes; an unsupported dispute may be followed by a removal request.
If your Short is blocked
Check the live notice in Studio for the specific reason and available actions. YouTube Help guidance updated for September 24, 2026 says new Shorts longer than one minute but under three minutes with an active Content ID claim will no longer be automatically blocked and may remain playable. That is a conditional platform-policy change, not permission to use the track or a guarantee that a particular Short will stay available. Other English Help wording still describes the earlier automatic-blocking rule, so rely on the current claim notice and Studio outcome for your video.
