To reduce AWS Elemental MediaConvert costs, estimate charges per output—not just per input file—then remove unnecessary renditions, review each output’s resolution, frame rate, codec and quality mode, and account for tier, region and optional processing charges. Compare reserved queues with on-demand only when you have predictable, sustained usage and have checked feature compatibility. MediaConvert prices and features can change, so verify current regional rates before changing a production workflow.

How MediaConvert charges for encoding

MediaConvert’s on-demand pricing is based on the duration of each output and a normalized-minute multiplier determined by the output’s features. One input minute can therefore generate more than one billable output minute, and outputs of the same duration can have different multipliers. AWS describes two on-demand tiers, Basic and Professional: resolution, codec and frame rate affect Basic pricing; Professional also varies with quality setting. Which tier applies depends on the encoding features used. Check AWS’s MediaConvert pricing page for current rates, multipliers and regional rules.

AWS says output duration is calculated in one-second increments and converted to fractional minutes, with a 10-second minimum per output. A practical estimate is:

Estimated normalized minutes = sum of (each output’s billable duration in minutes × that output’s applicable multiplier).

Calculate separately for each output, then group the totals by AWS Region and pricing tier before applying current monthly volume thresholds and rates. Include audio outputs and paid add-ons where applicable. This is an estimate framework, not a substitute for the live pricing page or an account-specific bill.

Example output Multiplier example What the figure means
Basic AVC, single-pass speed-optimized or balanced, HD at no more than 30 fps 2× Each eligible output minute counts as two normalized minutes; this is not a standalone price.
Basic AVC, single-pass speed-optimized or balanced, 4K at no more than 30 fps 4× Each eligible output minute counts as four normalized minutes; this is not a standalone price.

These multiplier examples are from AWS’s pricing documentation and apply only to the specified Basic AVC modes. Do not use them to estimate a Professional workflow or assume a different codec or mode has the same multiplier. The pricing page also gives a dated example of $0.0075 per normalized minute for the first 100,000 Basic-tier normalized minutes in US East (Ohio). That is an example, not a universal or guaranteed current rate; region, tier, monthly usage and output characteristics affect the actual price. Verify the live regional pricing.

  1. List every output. Include each rendition, format and audio output the job creates, with its expected duration.
  2. Record cost-driving settings. For each output, note resolution, frame rate, codec, encoding mode or quality setting, and the applicable tier.
  3. Include optional processing. Record paid features and integrations, such as HDR processing, audio features, frame-rate conversion or watermarking.
  4. Find each applicable multiplier. Use AWS’s current pricing page for the output’s combination of settings; do not infer a multiplier from a similar-looking workflow.
  5. Sum by tier and Region. Apply the current monthly regional volume thresholds and rates to the relevant normalized-minute totals.
  6. Compare with the actual bill. Check whether output counts, processing features, queue selection and regional usage match the estimate.

This model helps identify whether the main opportunity is fewer outputs, different settings, fewer add-ons, better use of monthly volume discounts or a different queue strategy.

Reduce processing without weakening delivery requirements

1. Make the output ladder intentional

Every rendition a job produces contributes processing. Check which resolutions and formats the distribution workflow actually needs before removing one. Fewer outputs or a smaller resolution can reduce normalized minutes, but the right ladder depends on the devices, bandwidth and quality requirements of the audience. Test representative gameplay, menus, fine text, motion and dark scenes before adopting a lower-resolution or lower-frame-rate output.

2. Match frame rate to the use case

Frame rate affects normalized-minute multipliers. A lower frame rate may cost less to process, but it can be unsuitable for fast-moving gameplay or a delivery specification that requires a higher frame rate. Validate the result in the intended player and distribution path rather than choosing solely by multiplier. Check the pricing page for the actual codec and frame-rate combination.

3. Choose codec and quality mode by total workflow cost

Codec, encoding mode and quality settings can change both the multiplier and the pricing tier. A codec with better compression is not automatically cheaper to encode in MediaConvert. Compare its processing cost with storage and delivery bandwidth, and check whether quality-optimized or multi-pass settings carry a different multiplier from speed-optimized single-pass settings. Make the decision against delivery requirements and representative output review, not a universal claim that one mode is visually equivalent or always cheaper.

4. Remove optional processing that the delivery does not need

Some features add charges beyond base encoding. AWS lists Dolby Audio, Audio Normalization, Dolby Vision, HDR10+, FrameFormer frame-rate conversion and watermarking integrations among features that can incur additional charges. FrameFormer also increases processing time and has a significant add-on cost according to the MediaConvert Jobs API documentation. Keep an add-on when the delivery requirement depends on it; otherwise, remove it from the job and recalculate.

Use monthly volume discounts where workload allows

AWS says on-demand normalized-minute discounts rise with usage and are calculated monthly, separately by Region and tier. The discounts apply automatically; AWS says they do not require an upfront commitment. AWS’s guidance published August 7, 2025 also says eligible usage across accounts in an AWS Organization can be aggregated through consolidated billing. Confirm current thresholds and eligibility on the pricing page rather than relying on an older example. AWS tiered-pricing guidance

If a one-time large project can be scheduled flexibly, estimate whether processing it within one calendar month would place eligible usage in a higher discount range. Do not shift processing to chase a threshold if doing so conflicts with latency, geography, security or reliability needs. The discount calculation is monthly, so usage split across calendar months should not be treated as one month’s total.

Decide whether reserved queues fit actual utilization

On-demand queues are the default, charge according to use, scale, and support all MediaConvert features. Reserved queues buy fixed transcoding capacity for a 12-month term and are billed whether busy or idle; they do not scale automatically and have feature limitations. AWS’s queue guide states: “With reserved queues, you pay for the transcoding capacity of the entire queue, regardless of how much or how little you use it.” Working with queues in AWS Elemental MediaConvert

Consideration On-demand queue Reserved queue
How charges work Based on use. Capacity for the queue is charged for the commitment, including idle time.
Capacity behavior Scalable. Fixed capacity; does not scale automatically.
Term No reserved-capacity term. 12-month commitment; AWS says purchased slots cannot be canceled and slot count cannot be reduced during the term.
Feature coverage Supports all MediaConvert features, according to AWS. Some job features are unavailable; check compatibility before estimating savings.

Model a reserved queue only after measuring typical job completion time, concurrency, demand variation and seasonality. AWS recommends simulating a typical job in an on-demand queue, then using the reserved queue calculator with observed completion time and the required turnaround time to estimate slots. Compare the full 12-month commitment with on-demand cost for the same workload, including idle periods. AWS reserved queue pricing and commitment details

  • HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
  • What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.

Check compatibility before doing that calculation: AWS lists 8K output, automated ABR, AV1 encoding, Dolby Vision, MV-HEVC spatial video, FrameFormer frame-rate conversion and accelerated transcoding among the features limited on reserved queues. Review the current reserved queue job settings limitations for the workflow you need.

Also review auto-renew settings and term end dates. AWS says an auto-renewal can start another 12-month commitment at the same price for the same slot count. If queue hopping is configured, check where each job actually runs: AWS bills according to the queue that processes it. A job that runs in a reserved queue is not billed at the on-demand rate, while a job that runs in an on-demand queue is charged at the on-demand rate. Reserved queue pricing

Attribute spend to jobs and workflows

For on-demand outputs, AWS supports cost allocation reporting through tags. Tags can be applied to jobs or reusable resources used to create them, including queues, job templates and output presets. Use a consistent naming convention—for example, by game, team or workflow—then activate the relevant cost allocation tags in Billing and Cost Management and configure a monthly cost allocation report. This makes it easier to identify where eligible MediaConvert spend is landing. AWS guide to cost allocation through tagging

Troubleshoot a bill that is higher than expected

  • Billable minutes exceed input duration: Count all outputs, including audio, and calculate duration times multiplier for each. A multi-rendition job processes more than the source once.
  • The estimate used a single per-minute rate: Recalculate with the applicable tier, Region, monthly usage and feature-dependent multiplier. The dated Ohio price example is not a general rate.
  • The workflow is in Professional rather than Basic: Recheck the encoding features and quality settings against the tier definitions and current pricing page; Professional also varies with quality setting.
  • An add-on increased processing charges: Inspect job settings and integrations for optional audio, HDR, frame conversion or watermarking charges, and retain only what the delivery requires.
  • Reserved capacity appears expensive despite low traffic: Compare utilization across the whole commitment, including idle time. Reserved capacity is charged whether used or not.
  • Jobs expected to use reserved capacity were billed on-demand: Inspect queue-hopping configuration and actual processing queue for each job.
  • A reserved-queue estimate does not match the intended job: Check feature limitations first; a workflow that needs a restricted feature may not be eligible for that queue.
  • Team or project costs are hard to separate: Apply tags consistently to jobs or the reusable resources that create them, activate the cost allocation tags, and review the monthly report.

If your goal is a 24/7 prerecorded YouTube channel
