Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteFor a stable 1080p stream, choose settings for the platform, codec, frame rate, motion in your game, upload capacity, and encoder—not resolution alone. On YouTube, the current recommended video bitrate is 14 Mbps for 1080p30 H.264 or 17 Mbps for 1080p60 H.264; AV1/HEVC recommendations are 10 Mbps and 12 Mbps, respectively. Treat these as ingest recommendations, test with representative gameplay and audio, and check stream health before going live.
What “Full HD” means for a live stream
Full HD usually means 1920×1080 pixels. It describes the image dimensions, not a complete streaming configuration: you still need to choose a frame rate, codec, bitrate, keyframe interval, audio settings, and an encoder that can sustain the workload.
1080p30 sends 30 frames per second; 1080p60 sends 60. The higher frame rate can make fast gameplay look smoother, but it also increases encoding and bandwidth demands. For slower-paced games, constrained hardware, or limited upload capacity, start with 1080p30. Try 1080p60 when motion smoothness matters and your platform, connection, and encoder can handle it.
YouTube Live settings for 1080p
YouTube’s published guidance, accessed in 2026, distinguishes bitrate by both codec and frame rate. These are recommended video bitrates for delivery to YouTube’s ingest servers, not guarantees that a connection will sustain a broadcast.

| Output | AV1 or HEVC recommended bitrate | H.264 recommended bitrate | YouTube minimums: AV1/HEVC; H.264 |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1080p30 | 10 Mbps | 14 Mbps | 4 Mbps; 5 Mbps |
| 1080p60 | 12 Mbps | 17 Mbps | 4 Mbps; 6 Mbps |
Use the bitrate for the codec you actually send. H.264 is a broadly documented baseline; AV1 and HEVC are options YouTube lists, but your encoder and delivery workflow must support the chosen codec. Do not assume a setting that works on YouTube is correct for another service.
Other YouTube encoder parameters
- Protocol: YouTube lists RTMP/RTMPS. It recommends RTMPS for encrypted delivery to Google’s servers.
- Rate control: Use CBR, as specified in YouTube’s encoder guidance.
- Keyframes: Set a two-second keyframe interval where your encoder allows it; YouTube says the interval must not exceed four seconds.
- Frame rate: YouTube supports up to 60 fps.
- Audio: YouTube lists AAC or MP3 and recommends 128 Kbps stereo audio.
- Resolution detection: Live Control Room recommends automatic resolution and frame-rate detection by default. Manual selection is available with a custom stream key.
Check YouTube’s current live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions before a broadcast, since platform guidance can change. YouTube advises choosing a quality that is reliable for your connection and testing before you start.

Choosing 30 or 60 fps, codec, and bitrate
Choose frame rate for the content and available headroom
For fast-moving games, 60 fps may show motion more smoothly. It also raises the demands on encoding and network delivery. Use 30 fps when smoother motion is less important or when your computer or connection cannot sustain 60 fps reliably. These are practical starting choices, not universal platform requirements.
Match the codec to platform and encoder support
Use a codec accepted by the destination and supported by your streaming software or hardware. A more efficient codec may reduce the bitrate needed for a given picture, but compatibility differs by platform and device. NVIDIA’s guide discusses platform support and advises checking the destination’s capabilities rather than assuming all services accept the same formats.

Do not treat example bitrate charts as universal rules
OBS Project’s 2017 x264 article gives 5,000–8,000 Kbps as an example range for 1920×1080 at 30 fps using the veryfast preset and low-to-medium motion. OBS notes that bitrate varies with resolution and frame rate; high-motion 1080p60 can need more than the example’s 8,000 Kbps, while low-motion scenes may need less. Use this chart as explanatory context, not as a replacement for the current platform’s ingest recommendations. See OBS Project’s x264 guidance.
How much upload speed do you need?
The relevant connection measure is stable upload capacity, not download speed. Your configured video bitrate is only part of the load: audio and network variation also matter, and other traffic on the connection can compete with the stream.

- Twitch’s streaming FAQ gives a rule of thumb of upload speed equal to your configured bitrate plus 30%: for example, allow headroom above the stream’s bitrate rather than matching it exactly.
- NVIDIA’s 2025 guide suggests using around 75% of measured upload speed for the stream bitrate. This is NVIDIA’s rule of thumb, not a platform requirement.
These are separate recommendations, not one agreed formula. Measure upload under realistic household or network conditions, and leave margin rather than targeting the full result of a single speed test. Consult Twitch’s streaming FAQ and NVIDIA’s NVENC OBS guide for their respective guidance.

In OBS, configure the output to match your destination’s requirements and the capability of your encoder. The important choices are output resolution, frame rate, codec, rate control, bitrate, keyframe interval, and audio settings. The exact menu labels vary with OBS version, encoder, and platform, so use the destination’s current specification for the values rather than copying settings from a different service.

Encoding can fail even when the connection is fast enough. OBS says an overloaded machine or encoder can cause skipped frames or a distorted stream and may show “Encoding overloaded!” If that happens, lower output resolution or FPS first, then reduce the encoder preset’s processing demand if needed. OBS explains that x264 presets trade CPU use against compression quality.
Pre-stream test and live monitoring
- Confirm the destination’s current settings. Identify the platform, supported codec, target frame rate, bitrate guidance, and keyframe requirements.
- Check your upload in realistic conditions. Test while the network is being used as it will be during the broadcast, and leave capacity beyond the configured stream bitrate.
- Run a safe test stream. Use a private or unlisted test where available, with gameplay motion and audio comparable to the real broadcast.
- Review platform stream health. Look for connection or ingest warnings, dropped frames, audio problems, and unstable delivery.
- Check encoder load in OBS. If OBS reports encoding overload or the picture skips or distorts, lower resolution or FPS, then reduce preset demand if necessary.
- Adjust one relevant setting and test again. If the network is unstable, lower bitrate to fit a reliable upload rate. If encoding is overloaded, reduce resolution, frame rate, or encoder workload instead of assuming the internet is at fault.
YouTube recommends a preflight test with representative audio and movement and monitoring stream health. Twitch’s Broadcasting Guidelines likewise discuss balancing bitrate, resolution, frame rate, internet speed, and hardware. Its page’s current specific bitrate table should be checked directly rather than inferred from YouTube settings.
Common 1080p streaming problems and fixes
- Buffering or disconnections: The configured bitrate may exceed stable upload capacity, or the network may be fluctuating. Reduce bitrate and retest under realistic network use; do not rely on a download-speed result.
- Dropped frames from network trouble: Check upload stability and competing traffic, then lower bitrate to a level the connection can sustain.
- “Encoding overloaded!” or visibly skipped/distorted frames: The encoder may not keep up with the selected settings. Lower output resolution or frame rate; if needed, choose a less demanding encoder preset.
- 1080p looks poor despite a high number: Check that the bitrate matches the selected codec and frame rate and that the platform is receiving the intended resolution. A 1080p label alone does not define the bitrate needed for a moving game.
- Settings work on one platform but not another: Platforms have their own ingest guidance and supported formats. Recheck the destination’s current specifications instead of carrying over a bitrate or codec assumption.
