How to Connect OBS Studio to AWS Media Services

AWS has separate OBS connection paths for IVS low-latency channels, IVS real-time stages, and MediaLive. Choose the destination first, then use its own endpoint and credentials.

To connect OBS Studio to AWS, first identify the destination: an Amazon IVS low-latency channel, an IVS real-time stage, or an AWS Elemental MediaLive input. Each uses different endpoints and credentials. For an IVS channel, select the Amazon IVS service in OBS and use that channel’s stream key; for an IVS real-time stage, use its ingest endpoint and configuration key in OBS’s Custom service; for MediaLive, follow the RTMP VPC push input’s own setup rather than reusing IVS details.

Choose the AWS destination before configuring OBS

“AWS Media Services” is an umbrella term, not a single OBS destination. Create and configure the AWS resource first; OBS cannot create a channel, stage, or MediaLive input just by starting a stream. Use the endpoint and credentials generated for the exact resource you intend to publish to.

Destination Use it for OBS connection path
Amazon IVS low-latency channel A channel broadcast Choose Amazon IVS in OBS and use the channel’s details; AWS also documents an SRT setup.
Amazon IVS real-time stage A participant publishing to a real-time stage Choose Custom in OBS and enter the stage ingest endpoint and ingest configuration key.
AWS Elemental MediaLive A MediaLive workflow receiving an RTMP VPC push input Use the input’s own endpoint and credentials after its VPC and role setup.

Do not apply one product’s endpoint format, protocol, or encoder limits to another. The OBS source—such as a game capture, display, webcam, or capture card—creates the program OBS sends; it is not a requirement for connecting to AWS. See the OBS Project overview guide for OBS’s standard streaming setup.

Connect OBS to an Amazon IVS low-latency channel

AWS’s documented OBS walkthrough is for RTMPS and uses OBS Studio v30.2 or later. It recommends a two-second keyframe interval. The precise channel setup and available connection details are shown for that channel, so do not substitute a sample endpoint or another channel’s key.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  1. Create or select the IVS low-latency channel in AWS. Open the channel’s details and locate its ingest server and stream key. Keep the key private: anyone who obtains it may be able to publish to your channel.
  2. Open OBS’s stream settings. Go to Settings > Stream. Select the Amazon IVS service option and enter the channel-specific connection details as prompted by OBS.
  3. Set the encoder keyframe interval to two seconds. In the output or encoder settings, configure the keyframe interval as AWS recommends for this documented low-latency channel setup.
  4. Check the preview, then start streaming. Confirm the intended OBS scenes and audio sources are active. Start streaming and verify that the channel receives the program in the AWS IVS console.

AWS also documents SRT for IVS low-latency channels. For that setup, select Custom in OBS. Put the SRT endpoint, port, stream ID, and applicable passphrase into the server field using the values and format provided for the channel; leave OBS’s separate Stream Key field empty. Follow the channel-specific AWS console or CLI output. Do not assume an RTMPS address or stream key can be repurposed as SRT details. AWS’s IVS OBS setup guide covers the documented RTMPS and SRT paths.

Connect OBS to an Amazon IVS real-time stage

For a real-time stage, create an ingest configuration associated with the stage before opening OBS. AWS recommends RTMPS. The ingest configuration’s insecureIngest setting defaults to false, so RTMP is not accepted unless you deliberately enable insecure ingest.

  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
  1. Create the stage and its ingest configuration. In AWS, associate an ingest configuration with the target stage, then copy that configuration’s endpoint and stream key. These are distinct from a low-latency channel’s credentials.
  2. Choose the custom server in OBS. Go to Settings > Stream, set Service to Custom, and enter the stage’s RTMP or RTMPS endpoint in Server.
  3. Enter the ingest configuration key. Paste the corresponding key into Stream Key. Use RTMPS unless you have a specific reason and have explicitly configured RTMP.
  4. Configure the real-time encoder limits. Set H.264 video, disable B-frames, keep resolution at or below 720p, and keep video bitrate at or below 8.5 Mbps. AWS recommends a one- or two-second keyframe interval and encoder settings such as veryfast and zerolatency.
  5. Leave headroom below the bitrate ceiling. Encoders can briefly exceed their target bitrate. AWS’s example is a 6 Mbps maximum, below the 8.5 Mbps service limit; this is an example, not a universal required target.
  6. Start the stream and check the stage. Confirm that both audio and video tracks are present and that the stage receives the intended participant stream.

These 720p, bitrate, H.264, and no-B-frame requirements are for IVS real-time RTMP ingest, not universal limits for every AWS video service. Read AWS’s current IVS RTMP Publishing documentation and real-time stream ingest limits when configuring this route.

Connect OBS to AWS Elemental MediaLive

MediaLive is a separate workflow from IVS. AWS documents an RTMP VPC push input, which involves VPC configuration and a role for MediaLive to assume. Set up the MediaLive input and use the endpoint and credentials belonging to that input; IVS instructions do not provide MediaLive connection details.

  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
  1. Prepare the AWS networking and permissions. Configure the VPC requirements for the RTMP push input and the role MediaLive must assume.
  2. Create the RTMP VPC push input. Use the input’s own setup in MediaLive and record the generated connection details.
  3. Enter those details in OBS. Go to Settings > Stream, choose Custom if required by the input workflow, and enter the MediaLive input’s server and stream key exactly as provided.
  4. Start OBS and verify reception in MediaLive. If the input does not receive the stream, check the VPC and role configuration as well as the input-specific endpoint and credentials.

Consult AWS’s MediaLive RTMP VPC push input documentation for its resource-specific configuration.

Protect credentials and verify the signal

  • Keep stream keys and passphrases secret. Do not show them in a screen share, publish them in a game stream, or place them in public notes. If a credential is exposed, replace or rotate it using the AWS resource’s controls.
  • Check the destination, not just OBS. OBS showing that it is streaming does not prove the intended AWS channel, stage, or input is receiving a valid signal.
  • Confirm audio and video separately. Check that the correct OBS scene is active and that the output includes the audio and video tracks expected by the selected AWS product.
  • Respect content rights on YouTube distribution. AWS ingest does not grant rights to broadcast game footage, music, or other third-party material. If you also send the program to YouTube, follow the applicable copyright rules and platform policies.

Troubleshoot common connection failures

Symptom Likely cause What to check
OBS cannot connect or the destination receives no stream Wrong AWS product path, endpoint, or credentials Confirm whether the resource is an IVS channel, real-time stage, or MediaLive input. Copy the endpoint and key from that exact resource and check for extra spaces.
RTMP is rejected for an IVS real-time stage Insecure ingest is disabled by default Use the recommended RTMPS endpoint, or deliberately enable RTMP only if the workflow requires it and AWS configuration permits it.
SRT connection fails Incorrect URL components or a key entered in the wrong field Use the channel’s SRT endpoint, port, stream ID, and applicable passphrase in OBS’s server field; leave the separate stream-key field empty for this documented setup.
IVS real-time stream is rejected or unstable Encoder format or settings exceed real-time ingest constraints Use H.264 without B-frames, no more than 720p, keep video bitrate within the 8.5 Mbps maximum with headroom, and include both audio and video.
MediaLive input does not receive a push VPC, assumed role, or input-specific setup is incomplete Review the RTMP VPC push input’s network and role configuration, then verify that OBS uses that input’s own endpoint and credentials.
OBS is streaming but the wrong program or silent audio arrives Incorrect scene, source, or audio routing Check OBS’s active scene, source visibility, and audio meters before restarting the AWS stream.
