Keep your display at its native resolution and start with 3D Resolution at 100%; lower it gradually only if performance still falls short. These settings can reduce visual quality, and the right balance depends on your PC and whether you value frame rate, smooth delivery, responsiveness, or image detail most.
Start with Epic’s performance-first settings
Epic Games’ 2026 competitive PC guide offers a useful baseline, not a universal best preset. Its choices aim to reduce rendering load and support competitive play:

Epic describes Performance Mode this way: “These settings use DirectX 12 and disable ‘most rendering features to reduce memory usage and lighten the load on CPU and GPU.’” The trade-off is visual fidelity: lower settings can make the game look less detailed. To change it, open Video → Rendering Mode → Performance, apply the change, and restart Fortnite if prompted. Epic’s competitive PC settings guide is the source for this baseline; menu labels may change with updates.
Choose resolution and frame pacing for your display
Keep native resolution first
Epic recommends your monitor’s native resolution. Begin at 100% 3D Resolution, then reduce it in 10% increments only if the frame rate is still below your target. Lower 3D Resolution can improve performance by rendering fewer pixels, but it also softens the image. Compare changes in the same kind of scene or match so that differences in gameplay do not mislead you.

Set a frame cap when uncapped play tears
Epic’s guide recommends an in-game frame-rate limit and says to match it to your monitor’s refresh rate if uncapped rendering produces tearing. Epic Support currently lists 360 FPS as the PC in-game cap; that limit can change, so check the current menu rather than assuming it is fixed. A cap is a pacing choice, not a guarantee that the PC can sustain that rate.
Understand what refresh rate can—and cannot—do
A monitor’s refresh rate limits how many frames it can display each second; it does not make the PC render more frames. Epic notes that gaming monitors at 120 Hz, 144 Hz, or higher can take advantage of higher display rates. A high-refresh-rate monitor is relevant if your current screen is the bottleneck, but buying one by itself is not an FPS fix: the PC must supply the frames first. Decide whether image quality or frame rate matters more
If you want a clearer image and your PC has headroom, raise settings gradually rather than treating the competitive preset as objectively best. Epic’s graphics troubleshooting advice is to start with Quality Presets at Low and 3D Resolution at 100% when diagnosing performance, then raise options step by step until you find an acceptable balance. If you are already near your performance target, increasing detail may cost frame rate or smoothness.
Compare upscaling options on your own system
Depending on hardware and the options currently available in your game, Fortnite may offer TSR, NVIDIA DLSS, Intel XeSS, FXAA, SMAA, or TAA. Super-resolution options can render fewer pixels and reconstruct the output, trading some native image detail for performance. There is no single best option established for every GPU: check the in-game descriptions and compare available choices in the same scene, looking at both clarity and frame rate. Epic’s support article says AMD FSR is not currently an in-game option; because support can change, verify the options shown in your current version of Fortnite.

Epic cautions that low-FPS fixes depend on the computer: “Your experience in Fortnite is entirely dependent on what type of hardware you’re using, and the steps below may only improve your performance slightly or not change anything at all.” Before lowering every setting, check that the machine meets the game’s requirements, that Fortnite is using the intended GPU, and that the installation is healthy.

Try the low-risk checks first
- Close unnecessary background applications; Epic says multiple running apps can reduce Fortnite performance.
- On a laptop or multi-GPU PC, make sure Fortnite is assigned to the high-performance dedicated GPU rather than integrated graphics.
- Verify the game’s installation files before assuming a graphics option is the cause.
- If DirectX 12 causes crashes, freezes, or a black screen, Epic says Performance Mode may help.

Consider memory or storage only when the symptoms fit
Epic says older machines may have fewer hitches and stutters when Fortnite runs from an SSD or the system has 6 GB RAM or higher. This is a possible improvement, not a guaranteed FPS increase. If the issue is a consistently low frame rate, changing settings or resolving a hardware bottleneck may matter more than storage alone.
Performance Mode users can also remove high-resolution textures to save storage space, as described in Epic’s Performance Mode instructions. Epic’s published storage estimates vary, so check the current launcher and support information for the amount applicable to your installation.
