First identify which frames are being lost: OBS connection-dropped frames point to a network delivery problem, while rendering or encoding lag points to a local performance problem. Check OBS statistics and YouTube Live Control Room stream health before changing settings; the right fix depends on which signal is rising.
Diagnose the kind of frame loss first
In OBS, open the Stats window and watch its counters while the problem is happening. Connection-dropped frames, rendering lag, and encoding lag are different symptoms and call for different remedies. YouTube also recommends checking the encoder’s errors and CPU load, the Live Control Room health indicators, and a local recording where available. If the local recording itself looks or sounds bad, examine the sources and encoder performance; if the local output is healthy but delivery falters, focus on the network path. OBS connection troubleshooting and YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guide explain these diagnostic distinctions.
| What you see | Evidence to check | Fix direction |
|---|---|---|
| Connection-dropped frames rising | OBS connection status and counter, upload stability, and YouTube stream health | Stabilize the connection and use a bitrate it can sustain |
| Rendering or encoding lag rising | OBS performance statistics, CPU/GPU load, sources, and local recording | Reduce scene, game, encoder, or output workload |
| Viewers report buffering, but broadcaster counters stay clear | Whether the issue affects one viewer, several viewers on different networks, or viewers sharing one network | Investigate playback devices and viewer networks before changing encoder settings |
OBS describes its connection-dropped-frame category as a network issue between the computer and the remote stream ingest server. That does not mean every stutter a viewer reports is broadcaster-side: playback buffering can occur on a viewer’s device or connection even when the broadcaster is not dropping frames. One viewer’s report may reflect their own device or network; reports from viewers on different networks are stronger evidence of a broadcaster-side issue, while several affected viewers on the same network may share a local problem.
Fix connection-dropped frames
1. Check sustained upload capacity and reduce bitrate if needed
Run an upload speed test, but do not treat one peak result as proof that the connection can reliably sustain a live stream. YouTube says the total stream bitrate must fit within available upload bandwidth and recommends leaving 20% headroom. Include a backup stream in the total if you use one. Reduce the configured video bitrate until the stream remains stable on your actual connection. OBS’s connection guide offers 75% of total upload speed as a starting heuristic, not a guaranteed limit or YouTube rule; use observed stability and YouTube’s headroom recommendation to select a sustainable setting. See YouTube’s encoder settings guidance and the OBS connection guide.
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
2. Prefer a wired connection and isolate network faults
- Use Ethernet instead of Wi-Fi when feasible. Wi-Fi can be unstable for a continuous stream.
- Temporarily test without a VPN or security software if either could be interfering with the connection.
- Check network-prioritization utilities that may deprioritize OBS. OBS gives Lenovo Vantage Network Boost and Killer NIC software as examples, not an exhaustive list.
- Update network drivers from your computer or motherboard manufacturer if they are outdated.
- Restart the modem and router as a diagnostic step. If the issue remains, check cables and network devices methodically, then contact your ISP to investigate the route or service.
A faulty cable, router, modem, network card, switch, or extender can affect delivery, but replacing hardware is not a fix for every connection problem. Isolate the fault before buying anything; a new cable, for example, cannot resolve ISP congestion or local encoding lag.
3. Treat advanced network settings as tests, not universal fixes
OBS’s troubleshooting guide also discusses network optimizations, TCP pacing, default IP binding, IPv4-only testing, and dynamic bitrate adjustment. Availability can vary by OBS version and operating system, so verify that a control exists in your current version before following an interface path. Dynamic bitrate may reduce quality to keep a stream going; it can be useful as a fallback, but it does not repair the underlying network fault.

Fix rendering or encoding lag
Rendering lag means OBS is struggling to composite the scene; encoding lag means it cannot encode frames quickly enough. A game using nearly all available GPU capacity, a complex scene, or a demanding output setting can leave too little headroom for OBS. These performance symptoms are not repaired by lowering bitrate alone if the bottleneck is local processing.
- On Windows, try running OBS as administrator as a diagnostic for GPU overload.
- Close other GPU-intensive applications while streaming.
- Cap the game’s frame rate or enable V-Sync; lower demanding in-game graphics settings if necessary.
- Reduce OBS output resolution or frame rate. If 60 fps is not stable, test 30 fps.
- Simplify scenes and sources if the problem persists. Demanding browser sources and filters can add load; use appropriately sized media rather than oversized source files where lower-resolution media is sufficient.
Make one change at a time and check the OBS counters again under representative load. Reducing game or scene load addresses rendering and encoding pressure; it will not correct an unstable upload route.

Choose YouTube encoder settings for reliable delivery
There is no single bitrate that suits every stream: YouTube’s recommendations vary by resolution and frame rate. Select the row for your intended output from the current YouTube encoder settings table, then make sure your upload connection can sustain the total bitrate with headroom. YouTube’s guidance lists CBR, H.264, H.265, and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS, frame rates up to 60 fps, and a recommended keyframe interval of 2 seconds; do not exceed 4 seconds. These are platform recommendations, not a reason to choose settings your computer or connection cannot reliably deliver.
Before an important stream, test with movement and audio similar to the planned broadcast. Watch OBS statistics and YouTube stream health, and review the local recording where available. Update encoder software and check the quality of audio and video sources routed into it if the output itself is faulty. YouTube’s settings and troubleshooting help pages do not show publication dates, so consult the current guidance when configuring a new encoder version.
