For an OBS workflow, choose based on what you need the file to do: use MKV for a recording you want to protect against an interrupted save, then remux it to MP4 if your editor or delivery workflow needs MP4. OBS can load either format as a Media Source for prerecorded playback. The container alone does not guarantee compatibility: check the codecs inside the file and rehearse it in your full streaming setup.
MKV vs. MP4: what matters for prerecorded streams
MKV and MP4 are containers: they hold video and audio streams, which use their own codecs. For prerecorded live streaming, that means two separate questions: will the file survive a recording interruption, and will OBS, your editor, and the destination platform accept the file’s particular codecs and container?

OBS calls MKV its default container and recommends it for most use cases because it can be remuxed into a more compatible format. Read the OBS Audio/Video Formats Guide for the documented container and codec combinations. H.264 is described there as broadly playable, and AAC as widely used, but a destination’s stated requirements take precedence.
Can OBS play an MKV file as a Media Source?
Yes. OBS documents both .mkv and .mp4 among the video file extensions supported by Media Source. Media Source also provides controls for looping and restarting playback when the source is shown. See OBS Media Sources.

For a prerecorded live show, add the media as a source in the scene you intend to use, then set the playback behavior deliberately. Verify picture, audio, and the transition or restart behavior in a rehearsal; a file opening in OBS does not establish that its codecs or playback will work correctly in every editor or destination.
How to record in MKV and make an MP4 copy in OBS
- Choose a recording format. In OBS, open Settings > Output and set the recording format to MKV. OBS’s Standard Recording Output Guide recommends MKV because a recording is less likely to be lost in full if OBS or the computer cannot stop recording gracefully.
- Record and confirm completion. Stop the recording normally when possible, then check that the MKV exists and plays. MKV improves the chance of recovering an interrupted recording; it is not a guarantee against every storage, file-system, or media failure.
- Remux if the next step needs MP4. In OBS, open File > Remux Recordings, select the MKV recording, and start remuxing. OBS also offers an option to remux recordings automatically after recording stops. Remuxing changes the container; it does not require encoding the video again.
- Test the output in its destination. Open the MP4 in the editor or playback setup that will actually use it. Confirm that video and audio play as expected. Remuxing cannot make an unsupported codec compatible, and platform-specific ingest requirements vary.
When to choose each option
Choose MKV as the recording master
If a long recording would be costly to repeat, MKV is the safer OBS recording choice. Keep it as the master, and create an MP4 through OBS remuxing only when a later step requires that container.

Choose regular MP4 for a compatible handoff
If the workflow specifically requires MP4 and you are recording directly to that format, understand the trade-off: OBS warns that an interruption before finalization can leave a regular MP4 unrecoverable. Where practical, recording to MKV first and remuxing afterward avoids making the recording depend on that finalization step.
Consider OBS hybrid formats only when the setup supports them
OBS introduced Hybrid MP4 in version 30.2 and Hybrid MOV in version 32.0. OBS describes them as fragmented formats that are soft-remuxed on completion. Hybrid MP4 supports AV1; Hybrid MOV supports ProRes. Check your installed OBS version, the codec you plan to use, and your editor’s support before choosing one. Compatibility checks before a prerecorded stream
- Check both container and codec. A file ending in
.mkvor.mp4can still contain video or audio encoded in a way a particular editor or destination does not accept. - Test the exact file, not just a short substitute. Load the intended file in the OBS scene and play it through the planned stream setup. Confirm sound as well as picture.
- Set looping and restart behavior intentionally. A source that should repeat needs the appropriate Media Source playback controls; confirm what happens at the end and when the source is shown again.
- Check the destination’s current requirements. This topic does not identify a specific platform, so there is no single platform ingest specification to apply. Follow the requirements for your actual destination.
- Review rights and platform rules. Having a playable file does not establish that you have rights to its audio or video, or that repeating it complies with the destination’s rules for live and reused content. Confirm permission and applicable platform policies before streaming.
Common problems and fixes
The MP4 does not open after an interrupted recording
Regular MP4 may require finalization. If the recording was made in OBS as MKV, try the MKV; OBS says an unfinished MKV remains playable and recoverable after an interruption. For future recordings where interruption risk matters, record as MKV and remux after stopping.
The MKV plays in OBS but not in the editor
The editor may have weaker MKV support or may not accept the embedded codecs. Use OBS’s File > Remux Recordings workflow to make an MP4 copy, then check whether the editor accepts the result. Remuxing does not convert the codecs.

The remuxed MP4 still fails in the destination
Changing the container cannot fix a codec mismatch. Check the destination’s precise format requirements and compare them with the file’s video and audio codecs; then choose a supported recording or export configuration.
Playback does not repeat as expected
Check the Media Source loop and restart controls, and rehearse the transition at the end of the file and when the source becomes visible again. The source’s playback settings, rather than its MKV or MP4 extension, determine this behavior.
