OBS Studio is the best starting point for most creators who want custom scene transitions. It is free, open source, works on Windows, macOS and Linux, and supports adjustable transitions, hotkeys, Studio Mode preview and user-supplied stinger videos. Choose Streamlabs Desktop if you specifically want its documented Motion Effect to animate sources between scenes; consider Wirecast for a larger, multicamera or remote-guest production.

Pick the effect you actually need before choosing an application: a simple cut or fade, a wipe or slide, a branded stinger, or animated movement of sources between scenes. Then consider your operating system, computer capacity, number and type of sources, whether you need remote guests or multiview, and how much setup control you want.
What counts as a custom scene transition?
A scene is a layout of sources, such as a game or window capture, camera, image, text or display capture. A transition controls how the live output changes from one scene to another. “Custom” can mean choosing and tuning a built-in effect, adding a video stinger, or animating scene elements; those are distinct workflows.
Built-in transitions
OBS’s overview guide lists Fade and Cut as available from first launch, with Swipe, Slide, Fade to color and Luma Wipe among additional choices. You can configure duration and Quick Transitions. The guide may lag current releases, so check the options in your installed version.

Stinger video transitions
In OBS, a stinger is a video file you supply and configure as a transition. It is useful for a branded animation, but you need to create or obtain that asset separately and set it up in OBS.
Animated source movement
Streamlabs Desktop’s Motion Effect animates the position of sources shared between two scenes. A source that appears in only one of the two scenes zooms in or out. Streamlabs published its instructions for this behavior on April 25, 2025.

How to set up custom transitions in OBS
- Build your scenes. Add the sources needed for each layout, such as game capture, camera, text, images or display capture. Name scenes clearly so you can identify them while live.
- Open the transition controls. In OBS, use the Scene Transitions controls to choose a transition. The overview guide identifies Fade and Cut as initial choices and describes additional types such as Swipe, Slide, Fade to color and Luma Wipe.
- Set the duration. Adjust the transition duration to suit the visual pace. A cut changes immediately; a longer fade or wipe makes the change more gradual.
- Add a stinger if you have a transition video. Select the stinger transition type, choose your video asset and configure its transition point and related options in OBS. The video itself is your supplied asset, not something OBS creates automatically.
- Set up Quick Transitions and hotkeys if useful. Quick Transitions provide a direct way to trigger selected changes in Studio Mode; hotkeys can switch to a specific scene. The exact controls can vary by OBS version.
- Preview before going live. Studio Mode lets you prepare or adjust a scene in preview before sending it to the live output. Test every scene and transition before your first broadcast.
A programmable Stream Deck is an optional physical way to trigger scene hotkeys if you switch layouts frequently. It does not create transition effects, and a keyboard shortcut is sufficient if you prefer not to add hardware. Elgato describes Stream Deck integration with streaming software at its streaming software overview.
How to use Motion Effect in Streamlabs Desktop
- Create the two scenes that will participate in the transition.
- Include the source in both scenes if you want it to move between positions. The documented effect animates sources shared across the two scenes.
- Place the shared source differently in each scene to define the movement.
- Use a source present in only one scene when you want the documented zoom-in or zoom-out behavior instead.
- Preview the change and adjust scene composition before using it on a live broadcast.

Match settings to your computer and stream
Transitions are only one part of the workload. Resolution, frame rate, encoder, scene complexity and source count all affect what your computer must handle. OBS warns that 60 fps can be much more taxing than 30 fps; compatible system specifications alone do not guarantee a successful stream.
- Test at your intended output settings. A scene that previews smoothly may behave differently once encoding and all sources are active.
- Reduce load when frames drop. Consider lowering frame rate or resolution, simplifying scenes, or changing encoder settings if your system cannot sustain the chosen setup.
- Use vendor guidance as guidance, not a promise. Streamlabs recommends Windows 10 or macOS 10.15 and higher, 16 GB or more RAM, and Ethernet. Its support page gives 3.6 Mbps or better as a typical upload-speed guide for 720p at 30 fps on most platforms. These are Streamlabs recommendations, not universal minimums or guarantees.

Common transition and streaming problems
The custom stinger does not appear
Check that the intended stinger transition is selected and that its video asset is available to OBS. A stinger requires a user-provided video file; choosing a built-in transition will not use that file.
The scene changes, but the effect is abrupt
Verify the selected transition and its duration. A Cut is immediate by design; choose a gradual transition and adjust its duration if you want a smoother change.

A Streamlabs source does not animate between scenes
Confirm that the source exists in both scenes and that its position differs between them. The documented Motion Effect behavior applies to shared sources; a source found in only one scene zooms in or out instead.
The stream struggles when transitions or scenes are active
Check output frame rate, resolution, encoder and scene complexity. OBS notes that 60 fps can impose substantially more load than 30 fps, and actual capability varies by system and settings. Test changes before broadcasting.
