For screen capture software with multiple file formats, compare still-image outputs separately from screen-recording and animation formats—and check whether each format is an editable capture or project file or only an export option. TechSmith Snagit supports documented image, video, and other formats on Windows and macOS. ShareX is a free, open-source Windows option with a video converter that can produce several video and animated formats, but conversion requires a configured FFmpeg executable.
What to check before choosing a capture format
- Separate images from video. PNG, JPG, and TIFF are image formats; MP4, WebM, MKV, and AVI are video containers. GIF, WebP, and APNG can carry animation. A tool’s support for one category does not establish support for the others.
- Check what “supports” means. A program may capture or save a working file in one format and export a copy to another. An export target is not necessarily an editable source file.
- Check the workflow and platform. Consider whether you need annotation, hotkeys, clipboard use, upload actions, or conversion, and confirm the program supports your operating system.
TechSmith Snagit: capture, annotation, and multiple outputs
TechSmith lists Snagit for Windows and macOS. Its documented formats span still images, video, web or document output, and tool-specific or graphics formats. TechSmith marks PDF, CUR, and EPS as export-only, so those should not be treated as native editable capture formats.
Formats listed by TechSmith
| Use | Formats | What to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| Images | BMP, GIF, ICO, JPG, PNG, TIF, PSD, TGA, RAS, WPG | The list identifies image formats; it does not mean every format is a native working file. |
| Video | MP4 | Snagit’s listed video format is MP4. |
| Other listed formats | MHT, SNAG, EMF, WMF, WFX | These include web, tool-specific, and graphics formats; check the current documentation for the particular release and the role of each format. |
| Export-only | PDF, CUR, EPS | TechSmith identifies these as export-only, not editable capture formats. |
Snagit is a better fit when the job centers on capturing and annotating screenshots, creating instructional material, and sharing results. Confirm the current format list for the release you plan to use; product documentation can change.
ShareX: configurable capture and video conversion
ShareX is a free, open-source Windows program for screenshots, screen recording, annotation, saving, upload workflows, and utilities. Its project documentation describes configurable capture actions, hotkeys, and after-capture workflows. The converter documentation lists multiple video and animated outputs:

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
| Output type | Formats or codec/container pairing |
|---|---|
| Video | H.264 or H.265 as MP4; VP8 or VP9 as WebM; AV1 as MKV; MPEG-4 as AVI |
| Animation | GIF, WebP, or APNG |
ShareX conversion requires a configured FFmpeg executable. The presence of a format or encoder option in the documentation does not guarantee that every installation can use every encoder: availability can depend on the FFmpeg build, hardware, and drivers. Treat setup and encoder availability as part of the choice, rather than assuming conversion will work immediately after installation.
Snagit or ShareX?
| Need | Better-aligned option | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Windows and macOS support | Snagit | TechSmith lists both operating systems; ShareX is described as Windows software. |
| Screenshot annotation and a guided sharing workflow | Snagit | Review the exact format role—especially whether you need a native working file or an export. |
| Configurable hotkeys, after-capture actions, and utilities | ShareX | Its conversion workflow needs FFmpeg configuration, and encoder availability varies. |
| Several video containers or animated outputs | ShareX converter | Check FFmpeg and encoder support on your own system before relying on a particular output. |
| MP4 screen recording alongside screenshots | Snagit | MP4 is the video format in TechSmith’s documented list; the list also contains many image and other formats. |

Choose the format for what happens next
- For screenshots you will edit or annotate elsewhere: check whether the chosen image format preserves the content and editability your next tool needs. Do not assume an export-only format is a working source file.
- For sharing a screen recording: MP4 is listed for Snagit; ShareX documents several conversion targets, including MP4 and WebM. Confirm the receiving platform or editor accepts your chosen container and encoding.
- For a short looping visual: ShareX documents GIF, WebP, and APNG animated outputs. Check the target app’s support and any practical size constraints before converting.
- For an archive or handoff: retain the original capture or recording when later edits matter, and keep a separate exported copy for delivery. A converted output may not preserve the editability of the source.
Common format and conversion problems
The format appears in a list, but the file is not editable
Check whether it is a native capture or project format, or an export-only destination. For Snagit, TechSmith marks PDF, CUR, and EPS as export-only.
ShareX does not offer the expected encoder
Verify that FFmpeg is configured and that the installed FFmpeg build includes the encoder. Hardware and drivers can also affect which encoder options are available.

A converted video will not open in the target application
Check both the container and the encoding, not just the filename extension. For example, ShareX documentation associates H.264/H.265 with MP4, VP8/VP9 with WebM, AV1 with MKV, and MPEG-4 with AVI. Confirm the target application accepts that combination.
The tool does not run on your computer
Verify operating-system support before installing: TechSmith lists Snagit for Windows and macOS, while ShareX is a Windows program.

When a captured video needs to stay live on YouTube
Screen capture software records or exports content; it is not the same as a service that continuously broadcasts an uploaded recording. If your separate goal is to keep a YouTube channel live with a prerecorded video, StreamNeo is a cloud service for looping uploaded videos on YouTube, not a screen recorder. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. The cloud keeps it running without leaving a computer on, and it can recover automatically if YouTube drops the stream. The same slot supports the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot; the first day is free with no card. See the StreamNeo plans, or start a free day.
