If OBS Studio closes or freezes during a Windows 10 stream, first establish whether it actually crashed: lag, dropped frames, encoder overload, and a blank capture have different troubleshooting paths. For a genuine crash, start by closing graphics overlays and capture utilities, then test OBS in Safe Mode. Change one thing at a time and reproduce the trigger so you can identify what helped.
First, confirm what “crash” means
Note what you see when the problem happens. OBS closing unexpectedly or showing a crash/error report is different from OBS remaining open while the preview freezes, the stream stutters, frames drop, or a capture source turns black. Dropped frames point toward network stability or bitrate; rendering or encoding lag points toward performance. Those symptoms alone do not prove OBS crashed. - OBS closes or reports an application error: begin with graphics-hook conflicts and third-party OBS components.
- OBS stays open but video stutters or rendering/encoding lags: use the performance checks below.
- Only one capture is blank: investigate that source or capture compatibility; a blank source by itself is not evidence of an application crash.
- The stream drops frames but OBS remains responsive: check network stability and bitrate rather than treating it as a crash.
Fix a genuine OBS crash: work through these checks
Reproduce the same action after each change—for example, opening a particular scene, starting the stream, or opening a file dialog. Keep a note of what you changed and restore it if it makes no difference.
1. Close graphics overlays and competing capture tools
Third-party software that hooks graphics functions OBS also uses can cause crashes or unusual behavior. Close overlays, on-screen displays, other game-capture or recording software, and similar utilities, then repeat the action that caused the crash. OBS lists examples including MSI Afterburner, RivaTuner, EVGA Precision, Discord or other voice-app overlays, and competing capture/recording software in its known application conflicts guide.

One exception in that guide is D3DGear: it installs global DirectX hooks, so closing it may not be enough; OBS says it must be uninstalled to test whether it is responsible. OBS also associates Dell Backup & Recovery / Alienware Alien Respawn with crashes when OBS opens a Browse dialog. If that is your trigger, test the conflict rather than changing unrelated stream settings.
2. Run OBS in Safe Mode to isolate extensions
Safe Mode starts OBS without third-party plugins, scripts, and websockets. If the crash stops in Safe Mode, a third-party component becomes a plausible cause; re-enable components selectively and retest until you isolate the conflict. Safe Mode is a diagnostic test, not a permanent fix if you rely on an extension.

- Close OBS.
- Find the OBS shortcut, right-click it, and open Properties.
- In Target, add a space after the quoted
obs64.exepath, then add--safe-mode. Keep the existing path and quotation marks intact. - Apply the change and launch OBS with that shortcut. When finished testing, remove the parameter to return to normal startup.
OBS documents this launch parameter, along with --verbose for more detailed logs, in its Launch Parameters guide. You can use the same shortcut method with --verbose when collecting diagnostic detail.
3. Check Windows 10 Game DVR and capture settings
OBS’s Windows Gaming Features Troubleshooting guidance recommends turning off Game DVR/background captures because they can conflict with hardware encoding such as NVENC and consume resources. The Settings path depends on the Windows 10 version: look under Settings > Gaming > Game DVR or Settings > Gaming > Captures, then turn off background recording/capture options.

Do not automatically disable Game Mode. OBS says Windows 10 version 1809 or newer can leave Game Mode on; older builds may need it disabled. Enter winver in Start search to check your Windows version before following version-specific advice. OBS’s older-build guidance includes registry changes; registry edits can affect Windows behavior, so do not make them casually or apply them to a newer build without a reason.
4. For a laptop, verify which GPU OBS uses
If your laptop has both integrated and high-power graphics, OBS recommends leaving OBS on the high-power GPU. This is not a universal crash fix. The OBS display-capture guide’s newer GPU-assignment method applies to Windows 10 version 1903 or later and OBS 27 or later; it is specifically a display-capture compatibility detail. Check the OBS laptop troubleshooting guide before changing GPU assignment, especially if the problem is a black display capture rather than OBS closing.

If OBS stays open: troubleshoot rendering or encoding overload
These steps are for performance trouble—such as render lag or encoder overload—not proof that overload caused an application crash. Change one setting, test the same scene and stream conditions, then continue only if needed. OBS’s Encoding Performance Troubleshooting guide recommends the following checks:
- Run OBS as administrator. This can help OBS obtain the resources it needs.
- Close other GPU-heavy programs. Games, editors, browsers with demanding content, and other rendering workloads can compete for GPU capacity.
- Reduce game load. Cap the game’s frame rate or enable V-Sync, and lower its graphics settings if the GPU is saturated.
- Lower OBS output demand. Reduce output resolution or frame rate. If 60 fps is not working reliably, test 30 fps.
- Simplify scenes. Temporarily remove unnecessary sources and filters, and test browser sources separately; complex scenes add rendering work.
OBS’s system requirements page lists Windows 10 and a DirectX 10.1-compatible GPU, but those minimum compatibility requirements do not promise that a particular computer can sustain a given stream. Collect the details needed to diagnose a crash that persists
There is no single fix that can be identified without evidence from the affected system. If the isolation steps do not resolve it, collect the following before asking for help:
- The exact OBS error text, if one appears, and whether OBS closes, hangs, or only stops rendering.
- The action that reliably triggers the issue and whether it happens in Safe Mode.
- Your OBS version and Windows 10 build (check with
winver). - Your GPU model and graphics-driver version.
- The OBS log and any crash report associated with the incident.
These details help distinguish a plugin conflict, a Windows capture interaction, and a performance problem. The general OBS guidance cited here does not establish a universal interpretation for every crash log, so avoid assuming a diagnosis from one symptom.
