How do I make a YouTube thumbnail for a product review?
- Choose the review point. Decide what a viewer should recognize at a glance: the product, a specific feature you test, or the practical outcome of your review. Keep the image faithful to what the video actually covers.
- Capture options during the shoot. YouTube recommends taking pictures while filming so you have several candidates when it is time to upload. Try different angles or framing while keeping the product visible. A phone tripod can help steady a shot, but it is optional.
- Keep the composition simple. Make the product the visual focus. Use color and composition to attract attention without crowding the frame. If you add words, keep them brief and large enough to read on a small screen.
- Check the image at a small size. Preview the draft as a small thumbnail. Can you still identify the product and read any text? Is the image relevant to the audience for the review? Remove decorative elements that compete with the product or obscure what the video shows.
- Compare drafts before choosing. Consider product visibility, small-screen legibility, audience relevance, accuracy, and whether the images differ meaningfully. A change in color or crop alone may not test a distinct idea.
YouTube says that 90% of the best-performing videos have custom thumbnails, but the cited help page does not state a publication year. Treat that as YouTube’s cited statistic, not a current guarantee that a custom image will improve any individual review’s results. What size should a YouTube thumbnail be?
For a standard video, YouTube recommends a 16:9 image at 3840 × 2160 pixels, with a minimum width of 640 pixels. JPG and PNG are among the supported formats. The upload-size limit depends on device: the cited YouTube Help page lists 2 MB for mobile and 50 MB for desktop. Check the live upload interface in case requirements have changed. These are YouTube’s stated recommendations and requirements on its Help page, not a promise that every surface displays the image identically. For a regular horizontal product review, use the standard-video 16:9 guidance; for a Short, follow the separate vertical guidance.

How do I upload a custom thumbnail on YouTube?
- Verify that your YouTube account is eligible to upload custom thumbnails. YouTube says account verification is required.
- Open YouTube Studio and select the video you want to edit.
- Under Thumbnail, choose Upload file, then select your prepared JPG or PNG image.
- Save the change and check the video page and other relevant surfaces to confirm the result looks as intended.
YouTube Studio may offer suggested thumbnail options. Ask Studio can also generate suggestions based on a video’s transcript and themes. These are alternatives to preparing and uploading your own image; review any suggestion for accuracy before using it. How can I test thumbnail alternatives?

Use alternatives that test a real visual choice—for example, a close product view versus a wider shot showing the test setup—while ensuring both versions accurately represent the same video. YouTube recommends reviewing thumbnail performance in Analytics; treat test outcomes and analytics as evidence about that video’s audience, not a universal design rule. How do I keep a product-review thumbnail accurate?
The title and thumbnail should accurately represent the video. Do not show a product feature, test result, or review conclusion that the video does not actually demonstrate. YouTube prohibits misleading thumbnails and requires thumbnails to follow its Community Guidelines. YouTube thumbnail policy

- Do not imply a test result or verdict that the video does not support.
- Check the image against the title so the two make a truthful, consistent promise.
