The best audience engagement tool depends on what you want viewers to do: vote, get their comments on screen, join a faster-moving chat, or see their participation recognized. For gaming streams, start with the interaction you need, then check which platforms and plan support it. StreamYard covers polls and comment overlays; Streamlabs offers alerts and other widgets; Nightbot and StreamElements are options to evaluate for chat tools. None of the feature descriptions establishes that a tool will increase engagement or grow an audience.

For a game stream, a poll can let chat pick a map or challenge; an overlay can make a selected question visible during a break; alerts can acknowledge activity without interrupting play. These are different jobs, so adding every widget is not automatically better. Begin with one interaction that fits your format and your ability to moderate it.
Use polls when you want quick audience input
StreamYard polls let a host create a poll in the studio widgets, show it, pause or resume it, reset it, or end it. Viewers vote by typing the number for their chosen answer in chat, and results update in real time as responses arrive. The polls documentation says they are available on all plans and work on platforms that support chat, but not on record-only broadcasts. StreamYard Polls help
Reusable studios can retain poll templates. Keep choices short and distinct so viewers can quickly identify the number to enter. Polls are most useful when the answer can affect what happens next; they do not replace moderation or guarantee that viewers will participate.

Put selected comments on screen
StreamYard’s Chat Overlay displays incoming comments from supported, connected destinations on the broadcast screen. Hosts can adjust font size and layout dimensions; comments appear chronologically. In reusable studios, the overlay clears between broadcasts. It is a paid-plan feature. Only comments from connected destinations with comment integration appear, and StreamYard’s documentation says Facebook Groups and Instagram are not supported for this overlay. Use an overlay selectively during a Q&A or between matches rather than leaving every message on screen while gameplay is underway. This keeps the game visible and gives the host a chance to screen comments before presenting them. Confirm the destination and plan details before building a show around the feature.

Check platform support before choosing a studio
StreamYard’s destination documentation lists Facebook, LinkedIn, YouTube, X, Twitch, Kick, Vimeo, Instagram, TikTok, and custom RTMP, but destination capabilities differ and some require account permissions or setup. A custom RTMP destination may have limited features. Receiving comments, sending comments, and moderation controls are not universal. The page identifies YouTube timeout and block actions, and Facebook Page comment deletion and user blocking; it reports no such controls there for profiles and other destinations. Before selecting a workflow, check the current compatibility information for every destination you intend to use. Do not assume that a platform listed as a destination supports comment display or moderation in the same way as another.

Use alerts and widgets for recognition, not conversation
Streamlabs describes a range of Desktop widgets with distinct purposes. An Alert Box can show animated clips when viewers donate or engage; an Event List can update for activity such as followers, donations, stars, likes, and merch sales; and Goals give viewers a visible target. A Chat Box reproduces live chat in clips and VODs, while Tip Jars, End Credits, Spin Wheel, and Media Share serve other production purposes. For a gaming broadcast, choose alerts that the audience can understand without obscuring important gameplay. A goal communicates a target; an alert recognizes an event; a chat box preserves conversation in recorded viewing. They are not interchangeable, and more on-screen activity can make a stream harder to follow.

Consider consolidated chat for multistreaming
Streamlabs describes its multistream system as cloud-based: the creator sends a stream to Streamlabs, which handles distribution, with integrated chat across streams. The same page identifies Streamlabs Multistream as an Ultra feature and describes free Dual Output for one vertical and one horizontal destination. Streamlabs also says widgets are built into Streamlabs Desktop, with many available through its OBS plugin or as browser sources. YouTube’s official directory describes Nightbot as a chatbot for automating live-stream chat moderation and features, and StreamElements as a streamer toolset with overlays, a chatbot, tipping, and post-stream reports. The directory explicitly notes that listed products are not made or endorsed by Google. Treat them as options to assess for your own moderation needs, rather than as YouTube recommendations. For any chatbot or moderation setup, check which platform accounts it supports and what actions it can take before enabling automation. A feature list alone does not establish how well a tool handles your community or prevents unwanted messages.
A practical setup sequence for a gaming stream
- Pick one desired action. Decide whether viewers should vote, have selected comments shown, receive a visible acknowledgment, or get a moderated chat experience.
- Verify destination support. Check the tool’s current platform integration, whether it can receive or display comments, and any account permissions or setup required.
- Check the plan boundary. Confirm whether the feature is available on your plan; for example, StreamYard documents polls on all plans but its Chat Overlay on paid plans.
- Test the interaction before the broadcast. Confirm the poll, overlay, alert, or moderation workflow behaves as expected with the destination you will use.
- Keep the screen readable. Position overlays so they do not hide essential game information, and use only the widgets that serve the segment.
- Review the result qualitatively. Note whether viewers understood the prompt and whether the interaction fit the pacing. The available product documentation does not provide measured engagement-lift results.
