Best Screen Recording Software for Linux

OBS Studio is the best all-purpose starting point for Linux screen recording, while simpler desktop tools and Kooha can suit quick clips. Check X11 or Wayland and your compositor before choosing.

OBS Studio is the best starting point for most Linux users who need a capable screen recorder, especially for tutorials, gameplay, presentations, or recordings that combine several sources and audio. If you only need a quick clip, a simpler desktop capture tool or Kooha may be a better fit. On Linux, the right choice depends in part on whether you use X11 or Wayland—and, with Wayland, which desktop or compositor you run.

Which Linux screen recorder should you choose?

Tool or category Good fit for What to check
OBS Studio Tutorials, gameplay, presentations, and recordings with multiple inputs, composed scenes, audio adjustments, or a possible move to live streaming. Whether your desktop session and desired capture source work on your system; OBS cautions that meeting its requirements alone does not guarantee successful capture.
Kooha or a desktop-native recorder Quick, straightforward screen captures where minimal setup matters more than extensive production controls. Whether it supports your session and the exact full-screen, window, or region workflow you need.
wf-recorder or wl-screenrec Readers investigating more specialized Wayland-related workflows. Current project documentation and compatibility with your particular compositor and capture needs.
SimpleScreenRecorder A candidate to compare when considering traditional desktop recording tools. Verify current compatibility against project documentation; the available comparison coverage does not establish a current Wayland compatibility matrix.

This is a feature-based recommendation, not a benchmark or hands-on test ranking. The OBS Project describes OBS as “Free and open source software for video recording and live streaming” and lists Linux among its supported platforms (OBS Studio).

Why OBS Studio is the strongest all-purpose starting point

OBS is suited to recordings that need more than a bare screen capture. It supports configurable scenes, multiple capture sources, and an audio mixer, so you can compose a tutorial or gameplay recording from the inputs you need and manage their audio. It also includes live-streaming capabilities, though you can use it solely to record.

That flexibility has a trade-off: OBS exposes more production controls than a one-off clip usually requires. If you only need to capture something quickly, try your desktop’s built-in recorder or a simpler candidate first. If you want control over multiple sources, scenes, or audio, OBS is the more capable place to begin.

Check Linux capture compatibility before committing

Identify your session: X11 or Wayland

OBS’s Linux system requirements list both the X Window System and Wayland. The OBS Project also warns that satisfying its stated requirements does not guarantee that a particular system can record or stream successfully (OBS system requirements).

Wayland is not one uniform capture environment. Desktop and compositor differences can affect which capture methods work. Before settling on an app, check your actual desktop/compositor and the precise kind of capture you need. A recent secondary comparison discusses these differences, but should not be treated as a guarantee of support on every system (iTechGuides’ Wayland recorder comparison).

Match the tool to the capture and audio workflow

  • Capture area: Decide whether you need a full display, a single window, or a selectable region. Confirm that the app offers the required mode in your session.
  • Audio: Decide whether the recording needs system audio, a microphone, both, or neither. A microphone is optional for narrated demonstrations, not a prerequisite for recording a screen.
  • Other sources: If you want a webcam or capture-device input alongside the screen, prefer a recorder whose source and scene controls suit that setup. OBS documents multiple input sources and audio mixing.
  • Installation: Follow the instructions for your distribution rather than assuming one package route applies everywhere. OBS provides official Linux installation guidance.

Set up OBS for your first recording

  1. Install OBS using the guidance for your distribution. Start with the OBS Project’s Linux installation page; package options can differ between distributions.
  2. Test the exact capture source you need. In OBS, add the screen or other capture source available in your session, then confirm that the preview shows the intended display, window, or content. If capture is unavailable or blank, check the active session and desktop/compositor before changing unrelated settings.
  3. Choose whether narration or other audio is needed. Add and check the relevant audio inputs in OBS’s mixer. Make a short test recording and play it back to confirm that the intended audio is present and intelligible. A USB microphone for screen recording is an optional accessory for voice-led tutorials, not a requirement for silent captures.
  4. Compose only the sources you need. Use scenes and additional sources when the recording calls for a webcam, another input, or a deliberate layout. For a basic screen clip, keep the setup simple.
  5. Record a short sample and inspect the output. Verify that the picture, audio, and chosen capture area are correct before recording a long session. System capability and capture behavior vary; OBS does not promise that meeting its listed requirements ensures success on every machine.

Common problems and what to check

  • The screen source is blank or unavailable: Confirm whether you are in an X11 or Wayland session, then check the capture method supported by your desktop/compositor. Try the exact intended capture mode rather than assuming that a different recorder will behave the same way.
  • The wrong display or window appears: Recheck the selected source and target in the app preview, especially if you have multiple displays or windows. Make a short sample after changing the selection.
  • The video records but narration is missing: Check that the intended microphone input is selected and active in the audio mixer, then record and play back a brief test.
  • You cannot install the expected package: Return to the recorder’s official installation guidance and use the instructions appropriate to your distribution. Do not assume a package command or repository applies across Linux distributions.
  • A tool works in one desktop but not another: Treat that as a session/compositor compatibility issue to verify, not proof of universal support or failure. Compare the exact desktop, capture source, and capture mode against current project documentation.

Where StreamNeo fits—and where it does not

StreamNeo is not Linux screen-recording software: it does not capture a live desktop or camera. It is a separate cloud service for keeping a YouTube channel live by looping videos you upload. If your goal is a continuous YouTube stream from prerecorded content rather than recording your Linux screen, learn more at StreamNeo. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; the cloud handles the loop, so your computer does not have to stay on. StreamNeo is for YouTube only.

To try that separate workflow, visit StreamNeo’s registration page.
