A webcam or phone can be enough for a simple broadcast; for gameplay, screen capture, overlays, or multiple audio and video sources, use encoder software such as one of the options in YouTube’s verified encoder list. The right choice depends on what you want viewers to see and how much control you need.
Choose a streaming method for your broadcast
| Method | Best for | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Webcam | A straightforward broadcast from a computer | YouTube’s webcam route requires a computer with a webcam. It avoids a separate encoder workflow. |
| Mobile | Vlogging and quick updates from a phone or tablet | Mobile streaming has additional eligibility requirements; check YouTube’s current requirements before relying on it. |
| Encoder software | Gameplay, screen sharing, overlays, external cameras or audio gear, and more involved productions | An encoder sends a composed video feed to YouTube. YouTube lists third-party encoders; listing or verification does not mean YouTube makes or endorses them. |
| Console | Streaming gameplay directly from a supported game console | Current game consoles can stream directly. Follow the console maker’s instructions for setup. |
For gaming, encoder software is often the most flexible route: it can combine gameplay with a microphone, camera, graphics, or other sources. If you only need a simple camera broadcast, start with YouTube’s webcam or mobile method instead of installing software you may not need. YouTube describes encoder streams as common for gaming, sporting events, concerts, and conferences.
What to look for in encoder software
YouTube’s verified-encoder list includes options such as OBS, Streamlabs, and Wirecast Go, among others. The list is a useful starting point, not a complete buying comparison. Confirm current availability, operating-system support, features, and pricing with the software maker; those details can change.
- Sources and scenes: Check that it can capture the game or screen you want and arrange the camera, gameplay, and other inputs.
- Audio and video controls: Make sure you can select the right microphone and camera and adjust the output settings needed for your stream.
- Overlays and alerts: If your show needs graphics or alerts, confirm the encoder supports the elements and workflow you plan to use.
- Hardware compatibility: Check support for any external cameras, microphones, capture devices, or mixers you intend to connect.
- Output needs and cost: If you need multiple outputs or a particular production workflow, verify that directly with the vendor, along with any price or plan requirements.
You do not need to buy equipment to get started. A USB microphone, webcam, or headphones can be useful additions, but they are optional; YouTube’s guidance for beginners is to start with what you have.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Set up an encoder stream
- Check channel eligibility. YouTube says your channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. Streamers must be at least 16. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable live streaming before the day of an event. See YouTube’s encoder setup guide for current requirements.
- Create or schedule a stream. In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or select a stream. Copy the server URL and stream key shown there.
- Connect the encoder. If YouTube is offered as a service in the encoder, select it and follow its connection flow. Otherwise, paste YouTube’s server URL into the encoder’s server field and the stream key into its key field. Keep the key private; if it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room.
- Add and check your sources. Add the game or screen capture and any camera, microphone, or other inputs you need. Check that the encoder is using the intended microphone and camera, and listen for unwanted or missing audio.
- Start the encoder and check the preview. Wait for the incoming video to appear in YouTube’s Live Control Room and review the preview and stream-health messages before selecting Go live.
- End the broadcast cleanly. End the stream in YouTube and stop the encoder from sending. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived.
Use settings that match your connection and hardware
Choose a resolution and frame rate your computer and upload connection can sustain. The values below are YouTube’s recommended H.264 bitrates, not guaranteed minimum internet speeds. Leave connection headroom and account for local network instability; a bitrate your connection cannot maintain can lead to stream-health problems.
| Output | YouTube-recommended H.264 bitrate |
|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 4 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 10 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 12 Mbps |
These figures apply to H.264 examples in YouTube’s live encoder settings guidance. Its recommendations differ for AV1 and H.265 (HEVC), so use the table for the codec you actually select rather than treating one bitrate as universal.

- Keyframes: Set a two-second keyframe interval; do not exceed four seconds.
- Video and audio formats: YouTube’s general guidance lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1 for video and AAC or MP3 for audio. Check the current settings page for codec-specific limits and support.
- Frame rate: YouTube’s general guidance supports up to 60 fps. A higher frame rate can demand more from both the encoder and the connection.
HDR has separate requirements and is not a beginner default. Check YouTube’s current settings guidance before configuring an HDR stream.
Test before you schedule a live event
A test should use the same game or screen activity, camera, microphone, and approximate motion as the real broadcast. This can reveal audio routing problems or unstable video that a static desktop would not expose. Review the preview, stream health, and any YouTube messages before the event.

These are YouTube’s service recommendations, not guarantees that a particular computer or internet connection will handle a chosen output.
Common setup problems and fixes
- No stream appears in Live Control Room: Check that the encoder is running, the server URL is correct, and the stream key matches the selected stream. If the key may have been exposed, reset it and update the encoder.
- The preview appears, but the broadcast is not live: Wait for the preview and stream-health check, then select Go live in Live Control Room. Starting the encoder sends a feed; it does not replace that final YouTube action in this workflow.
- Microphone or game audio is missing: Check the selected input in the encoder, the source’s mute state, and any connected hardware routing. Make a test recording or private test before the event.
- Video stutters or stream health warns: Confirm the selected bitrate is sustainable on the upload connection. Lowering resolution, frame rate, or bitrate can reduce load; test the adjusted settings with representative gameplay motion.
- You cannot start a live stream: Verify channel eligibility and whether first-time activation is still pending. YouTube says activation can take up to 24 hours.
Copyright and channel rules still apply
Streaming software does not grant rights to the music, video, or other material you broadcast. Use content you created, have permission to use, or are otherwise entitled to stream. Review YouTube’s current live-streaming requirements and applicable copyright rules before broadcasting, especially if your gameplay stream includes commercial music or third-party footage. A successful encoder connection is not a guarantee that the content complies with YouTube’s policies.
