Set them in Settings > Hotkeys: assign separate keys or combinations to Start Recording and Stop Recording, then test both before a real session. OBS does not prescribe one universal recording-key combination.
How to set OBS recording hotkeys
- Open OBS Studio and select Settings > Hotkeys.
- Find the recording actions. Assign a key or key combination to Start Recording and a different one to Stop Recording. The exact labels and available actions can vary by installed build, so use the controls shown in your Hotkeys screen.
- If you need to pause and resume a recording, assign those actions too if they appear in your build. They are optional; start and stop are the core bindings.
- Select Apply or OK to save the changes, then return to your scene.
- Make a short test recording. Press the start binding, capture a few seconds, press stop, and check that the file plays and its audio is present. Confirm the stop binding before relying on it during a game or longer capture.
OBS supports keyboard keys for hotkeys. Pick bindings that are comfortable, distinct from each other, and unlikely to conflict with the game or application in focus. These are practical selection criteria, not an official OBS standard; no particular F-key or modifier combination is universally best.
Which hotkeys are useful for a recording setup?
Start and stop recording
These are the essential controls for a manually operated capture. Keep the stop binding easy to reach so you can end a recording without searching through OBS windows.
Pause and resume
Add pause and resume bindings if you want one file with gaps omitted, and if those actions are available in your installed version. Test the resulting file to make sure the pause behavior fits your editing workflow.

Scene and source controls
OBS lists scene changes and showing or hiding sources among the actions that can be assigned hotkeys. They can be useful when a recording changes between gameplay, a webcam, or an overlay, but they are not required for basic screen recording. Check your own Hotkeys page for the controls exposed by your build.
Push-to-talk and mute
Hotkeys can also control push-to-talk or mute actions. Consider whether the chosen key could be pressed accidentally while playing or using the captured software, and make a test to verify which audio source the action controls.

Recording hotkeys are not the same as OBS default shortcuts
OBS’s published Keyboard Shortcuts page documents general commands and shortcuts for the Sources list and Preview, with separate Windows/Linux and macOS columns. For example, the listed Windows/Linux Preview transform shortcuts include Ctrl+F to fit a source to the screen, Ctrl+S to stretch it to the screen, and Ctrl+D to center it; the macOS column uses the corresponding Command-key combinations. Those are editing shortcuts, not universal start- or stop-recording keys.
Recording controls are assigned in the Hotkeys settings. Don’t assume a shortcut listed for editing sources will start a capture; inspect your installed build’s Hotkeys page instead. OBS’s Overview Guide describes the configurable hotkey categories and points to those settings. The guide and shortcut page were published in 2021, so the labels and available actions in a current installation may differ.

Replay Buffer: save a recent moment, not a full session
Replay Buffer is a separate workflow from continuous recording. It keeps a buffer so you can save recent footage, rather than requiring you to record an entire session and keep all of it. In OBS, enable Replay Buffer and assign its Start Replay Buffer, Stop Replay Buffer, and Save Replay hotkeys as needed. OBS’s Overview Guide notes that the buffer must be enabled and a save hotkey assigned to save a replay.
Use the recording start/stop bindings when you want a full capture. Use Replay Buffer when you want to preserve a recent segment from an already-running buffer. Confirm the buffer is running before depending on its save hotkey.

Start recording automatically when OBS opens
If the goal is to begin recording as OBS launches, OBS documents launch parameters for that purpose: --startrecording starts recording at launch, while --startreplaybuffer starts Replay Buffer. These are startup options, not keyboard bindings to press after OBS is open. Follow the launch method for your operating system and verify the behavior with a short test before using it for an important capture; OBS lists the parameters on its Launch Parameters page.
| Approach | When it triggers | Best suited to |
|---|---|---|
| Hotkey in OBS | When you press the assigned binding while OBS is running | Manual control over when a recording starts or stops |
--startrecording |
When OBS launches with the parameter | Starting a recording as part of an OBS startup routine |
| Replay Buffer hotkeys | After the buffer is enabled and running; save action preserves a recent segment | Saving selected recent footage instead of keeping a full-session recording |
Troubleshooting OBS recording hotkeys
- Pressing the key does nothing: Reopen Settings > Hotkeys and confirm a binding is assigned to the correct action. Retest in OBS; if a game or other application is involved, check whether its own shortcut conflicts with the binding.
- The wrong action runs: Review the assigned key or combination for both recording actions and any scene, source, or audio controls. Choose a distinct binding and test again.
- You can start but not stop: Check that Stop Recording has its own binding, save the settings, and try a short test capture. Don’t assume the start key also stops recording.
- Replay Buffer won’t save a clip: Make sure Replay Buffer is enabled and running, and that Save Replay has a hotkey assigned. A recording start/stop binding does not substitute for the replay save action.
- A launch parameter does not start recording: Confirm OBS was launched with the documented parameter in the launch method you use. The parameter is a startup option, not an in-app hotkey.
- A shortcut shown online is missing or behaves differently: Check the Hotkeys page in your installed OBS build. Published shortcut documentation is not proof that every release exposes identical actions or defaults.
Or let it run in the cloud
OBS hotkeys are for controlling a local recording. If instead you want uploaded videos to keep a YouTube channel live 24/7, StreamNeo runs the loop in the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; videos stream as uploaded at any quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly is $9.99 per month. Learn more at StreamNeo, or start your free day.
